The more I research the more I am realizing how much an education in Mexican history is necessary, and will help me with my various searches.

Does anyone have a recommendation for comprehensive Mexican History "must read"?

Monica,

Here's a link to Libros Latinos, go on-line, peruse their books and have fun reading and learning. They have many different categories, among them are various sections for Mexico.

Hello Monica,

The city is named Lagos de Moreno. Prior to 9 April 1829 it was named Santa
María de Lagos. It changed it's named to Lagos de Moreno to honor a hero of
the independence the insurgent Pedro Moreno de Ortega González de Hermosillo
baptized 27 January 1775 in Lagos de Moreno.

I get that the child's name (al margen) is Jose Deonicio de Jesus, that he
is also a natural child of Maria Eusebia Ramires and that the padrinos are
Pio Rodriguez y Maria Micaela Ramires. I think the padrinos may be the
child's grandparents. I'm not good with abbreviations. Hope this helps.

Response from Family Search

Below is the response I got from Feedback at Family Search when I submitted the problem of finding the marriage of Jn.

I just got this response below from Family Search Feedback. As usual, I don't know what they are talking about.

I no longer have trouble moving from image to image.

I did complain about the little box on the bottom right (I guess that is what they mean by the image map) no longer being available. Because of my arthritis, I find it very difficult to move my mouse around the whole screen instead of just around the little window.

I don't know what they mean about edge to edge viewing of images, or HTML being browser resident---terms too technical for me.

I am glad that on October 1 I will be able to print only the part of the image I want instead of having to save both pages on the image, then cropping it using other software. Too much rigamaroll.

Estimado Celestino,

You can get film numbers for the batch numbers from the FHL Parish and Vital Records index (this is a microfiche; there is no computer index). This can be somewhat hard to find; the LDS family history centers should have it, but may not. This is actually an old source, so some of the volunteers may not be aware of it.

The basic information you need is country, state/province, and town (ocassionally specific church in the town if it is a large town/city).

You can get them from the Films area of NR at http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/films for some localities.

You can also do a google search for IGI batch numbers, a number of sites will come up. One of best one for Mexican Records is http://mexicoigibatchnumbers.wetpaint.com/

You can get them from the Films area of NR at http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/films for some localities.

However, the secondary lists of batch numbers are not necessarily complete.

Hello,

The corresponding film number to the C60412-7 batch number is 0221409 which covers the years 1738-1745 for Lagos.

Also, if anyone wants copies of the Parish and Vital Records Index, I can send them a .pdf file of for the Mexican state that you need. Contact me directly by private email. Many years ago, I scanned the whole Parish and Vital Record list, for Mexico, Central and South America.

Another suggestion: save the image, then try adjusting the contrast and/or the brightness with picture viewing software.

Some software will have an "auto-fix" feature which tries to optimize the image. This may be the best place to start.

I just finished watching an interview by Connie Martinson of Victor Villasenor (she kept calling him Victor Villasena and he never corrected her) on his website victorvillasenor.com and I wonder if those who saw him speak recently can say if what he said in this video is what they heard.

The interview is in two parts, each 14 minutes each, and I got quite an insight into Victor's views, like Carlos Castaneda, very spiritual, focusing on the spirituality of his indigenous side, his connection to the spirit world, etc. He had trouble with his publishers insisting his were works of fiction because of this; his tales sometimes sound too fantastic.

I wonder what others who have heard him speak came away with.

Mr. Villasenor opened his lecture by welcoming the standing only crowd to come forward and sit on the floor in the front and sides of the room in order to better enjoy the presentation. The perfect host, he engaged attendees with questions on attitudes about world peace. Some were optimistic, but many like me, were unsure.

Ten years ago, as a novice genealogist, some wise person suggested I read his books to understand family history, which is the context of genealogy. I have only read two of his books, “Rain of Gold”, and Thirteen Senses”, which chronicles his family’s journey from Mexico to Orange County California in the early 1900’s, and was not only inspired but motivated to look for “the story” and not just names and dates.

Victor Villasenor is not only a best selling author, but he is an amazing storyteller and motivational speaker. Relating his family history using quotes and pictures from several of his books he set the context of his family’s migration from Mexico to

Renee,

Thank you for your comments. I just sent a post to Research at NR wondering what someone who has attended his lectures came away with.

His website victorvillasenor.com has a two-part interview (14 minutes each) done by Connie Martinson (who kept calling him Victor Villasena and he never corrected her). I got quite an insight into Victor's ideology, his spirituality, the tales he says are true, but publishers considered fiction since most Americans don't understand the spirituality of Native peoples (he dotes on his indigenous side).

He says that the world is entering another feminine cycle of peace and love, and that women are the center of it; however, in one of the other videos he speaks of how he and his wife had to separate (I assume they are divorced), that she thought he was insane, but that he just had to go his own way. Kind of contradictory on his part. Still, he zeroes in on what it is like to be poor in Mexico and a minority in the US, and I haven't found

I believe that it means from Spain, a general term rather than specifying a specific region but I could be wrong. I have seen this before and I assumed that it meant from Spain.
