Efrain,

I'm interested in what you have on Francisco Gutierrez Rubio (1550 - ?), son
of Diego Gonzales de Hermosillo and Ana Gonzales Florida ....

I had thought that Francisco Gutierrez Rubio was married to Ana Gonzales
Florida - and that he was the son of Diego Gonzales de Hermosillo and Maria
Rubio ..... This was based solely on family search batch #F868025 Sheet:
047

I haven't had a chance to verify this information and so I'm curious as to
what you have and what the source is.

I have the same data as Angelina based on the same batch number #F868025
and the book Diccionario Biografico del Occidente Novohispano Siglo XVI by
Thomas Hillerkuss. I believe the batch is the work of the late Mr.
Holcombe. I have also not verified with any original source documents, but
took a chance based on the reliability of the two sources while waiting to
verify. I descend from this couple numerous times, as Francisco Gutierrez
Rubio and Ana Gonzales Florida are my 11th, 12th and 13th great-grandparents
depending on which line I follow. Based on their approximate date of
marriage of 1576 I don't think they could be 5th great-grandparents to
Efrain. We (Angelina and I) are probably looking at different generations.
Francisco Gutierrez Rubio and Ana Gonzales Florida were names that were
passed down several generations.

Angelina,

You are correct, and I do have in my records (even though I erroneously
transposed mother/wife information in my previous e-mail) that Film No.
1396255 (Batch F868025) indicates that the Parents of Francisco Gutierrez
Rubio (1551 - ?) were Diego Gonzalez se Hermosillo and Maria Rubio ... and
that he married Ana Gonzalez Florida (1555 - ?) about 1576 in the Parroquia
Santa Maria de Los Lagos in Lagos de Moreno.

For additional information to any who may be interested, the Film also
indicates that Francisco and Ana had 6 children born in Jalostitlan:

Maria Gonzalez, ca. 1577
Miguel Gonzalez Rubio, ca. 1584
Ana Gonzalez Florida, ca. 1594
Francisco Gutierrez Rubio, ca. 1595
Diego Gonzalez Rubio, ca. 1597
Catalina Gonzalez Rubio, ca. 1597

Thank you for catching this error before it might have spread out and
confused others.

Maria,

I just sent an e-mail to Angelina correcting my erroneous mother/wife
transposition about Francisco Gonzalez Rubio (1551 - ?), --- and confirming
that the three of us are in agreement with our data and sources.

Francisco and Ana were not my 5G-grandparents, they were 5th-grandparents
(also 6th and 7th) to my 6th-grandmother Maria Juana Ynez Maldonado
Lozano(1727 - 1744) that was the wife of Francisco Conrique (ca. 1720 - ?).

Thank you,

Efrain

Hi Efrain et all who are doing the Gutiérrez Rubio clan. I have some different info, I did see the batch on familysearch you guys are talking about. The parents I had for don Francisco were Diego González de la Vega y María Rubio. I have a daughter for Francisco who appears I guess sometimes (her name is Leonor) as Leonor Gutiérrez de la Vega or simply as Leonor Rubio. My source is familysearch and another group called Genealogía de Méjico. Sorry I dont have concrete sources because this is info "back in the day" when I was beginning, i still am very lazy to add sources which it haunts me now because sometimes I dont remember where I got this or that, my next task will be sourcing everything on my PAF, it needs to be done. Thought I share this inconsistancy, please reply, I want to know why my info is different. I think Efrain stated Francisco was son of Diego G. de Hermosillo? how does Gutiérrez and Vega come in? -Daniel

Hello everyone,

I completely agree with Corrine. Our research is never completely done and if we wait to verify every single lead before we post our information on this site then where would we be? I personally prefer to see this work in progress which could perhaps connect me to someone that is persuing the same line, than wait indefintely for a more complete works. Yes, there will be errors, but it is also an opportunity to fix those errors and refine our work.

Hi Corrine,

I have a long line of Gonzalez's directly from my grandmother. They lived in Yahualica, Jalisco; registered there and before then--in Cuqio, Jalisco. The latest generation lived near Juchipila, Zacatecas before migrating to the US:

1870-1890
Gonzalez-Vasquez

Jose vs Joseph

A few weeks ago there was considerable discussion about why the name Jose was written Joseph, and vice versa.

