SALVADOR CABRAL VALDES
Salvador,

Alice,
I have seen not only priests, but others higher up in their hierarchy named as godfathers. Usually it is a family member or good friend of the family, and of course they were upper class (all those Dons and Donas). I think the godfather would be expected to be the spiritual guide for the child, and in his position he would be able to arrange for shelter, schooling, etc. and not really be expected to raise the child himself.

Raquel, that's exactly how I reacted; but like I said, I've only been doing this for a couple of years (when my job allows it). During these years, I've read all posting, but had never come across or heard from others that they had encountered this in their families. I can only guess he was family or a good friend of the family. Thanks so much for your response.

In going through the Informacion Matrimonial for Aguascalientes, 1711, I found another child for Thomas de Villalpando and Maria de Vargas.
Hi George, I am wondering which info matri. films have you seen? Im looking for Jose Ruiz de Esparza and a Eugenio de Lozano. But no luck so far. -Daniel
_________________________________________________________________
Daniel
I have gone through the Informacion Matrimonial for Aguascalientes from the beginning (1666) to 1699 completely, and am working on the early 1700s. A number of 1700s films are currently off-line, so my data is not yeyt complete. I've posted the first part (through 1699) under Aguascalientes Marriages in the Files area.
I don't know what time period you are interested in, but this is what I have:
Vol 1696/97, image 100
Eugenio Losano, son of Joseph Losano and Petrona Gonzales, and Maria Duron, daughter of Andres Duron and Juana Basques.
There is no Jose Ruis de Esparza, but several Josephs:
vol 1703, image 123, Padres no conosodios (this is for Joseph de Esparza)
vol 1698/1701, image 115, son of Martin Ruis de Esparza and Francisca Zotelo de Jaen
vol 1698/1701, iamge 343, son of Alonso Ruis Mateo and Matiana Ruis de Esparza
vol 1701, image 1, son of Alonso Ruis Mateo and Matiana Ruis de Esparza (this is a continuation of the previous record).
Hopefully, this is helpful
Hi George,
many thanks yup thats my Eugenio and Maria Duron or Duran. I see both in all sorts of records. The Joseph Ruiz de Esparza im looking for is ca. 1730 he actually married the daughter of Eugenio Lozano. The Duran/Vasquez line goes into Nochistlan, so Im stuck there.
This is the new info I have maybe you have these in your database.
Eugenio Lozano was son of Jose Lozano and Petronila Gonzalez aka Petrona de Macias y Valades, aka Petronila de Retamosa. I found there marriage in Teocaltiche 23 feb 1666. On the other side Maria Duron (Duran) daughter of Jose Andres Duran and Juana Asencion Vasquez y Sandoval. Andres is son of Juan Simon Duran and Regina de Aguayo.

You are most welcome!
I have not reached the 1730s yet, as I am still working on 1712. Most of the later films are still off-line. My goal is to work on these until I get to the point where the marriages records and the matrimonial information are in agreement, that is, when they generally both exist, and the information in them is the same. I also intend to post these, also, when complete.

Hi George, actually I do have another Jose Esparza. I have 3 of them!
Maybe you have these guys, the only ones I cant find
Jose de Esparza
Maria Dolores del Rio
married prob married ca. 1700
Jose Diaz de Anda aka Diaz Tiscareno
Jacinta de Ortega y Estrada
married 12 feb 1679, the actual marriage does not list parents maybe in info. matr.
Thanks, again George, your work is gonna help many Aguascalientes researchers.

Unfortunately, I do not find anything on these folks ... in 1679, for example, there are only 2 matrimonial information files.

Oh I gorgot on Jose Esparza and Dolores Rio, I never found any kids, so they might have married bet 1700-1715 since their daughters marriage record list her to have been born ca. 1715.

Hi, Carlos,
I have contacted Jaime's son in Mexico City, and so has Arturo, our webmaster. The son also is supposedly a member of this group. The son told me he is going to publish his father's last project that he was working on when he died, but that he and his siblings are not interested in genealogy to the extent that their father was, and they are tied down earning a living. What was sad to hear was that his father's papers are all molding and bug-ridden in a storage room in his wife's house somewhere. I will try and find that e-mail address I had for the son, I think his name is Jaime also, and send it to you later.
Thanks much,
Emilie

Phelipe Ortiz was son of Pedro Ortiz and Catalina Ramirez. He married Josepha de Avila, daughter of Luis de Avila and Clara de Amaia (also as Anaya) on 26 April 1643 in Aguascalientes.
Jaime
Luis de Avila and Clara de Amaia had three children that I have been able to document so far (which I would expect you also know):
Josepha, who you mentioned, who married 26 Apr 1643, Phelipe Ortiz (Aguascalientes film 299421, image 272)
Maria, who married 11 Mar 1646 (velados 10 Aug 1646), Pablo de Montes de Oca Sanches (same film, images 283 and 284)
Nicolas, who married 6 Feb 1647, Getrudis de Luebana (same film, image 286).
All three of these records name all the parents.
I have not researched further on descendants Josepha de Avila and Phelipe Ortiz.
I have seen some posted genealogies that place Luis de Avila (who married Cathalina de Grijalva) in this family also, but I do not have documentation of this.
In my review of the Informacion Matrimonial, there is an entry for Juan Ramires, son of Phelipe Ortis and Josepha de Avila, and Maria Garcia (also names first wife, Luisa Ruis de Esparza). See the volume for 1678/81, image 137 (16 Feb 1676. I did not find amarriage

The film numbers are the microfilm numbers of the parrish register books from which the information comes. You can order these films for viewing at your local family history center... go to http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHL/frameset_library.asp to find your closest family history center.
The batch numbers are viewable online though the same site (familysearch.org). You can simply go to Advanced Search, select IGI (usually) or VRI (sometimes), type in the batch number and select "Mexico" from the location options and it will give you the extractions of the relevant film associated with the batch number.
You can also use the "Films" section of the

