Thanks Letricia, I will look in the 1930 Mexico census for relatives. I am not having much luck making the right connections with either of my family lines ( Villalobos or Olivars) maybe I am looking in the wrong place.

Agreed

I agree with you Claudia.  Oral history is important and can be an absolute genealogical goldmine of information.  Without the little "leads" that my grandparents gave me I'm not sure I would have done as well as I have in my search.  While the search of my Spanish/French/Mexican roots on my grandfather's side has been slow going I've gained so many new cousins on my U.S. born "southerner" grandmother's side.  After I traced it backwards - and the oral history proved to be a checking point for the records I pulled - to the 1500s I then traced it forward and found lots of new cousins...Cousins I have been able to share photographs both old family photos from the 1800s & 1900s and current ones.  It was imazing to be able to see a photograph of my grandmother's great grandmother! And to find grandchildren, great grandchildren & great great grandchildren of my grandmother's long lost aunt.  Oral histoy is what ignited my search and helped send me

I haven't been able to cross paths with many of my fellow genealogists in
NuestrosRanchos concerning my family, the Romo de Vivar branch in
Encarnacion and Tepatitlan, Lagos de Moreno and Aguascalientes. But I have
to put in my 2 cents. I have nearly 100-year-old relatives in Guadalajara
who have faulty recollections of the family history. But their memories are
chock full of information and have helped me sort out the family, even
though our family lore had a grandfather with the wrong family last name.
That garbled information allowed me to discover that Nestor was not a Romo,
but was indeed a grandparent on the distaff side, with another last name.
Oral history is critically important when you are researching family names
as common as Romo, because tiny details can help differentiate one family
branch from another. Agreed, they shouldn't become "facts" in the sense of
genealogic research, but they are invaluable clues in our search for truth.

Wishful thinking Vs. Reality

I glanced at the entries regarding the whole Thomas Edison debate and I couldn't go to bed without imparting my two cents.

I think that in this day and age--and with the information available to us--we must stop perpetrating unproved myths and folklore. At the very minimum for the sake of the credibility of our own hard work and efforts in researching our past.

Claudia,
To you I say "BRAVO". I am in complete concert with your entire post and it is past  time someone said what you have said. I can go weeks without checking Nuestros (such as now) and when I come back I can count on reading more claims of nobility, hacendados, royalty, sangre pura, or conversely, direct decendency from Aztec chieftans.  My all time favorite is the posting by the "fantasma" who claims he has traced his genealogy " all the way back to Adam and Eve"!

Macias / Macías in Jalisco

Hello everyone, my name is José Luis Macías and I am looking for relatives, lots of them! I am drawn to this website, probably for the same reason you all are; I am trying to find out where I come from and in the process bridge the gap between the Macias' that are scattered out there. I’m just starting out on my investigation and so far my attempts to locate family or find out more about my past have been unsuccessful, so all advice is very welcome! I am trying to get a hold of my grandparent’s birth and marriage certificates which means that soon I will have more accurate information to post. For now, this is what I have. Should we find we have common ancestors, I will be more than happy to share more information regarding recent generations. Thank you all for reading; I hope you have something to share.

Descendants of Macias in Jalisco, México

## Generation No. 1

1. ¿? Macías was born around 1886 in Tenamaxtlán Jalisco. He married my GG Grandmother ?? Lucas probably around 1900-1906. She was probably born sometime around 1886.

Children of ¿? MACIAS (GG Grandfather) and ¿? LUCAS (GG Grandmother) are:

i. Francisco Macias Lucas b. Abt 8 Sep 1909, Tenamaxltán, Jalisco, México, d.
Unkown
ii. Basilio Macias Lucas b. Abt 1902-1916, Tenamaxltán, Jalisco, México, d.
Unknown

Notes: Given names of my GG grandparents are unknown. It is uncertain if they had more children (most likely they did, as is usually the case with these “Breeding Stallions” – Abuelo el Sementa!). Based on the accounts of family members, it is possible that one of my GG grandparents had another son named Agustin which is a half brother of the 2 previously mentioned brothers (Francisco and Basilio).