In the records I am presently studying - Matrimonios of San José de
Gracia 1769-1783 - even the Parish name is written "Yglesia Parrochial
de el Pueblo de el Señor San Joseph de Gracia". Notice also the
spelling of Parroquial as Parrochial and the avoidance of the
contraction del. On some occasions Joseph is written in a slightly
truncated form, so that it looks like Joset or Josep. Josepha and
Phelipe also appear frequently.

George:

What year are the records you are talking about where people were signing Joseph while the priests were writing Jose?

Perhaps this was a sign of the priests being more "with the times" in adopting the orthographic reforms of the 1800s while the common people stuck to tradition. I imagine many people who were illiterate were taught to write their names in abbreviation for simplicity and the abbreviations went unchanged even when the full name spelling had undergone reform.

I found the following in a language forum (http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=522006). I took the liberty of editing the contributions by 'Forero" and "Ube"

José comes from the hebrew יוֹסֵף, pronounced "Yosef". In the New Testament it was used as Ιωσηφ, not Ιωσηφος which is the Greek version of the name. In Saint Jerome's revision of the Bible (5th century), latter known as " versio Vulgata " (13th century) and also in old Spanish, the use of the name was Joseph , whereas in formal Latin is Josephus o Josefus .

This is such a common problem with internet genealogy. It seems that many people do not understand citing sources, and do not know what are valid references. I have occassionally tried to contact some people that have posted genealogies, and I have gotten very mixed responses. These have varied from none, to rather indignant replies, like "I know it's correct because my grandmother told me."

Family tradition is fine; sometimes it has basis in fact, sometimes not. If something is an unverified tradition, then so state! Perhaps someone will have the data that substantiates it.

Some data is open to interpretation: look at it critically. If the data is only suggestive of a connection, then state it.

I try to verify information against real sources whenever possible.

The Petronila de Moctezuma/Martin Navarro situation is a case in point. You see a lot of posted genealogies with them, but the evidence is lacking. I have looked at several histories, including "Montezuma's Children" by

In my opinion you should document where you got everything.
That way, you will always be able to re-evaluate your information by
looking at where you got it. I got a lot of information, for example,
from two family researchers. As time went on, I discovered that one of
these sources was very dependable and the other was full of errors.
Since I have documented where every piece of data came from, I can now
evaluate it intelligently. When I find new evidence, I know which I
can trust the most.

I have always been very wary of undocumented sources. I use them with
great care. Sometimes I have even been known to just throw them away,
because I would rather have less information that I am more sure of -
quality rather than quantity.

Everybody's database contains some junk. The problem is, what if you
can no longer remember which is junk and which is solid research? The
only way you can know is to document. It is one of the reasons I am

I have had the same experiences that you wrote about.
When I first started out I did not document everything, or if I did, I did not put it into the computer with the rest of my work. Now I am going back and checking all inputted information and making sure that sources are with all data.
I have corrected errors that I had originally copied from reliable sources but have turned out to be wrong. In both of these instances the errors were made when I first stated collecting info and did not realize the importance of documenting all sources. I had blindly folowed someones work that did not have sufficient documentation.

Quality is the key to genealogy. I have put to much work and time to sabotage it all in the interest of quantity.

Dear Researchers--

I have taught Beginning Hispanic Family History in years past and I have always told people that the need for documentation was the most important thing that they could learn from me.

I would like to add two items which I have not seen mentioned. First, whenever I write down my source, I always include the date it was given, along with the name of the person and usually their relationship to the person for whom the information is given. Sometimes, people in their later years, will develope dementia or other problems. I want my records to show if their information came at a time that they could correctly remember or if they might have had memory problems.

The second tip is to say "apparently" when writing about something which is unclear. For example, I will say "apparently Jose and Maria had 10 children". I might find later that they had more or less but I have not nailed myself down to one answer. By using the word "apparently", I have left the door

The first thing you should do if you have this problem is go into your spam folder and see if the mail is ending up there. If so, you will needs to add nuestrosranchos.org as a safe domain with your email provider so that the emails from the list bypass the spam filter.

PS In general you should address technical problems to the moderator email address rather than send them to the whole group via the mailing list.

Names of people with no geographic or chronological context in genealogy are not very meaningful. Names were often repeated and the sources for information will vary greatly by the timeframe involved, so it is very important to always provide dates in inquiries, genealogies, etc.