SALVADOR CABRAL VALDES
Hey all, for Chihuahua, apprently was missing some records and have been added to the pilot website.
Estimados Colisteros,
On this day in 1587, Virginia Day became the first child of English parents to be born on American soil in what is now Roanoke Island in the State of North Carolina.
One step closer to the answer to this question... there is documentation showing that Spanish women crossed the Atlantic to Hispaniola (Santo Domingo) as early as 1497, perhaps as early as 1494:
El propio Cristóbal Colón, en la Carta de Relación del segundo viaje, dice que entregó un niño indígena «a una muger que de Castilla acá benía» (Antonio Rumeu de Armas, Manuscrito del Libro Copiador de Colón, Madrid, ed. del autor, 1989, p. 450.)
By 1497 there were a large number of spanish women in Hispaniola:
En un documento fechado 1497 Ávila aparecen trescientos de los más de seiscientos pasajeros que participaron en el segundo viaje colombino y, entre ellos, figuran mujeres como María de Granada y las comerciantes Catalina Vázquez y Catalina Rodríguez. Los Reyes Católicos autorizaron al almirante a llevar trescientos hombres y treinta mujeres en su siguiente travesía (1497-98). Entre esas treinat
Great research, Arturo! Men being men, I was sure women were brought early on, and colorful ones at that! Thanks for the enlightenment; historical facts are usually more interesting than believing a sugar-coated fairytale. Alice B Blake

En un
Geronimo de Aguilar was a Franciscan friar, and while shipwrecked and captured by the Maya in the Yucatan in 1511, he did not father any children (at least not any that he would admit to since that would prove that he had broken his vows of chastity).
He was shipwrecked with Gonzalo Guerrero, who bacame a war leader for Nachan Kaan, married a rich Maya woman and fathered Mexico's first three mestizo children sometime in the 1510s.
When Cortes sent a message to ask Aguilar and Guerrero to join him in his conquest of Mexico in 1519, Aguilar went, but Guerrero told Aguilar:
"Hermano Aguilar, yo soy casado y tengo tres hijos. Tienenme por cacique y capitán, cuando hay guerras, la cara tengo labrada, y horadadas las orejas. ¿Que dirán de mi esos españoles, si me ven ir de este modo? Idos vos con la bendición de Dios, que ya veis que estos mis hijitos son bonitos, y dadme por vida vuestra de esas cuentas verdes que traeis, para darles, y diré, que mis hermanos me las envían de mi tierra."
If my history is correct and I think 99.9 will be, but without checking my sources I have to say that there was contact with the Mayas from three sailors that were marooned of the coast of Yucatan, they procreated children becoming the first mestizos in the Americas.
(Just as soon as I can I will do some research and let every one know the names of those soldiers.) It might have been Jeronimo de Aguilar.

Estimados Colisteros,
On this day in 1587, Virginia Day became the first child of English parents to be born on American soil in what is now Roanoke Island in the State of North Carolina.
Is it known when the first descendant of Spanish parents was born in what is now Mexico? ... and who that child was?

Wow, I did not known this, I guess Mestizos were born before the criollos, the first European born in the Americas is Luis Cortes Hermosillo. -Daniel

The first child of Spanish parents born in the Americas was likely in Hispaniola (Dominican Republic), where the Spanish had permanent colonies since 1496. I am not very familiar with the microhistory of Santo Domingo from that era to figure out who exactly it might have been but I would be willing to bet a criollo was born there before a child of Hernan Cortes was born in the 1520s.
I don't think there were any Spanish women on the first voyages, but probably there were women on the voyages to Santo Domingo before 1500.

True, after Mexico fell, most conquistadores had wives and travled back to Spain for them and their kids. Luis was the first Spanish Mexican Criollo, not sure who was in Hispaniola

The first Spaniard to be born in America "In the sense of all America not USA" was don Luís Cortés y Hermosillo, child of Hernán Cortés and doña Elvira de Hermosillo, relative of the Hermosillos of Los altos. Not sure how though? I was always told this, I guess we have another task on the plate.

According to Bernal Díaz del Castillo, the first mestizos born in

OK, I've almost given up on this GEDCOM "thingee". Although I can read them (as a guest); how can I be a contributor on it. PLEASE don't tell me I have to buy different software.
Joseph:
To add information to the GEDCOM database all you need to do is request that a tree be set up for you on the database. Then you should be able to either upload a GEDCOM file that you have created in some other software (you can use the free PAF software) or simply use the database as your genealogy repository and manually enter data directly into the database on the website. This is explained in an email that all members get when they first use the GEDCOM database.
As for viewing other members Word file attachments, Microsoft gas a free Word viewer you can download that allows you to view but nit create or edit Word files.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657ce88-7cfa-…
The Open Office software that was mentioned is another option. It is free as long as you download it as opposed to order a disk.

Thanks Arturo! I did that and my GEDCOM Thingee is up and running!
I do not know how to contribute to the GEDCOM section, so that's a question for someone else.
However, I do know that files that are in Microsoft Word format can be opened by Open Office, which can be downloaded free at OpenOffice.org

Es una pregunta o afirmación?
Are you asking a question or are you making a statement? I am interested in

I did not know that they had already loaded digital images onto the AGN website. When I was there a couple of years back I was told that they were in the midst of a digitiaztion project but you know how those things go, particularly in Mexico, but I agree with Salvador that the tool works very well...
Just pilfering through there I found a "limpieza de sangre" of this couple which I believe are the ancestors of many Ranchos members. Unfortunately it is not one of the documents for which the digital image has been loaded on the site.