## Generation No. 2

2. Great Grandfather Francisco Macias Lucas (b. Abt 8 Sep 1909, Tenamaxltán, Jalisco, México, d. Abt unknown). He maried Maria Gomez Sanchez (b. 3 Aug 1908) in San Luis Potosí México. The month and day form the birth dates of my Grand Parents are accurate, but the birth year is an approximation. From the accounts of my grand parents I know that my Great Grandfather married when he was 16 years of age, and my Great Grandmother at 15. Yup, they were young, so what!? And you know what else? Apparently there was no money for TV and the tractor was probably broken down leaving them with ample time to propagate (8 children!).

Children of my G Grandfather Francisco Macías Lucas and my G Grandmother María Gomez Sanchez.

i. Ramon Macias Gomez b. 25 Aug 1925, Tenamaxltán, Jalisco, México, d. Abt
1988, San Luis Potosí, San Luis Potosí, México
ii. Agustina Macias Gomez b. Abt 1925-1939, Tenamaxltán, Jalisco, México
iii. Lucia Macias Gomez b. Abt 1925-1939, Tenamaxltán, Jalisco, México
iv. Juana Macias Gomez b. Abt 1925-1939, Tenamaxltán, Jalisco, México, d.
Abt 1995
v. Sirenia Macias Gomez b. Abt 1925-1939, Tenamaxltán, Jalisco, México
vi. Leocadia Macias Gomez b. Abt 1925-1939, Tenamaxltán, Jalisco, México
viii. Felícitas Macias Gomez b. Abt 1925-1939, Tenamaxltán, Jalisco, México
ix. Roberto Macias Gomez b. Abt 1925-1939, d. Abt 2006, San Luis Potosi,
San Luis Potosí, México

Emilie,

Almost all the family of my father come from Encarnación de Diaz, San Juan, Lagos and Aguascalientes.
If you give the name of the grant grand parents and grand parents of your husband, maybe we can know if we are relatives.
I have information from the San Juan de los Lagos "de Alba" since 1600s for the Perez since 1700s.
The name of the grand father of my father is Pastor Perez Lozano, the husband of Maria de los Angeles de Alba Jimenez that mention in my first mail.
The parents of Pastor were: Jose Guadalupe Perez(b.1825) and Ma de la Cruz Lozano Perez(b.9may 1828 in Encarnacion).

Thanks for your comments and the information from Thomas Alva Edison.

No, that is a myth. Alva was a common given name in America, and in the case of Thomas Alva Edison, he may have been given that name to honor someone that had that as a surname. I have also heard of another myth, that Walt Disney was Spanish, born in Spain as a Sephardic Jew, but that has proven false also.

Luis Miguel,

Of course you wouldn't know any American or Canadian or Englishman with that name. If you are from Mexico, Alva or Alba is known to you only as a surname, not a given name. Many Albas or Alvas in Mexico have claimed Thomas Alva Edison as their relative. I find some of those stories coming from Sombrerete, Zacatecas, and now Lester thinks it came from Coahuila. You say the story came from Lagos in Jalisco. Even some people with the surname Alvarez think that his name was really Alvarez. Someone in Jalisco said that a woman from there claimed to be his grandmother, and her surname was Alvarez.

According to John Burton, a descendant of Thomas Alva Edison, the birth of Thomas was recorded in two of their family bibles. Ohio did not require births to be registered in an official civil registry prior to 1870. He was born in Milan, Ohio, the last of seven children. He was named after a Captain Alva Bradley, from Canada, a friend of the family. Captain Bradley's first

I found the family of Thomas Alva Edison listed in the Census of 1850 for Milan, Erie County, Ohio.