Thanks, you helped me connect the "dots' to the missing link between the Lazaro Banuelos family and the DE LEONS and my cousins the BANUELOS of my hometown area. When my brother Manuel died in 31 May 2006, I met her descendants at his rosary. They insisted that they were our cousins but they didn't know "how" ..they barely remembered the name of their own mother's (Nicolasa Banuelos) parents Lazaro Banuelos and Mercedes Flores. I promised myself to find the connection. I visited their graves and photographed the tombstones of their family and for the past 18 months I've been searching for the truth.

My mother was the one who had a special bond with Nicolasa Banuelos! I remember back in the late 1940s we went to visit her and I played in the back yard when Nicolasa's turkey (which was taller than I was) got loose and it chased me around the yard...all the time I was screaming for help..and Tia Nicolasa (in my family, older-generation cousins were always called Tio or Tia)

I have a sneaky feeling the ancestors helped you on this one! They were more than ready to be found. I've never seen a line worked on by so many people in such a short time to restore a family line! Well Done Nuestros Ranchos Members!!! This group really does work and shares with an open heart.

Thanks to you (the border-crossings helped) and many others who helped me regarding my "Tia" Nicolasa Banuelos (daughter of Lazaro Banuelos), I also e-mailed an inquiry to all of my cousins and family members and one of them responded with the necessary information. Lazaro Banuelos (born Abt. 1888) was a son of Leocadio Pascual Banuelos who was a brother of one of my maternal great grandmothers Ma. Vicenta Banuelos (Chentita). So therefore Lazaro was a primo-hermano (first-cousin) to Vicenta's daughter Tiburcia Villaneda.(my mother's mother).

Juan de Santiago or de Santiago Escobar

I am trying to sort out an interesting question about Juan de Santiago or de Santiago Escobar.

Hi George, you make a good point, well I think the other 20 children are missing, you could fit in many kids, there are huge gaps especially with Gertrudis Navarro she could have easily had another 8 or 9. As well as the other Gertrudis another 4 or 5. Same thing with Antonia another 4 or so. Don Juan sounds like the guy who had a child every year, I mean 45 he would have to have one every year, unless he had twins several times. another possibility. You could try looking at other "hot spots" where the Spanish of Aguas could go, a popular one, I have stumbled upon is PINOS, ZACATECAS. For some reason you find several of the early settlers going up there. Others include the rest of Aguas, sometimes northern Los Altos usually Lagos or Teocaltiche seem the common places. Also try Nochistlán. But to save time, I guess looking at the "Defunciones" would be helpful too in Aguas, since Id imagine they burried their stillborn (prob had some) where they lived (Aguas) . -Daniel

You do not have to have a child every year or twins to have a large number of children if you are male. When people hear that there were 8 kids in my family they are surprised that it is so large. I do not tell them that My biological father has 35 children from different women. He was from Jalisco. He had many of these children out of wedlock when he was still married to my mother. I know of one half sister that was a few months older than me so we were in the belly at the same time for many months. I have had strangers walk up to me and tell me that they were my sibling or niece.

Richard,

The case of Juan de Santiago Escobar is unusual because he had fortyfive
(45) LEGITIMATE children. None of these were out of wedlock. He married
three times and lived a long life, probably well into his eighties.

What exactly are marriage information records? I have always
understood them to be a record of the publication of marriage banns,
or statements of intent to marry or marriage petitions. But
occasionally I find some that are dated after the fact, as if they
were announcements or were late in being entered into the register
(but these latter were transcribed by someone else so the dates may be
wrong). Can anyone shed light on this?

Second question:

If a marriage record states that the marriage was performed "en la
iglesia parroquial del Pueblo de San José de Gracia", but in the
margin the entry is prefaced by "Río Blanco" ... does that mean the
marriage was performed in a parish church in Río Blanco, which was of
the parrochial jurisdiction of the parish of the Pueblo of San José de
Gracia ... ? or does Río Blanco have some other significance.

While we are on the subject of marriages, has anyone ever seen how much was paid for a marriage dispensation?  I know  my grandfathers' sister told her children that when she and her husband got married they had to pay for a dispensation. Her words were

I think you answered your own first question with your second question. It seems that many marriages were done in capillas and later recorded in the bigger town that had jurisdiction with sometimes jurisdiction is in doubt, like what i find in the valle, and they are listed in two bigger towns.
I have had some information recorded supposedly on the same date at jalos and tepa. Sometimes the recorded date is the date that it actually happened but sometimes it seems to be the date that it was recorded.
sometimes there is a remarriage because sometimes they made them remarry because they did not get a dispensation the first time and were later found to be closely related.

Stuart,
Informaciones Matrimoniales are marriage licences. The processs would start with the couple filing a petition to marry where they express their intention by free will (without being forced in any way). Since the marriage was being sanctioned by the Catholic Church, it had to follow the laws of the Chruch (Holy Council - e.g. Trent). Accordingly, there were specific requirements: being single (or widow or widower), never had expressed a vote of chastity (nuns and priests), not related, publicly express their intention in three festive dates (banns- inter missarum solemnia), and finally, show proof of their condition. To fulfil this last requirement, the couple gave their testimony after making the sign of the cross, and had to present witnesses that would would confirm their statements. Any objection (e.g., being related) would have to be reviewed by Archobishop, who may grant or deny the petion. Often as you mention, the entire process would be completed after the marriage da

In regards to your second question, it is my experience that the margin entry is the town where the couple is from, not where the marriage is performed. Many names in the margin are simply small places served by church where the ceremony is performed. You will find that the majority of these places did not have a local church or for some reason the couple decided not to marry in their local church.

I have found the opposite. the margin entry is where the marriage takes place and where the individual is from is in the body of the record since the individuals getting married were often from different ranches or towns. At least that is how I read it. many times what is in the body of the record is different from what is in the margin.

Yes, that is the way I have seen notes in the margins: The village where the wedding took place is in the margin, and in the body of the record it might say something like "vecino de ------" and gives the place in which the groom or bride was living.

George,

The Juan de Santiago who married Gertrudis Navarro in 1706 is probably the same Juan de Santiago Escobar who married Antonia Ruiz de Esparza in 1665 and Gertrudis Ruiz de Esparza Rangel in 1698. I came across his burial record a couple of years ago, and was surprised to find out that he had a total of 45 children, 24 of them still living in 1729. His burial record reads as follows (verbatim):

"En la villa de Aguas Calientes en primero dia de septiembre de mil setecientos veinte y nuebe años en esta Sa. Thank you very much for the detailed reply! I appreciate the time you took to do this.

I took another look at both Juan de Santiago's death/burial record. My wife and I missed some of the details. We totally missed the estimate of his age.

I also took another look at the marriage record for Juan and Getrudis de Esparza i Rangel. You are quite right, what I read as "Castilla" is just as you said, ""Castissa." With your additional information about the dispensa, I also note that it is mentioned in the marriage record also.

I now need to go and look at all records for the children of all the wives. I've looked at some of them (and in some cases took the IGI index at face value ... I've learned, again, you've got to look at the original records). Some of the IGI records are not the routine extractions, and some of these I could not verify (in my original posting, I used the term "apparently" when I couldn't verify the data).

Another thing I have not yet done, is to do a

"orginarios y vecinos de este lugar" literally translates as "natives and neighbors of this place"

Originario is a person who is originally from a place, so in this context it means that the people were born in the jurisdiccion, as opposed to having migrated there from somewhere else.

Vecino means neighbor which in this context means that they are residents of the jurisdiccion.

Someone who was originally from the place but had moved away would be originario de este lugar y vecino/feligres de "somewhere else"

Someone who had migrated to the jurisdiccion would be listed as originario de "somewhere else" y vecino de este lugar desde hace xxx anos... which would translate as resident of this place since xxx years ago.

Placencia or Robles - or both?

Hello all.

I have found a family in my line that sometimes goes by PLACENCIA, and at other time they are registered as ROBLES.

Claudia,

You have found an example of the beautiful confusion of the Spanish surname system that existed before the standardization of surnames introduced under the Bourbon reforms. Basically, in Spain and Spanish America, it was quite common to give children maternal surnames and sometimes even maternal grandmother's surnames (I have seen many examples of girls being named for their grandmother including her surname and thus having a different surname than all of their siblings).

So in this case, it seems that somewhere down the line, someone could not decide which surname to use and switched back and forth (or perhaps the priest could not choose and switched back and forth). This was quite common and you will run into it more the further back you go. You should stay open to looking for both surnames. It could be that Monica's father used Placencia and Robles and therefore the records for his daughter simply matched whatever name he was using at the time.

Of course, there are

I translate it the same. But this is interesting. Has anyone noticed
whether nuptial blessings are only given the first time round? Or is it
only when it is the first marriage for the woman? I'lll have to go back