Samuel Edison age 45, born in Nova Scotia
Nancy Edison age 40, born in New York
William P. age 19, born in Canada
Harriet V. age 16, born in Canada
Alana [?] (male) age 3, born in Ohio
Stephen Elliott age 55, born in Conn [Connecticut?]

That little 3 year old boy must really be "Alva", not Alana, and he was born in 1847, the year Thomas was born. This family is also listed in later American censuses, so it doesn't look like any of them ever went to Mexico.

It seems to me that we have discussed Tom a good bit. He is resting
peacefully (I hope) so maybe we can let him rest for awhile, what do you
think? But if someone finds a good baptism record or tantalizing piece
of factual information showing evidence to old Tom's Mexican roots well
please bring it on. Why don't we give him a bit of a rest for now or
possibly take it to private email. As always I'm not telling folks what
to do just thinking that this might be best for all.

Hemos hablado de Tomas un poco ya. El esta descansando (Ojala que si)

Hola J.Cristobal:

Hello Cristobal,

I live 30 min away from San Juan de los Lagos, in Valle de Guadalupe, and I have also heard that same story from the older people here that Thomas Alba Edison was born somewhere in Los Altos and that he went to live to the US when he was young. It would be nice to lookup his birth certificate to see who his parents were.

Not a problem , to tell you the truth that has been a rumor in Santiago for a very long time but no one has ever been able to prove it .
I am in contact with several people there that are historians and genealogist and not one of them can even state what the gentleman has stated to you .

Oh well , my family there are Tamez, Saldivar , Almaguer and of course Alvarado they all are very fair of skin and blue eyes and then we start to shade down sort of . ;-)

Question for Daniel Mendez

Hello Daniel! I had been wondering about Quezada surname in your rootsweb database, what was your source? ´Cause it brings out my curiosity that in this, my era, I always knew my last name is Leon, then about three years ago I found out about the Cos or Coss from my research in films, and then and last I met the Quezada added to Coss Y Leon in your data. So, what is the source?

Comment

Quezada in the early films from Silao I have seen Quezada and Coss y Leon, Coss, Cos, Leon, use interchangably not sure where we get Quezada but must be in Aragon prob a grandfather. Mariano Gonz. Leal is said to publicate research about this family in one of coming volumes, so we will have to wait what he says. Im sure hes also seen Quezada. I will try to get the exact film numbers so you can see Quezada for yourself. -Daniel

A few days ago I sent the attached information to Gloria Fuentes and (I thought) to Nuestros Ranchos;  but I have not seen it posted with the rest of the correspondence, and I don't think Gloria got it either;  so I'm re-sending it.  Hopefully this time I have the right   address(es) and it gets posted in the general correspondence.

Macias in Jalpa

Amelia, I have the civil records from Jalpa from 1887 - 1895. I am almost
done with them. Where do you live? Perhaps instead of returning them, if you
live close by, LDS will allow me to forward them to a LDS center near you.

Comments

Comment

I'm almost 100% certain that the LDS won't allow transferring of films
like this but what is the worst that can happen so go ahead and ask. It
could be that they might make an exception, who knows.

Arturo gave some great paths to follow in finding the names of your
grandparents. I'd agree that finding the full names of your grandparents
is your immediate goal because I'm almost positive that your grandfather
was not only a Jose Macias but probably a Jose _____ Macias and your
grandmother a Maria _____ Tostado. If you get their full names then you
might be able to find some of your fathers older siblings baptism
records on that one film that ends in 1919. Yes you have some home work
to do right in the Jalpa records before you expand to other areas, but
yes the other areas will be sources to pursue in time.

You are in for a bit of a rocky ride because it appears that the baptism
documents from Jalpa for the relevant period (1860-1880) are not filmed by
FHL. I don't know if they were destroyed or simply not filmed. In any
case, you will have to look somewhere else.
>
> The first place to start is to find out your grandmother's last name.
The birth certificate or baptism record of your father/mother should list
this and if it is a Mexican birth certificate or baptism record, it should
also list the grandparents' names

Comment

Hi Ruben, no I am not that sophisticated. I looked through the micro fiche
film manually. From 1891, for the most part, the paternal and maternal
grandparents are recorded but prior to that you only have parents, and witnesses. I
should have started with the church records first but I didn't. As I said, I am
almost done with those years and will be returning them soon, however, if you
have a specific person and know what year they were born, I will more than
happy to see if I can find it.

Jalpa since 1880.

There is a connection of between these Chavez and a rancho called El

of Serafin Chavez in Jalpa told me this last year and I also confirmed in the
records I have reviewed.

Let me know if I am correct and I will share more information.

Lupe,

Actually I have that information, but currently I am remodeling my house and
don't have that information handy. In my research I ran across a birth record
of one of his children in late 1897 -1903 and made a copy of it. It has his
parents and his wife's parents names that is how I realized he was not brother
to Daniel Chavez but most likely his first cousin. I made a copy of it
because further in my research if they are indeed first cousins then I have too
leads to go by. Also, I believe Vicente Chavez Sanchez was also related to my
great-grandmother Emiteria Sanchez Flores. I go to the family research center on

If you are serious about doing geneology then we can work together on this

Hola Lupe,

I didn't say you said Thomas was from Coahuila, just that the story also came from there. The Edison descendant said he wouldn't care if Thomas was born in Mexico if he was, but he knows he wasn't. Why should it be proved otherwise?

Emilie,

Maybe you can't see where you are implying that I believe that Thomas comes from Coahila but , when a person says " I THINK " that implies that they may believe it or may believe it to be TRUE .

I, in no way THINK or BELIEVE this to be true or possible .

As for the proof , don't you think as a genealogist you've learned that word of mouth cannot be enough we all look for documents and or in this case as someone mentioned a DNA test .

Hopes this clears up some of the issues here Emilie . Let's end this one here , OK .

Take care,

Just had to put my 2 cents worth in.. This dialogue shows how many of us who are working on documenting the truth that may change the family stories is sometimes uncomfortable or unwelcome by older family members.  Oral traditions usually have at least a grain of truth and when we discover records disproving the stories/history that the elders have shared it is not always received with open arms. Most people don't like to be told things that change their truth as they have known it.

In my Castanon family we have had a family reunion once a year for the last 30 years.  I usually share what I've found that year proving or disproving our history from the district of Jerez Zacatecas.. I have learned to temper what I share since it is not always welcome.

My research proved we were not French or German as I was told by my grandfather. My researched showed my gr-grandparents were cousins, that certainly was not welcomed since my Fathers generation knew them and just knew that "good"

I apologize if I misinterpreted what you had said.

What I was trying to point out to people in Mexico who think that Alva Edison was a surname, is that in America men used old-fashioned given names out of the Bible, and that in Mexico he would have been known as Thomas Alva Edison Elliott.

I found Thomas listed originally in a census as Alvah, and it comes from the Bible, Chronicles 1: "The chiefs of Edom were: chiefs Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, 52 Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 53 Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 54 Magdiel, and Iram; these are the chiefs of Edom".

Espero tu respuesta.

Hasta pronto, recibe saludos.> From: miggychino@msn.com> To: general@nuestrosranchos.org> Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2008 19:34:49 -0700> Subject: Re: [Nuestros Ranchos] DE LA TORRE DE SANTA ANA JALOSTOTITLAN JALISCO> > Jose Maria, Tengo 10 hijos de Buenaventura y Maria Feliciana Alvarez, no tengo a Francisco que año nacio? Juan Cristobal,

I sent that link to my husband's Encarnacio de Diaz familie to your prodigy e-mail address, since I saw that it can't be opened from the Nuestros Ranchos site.

Fw: To Juan Cristobal re Encarnacion Families

Juan Cristobal,

I meant to say that my husband's great-grandmother was Marciana Cervantes. I left out a generation there. My husband's grandfather, father of Enrique, was Primitivo Garcia, and his grandmother was Maria Hinojosa.
