submit our DNA and possibly confirm beyond the shadow of a doubt some of
the things we're finding:

Wow (2) I'm totally amazed at how much we are coming together as a
group. I feel like the info we're contributing is important and not the
kind of stuff you find on other groups. thanks everyone for staying
focused. At the same time there's nothing that says you can't
occasionally post an account or a picture or two of a family activity.
Afterall we all might be related*** and genealogy is about us as a family.

Wow Patricia what a great message. I don't know what is the problem with
us new researchers we can't see the forest with all these trees around.
Why I've been ignoring the 1930 census escapes me. For some reason I've
just completely overlooked this resource---maybe because I got hung up
on 1930 not being all that old. But for my Current main goal of finding
the Side Branches*** to my family the 1930 Census is exactly what I
need. And your listing of all the good info included in it makes my

***I've kind of been on a leave of abscence for the last 3 months in
looking backward for the parents of my oldest ancestors. I've come to
the conclusion that all these relatives that I'm searching for in the
1700's have no current memories in the minds of the people that are
alive right now, but there are plenty of relatives that I don't know
about that ARE alive now that have a wealth of information that I need
to successfully find those older and ancient generations. Therefore I've
set aside the backward hunt and am in the process of seeking out the
side branches. I've called all the Puentes in Guadalajara and found 4
families of Puentes that are related. I've also called Torreon, Coahuila
and Juarez, Chihuahua. I'm using my Sundays and unlimited nationwide
calling to call Puentes all over the country. I'd like to recommend
doing something like this. I'm sure you all also have lost branches of
your family that are possibly right in your own state. This past
saturday I found a Puentes cousin that lived in Richmond, California
when I lived in Richmond in 1974 but now they live in Sacramento. As you
all interview your family members please don't neglect to ask there key
questions:

     I know what you mean by no cooperation from the mother-in-law.  
I had that problem myself but just worked around her.  My father-law 
gave me the best information that he could and I used it when I 
looked at the official records. 
     As for my husband, he has no patience to do the actual work but 
he will pay for any field trips that we take.  Last year, amoung 
other places, we drove up to Yahualica, Jalisco.  It was a most 
beautiful place.  I took some pictures and it was this trip that 
convinced us to get a video camera for future trips. 
     As for the Godinez name, I understand that it is not common.  I 
go back very far with my records and even have some of the family 
baptisms in Jamay.  However that is a few hundred years back.
For now, I think the best thing for you and most beginning 
researchers is to get what they can from other family members and 
papers kept at home and then try to get the 1930 Census for their 
area.
    The 1930 Census will help to put the family in units in their 
different villages, ranchos, etc.  If your ancestor/ relative was not 
born yet, you will find the ones that came before or you could 
possible see them as youngsters in their own family.  It has a wealth 
of information which makes a good start in knowing what to order in 
Microfilms for Baptisms, Marriages, and Deaths, etc.

     Here is what the Census will contain:

     Nombre y Apellido
     Sexo
     Edad--años o meses
     Estado Civil--Soltero, Casado por lo Civil, Casado por la 
       Iglesia, Unida Nbre, Viudo, Divorciado
     Saber O No Leer y Escribir
     Profesion U Ocupación--Quehaceres Domesticos, Jornalero de 
       Campo, Medico, Ingenjero, Mayordomo, Carpintero, Criado, 
       Costura, etc.
     Lugar de Nacimiento
     Nacionalid
     Idioma
     Defectos Fisicos O Mentales
     Religión 

     I will close with a yes for a trip in the future to use the great
Family History Library in Salt Lake.  I have only been there once and 
only for a couple of hours.  I was on vacation and was afraid that if 
I stayed longer, my husband would not be able to drag me out.  Ha-ha-

When we go to FHL in SLC, I feel right at home since most of the 
workers there smile at me as if they know me.  Actually they think I 
am my twin sister who goes there about 2-3 times a month.

Momax areas.  I have since highlighted them in green and sent them to 
the file database as a word.doc.  These films are permanently shelved 
in SLC.  This word.doc includes only those three cities listed 
above.  On our next trip to the SLC library, we will do an inventory 
of Jalisco, Lagos de Moreno, Totatiche, Santa Maria, and for 
Zacatecas, Tepechitlan, Monte Escobedo, and Sanches Roman 
(Tlaltenango).   On our individual city word.docs for film inventory, 
we simply insert the names and birth dates that we am researching 
between the film numbers.  This then makes our 'research log' that we 
take to the library.  These film inventory word.docs tell us what 
documents we have found on a film number and what documents to look 
for in a film.  If we have found a document, we then change the font 
to green,  if we don't find a document, we then follow the notation 
with a NO, so we won't re-check that film again.  It also tells us 
what films to order ahead of time to be there waiting for us when we 
get there.  Fortunately there is no charge for ordering films at SLC 
and they are also automatically shelved there permanently.
 
What about a future research trip for the Ranchos Group.  If we plan 
far enough ahead of time (1-2 years), maybe we as a group can meet at 
the FHL, SLC.  Before then, Rich and I can take an inventory of the 
films you are working on and make sure they are there waiting for 
you.  We also have another trip planned this June.  Give it some 
thought.
  
Rich and I will get our 'introduction' together and submit it to 
Ranchos.

HI.  What I meant by not getting any cooperation is from my husband's mother, aunts, cousins, etc.  Although it was my idea to start the research for our chilren, my husband is now interested as well.  I do know that my mother-in-law was born in Jamay in 1939.  I believe she came to the US when she was around 12-14 years of age.  Her father, Catarino was born in 1905 and died in 1953 and I don't know if he ever came to the US.  Her mother's name was Margarita Lopez, born in 1904 and died in 1992 in the US.  I'm not sure when she came to the US.  I just found out yesterday the names of her grandparents.  They were Florentino & Marciala (ortega) Godinez and Felix & Tiburcia (gonzalez) Lopez. 

Can you please tell me how I can find out where to find my local family history center and how to use the list that you have informed me of.  As you can tell, my search has just started so I know I have alot to learn yet.

I'm researching these areas--- Jalisco: Colotlan, Santa Maria de Los
Angeles, Rancho de Animas, Salto de Los Romeros, Sauz de Los Marquez,
Ojo de Agua, Sotoles, Huejucar and a few other Ranchos in the Colotlan
jurisdicion (if that is the right word for it). Zacatecas:
Sombrerete, Rancho de Los Negros in the Villanueba district, Coculiten,
Momax, Tlaltenango, Tepechitlan, and Tepetongo.

I guess I really need to clarify what I mean. I have relatives that come
from or I believe come from these areas. I've actaully researched some
and am moving toward the research of the other. With thoroughness being
a strict requirement it might take me years to get to some of these but
you never know. I mentioned them all just in case some of you all might
be working in these areas.

Godinez.  I too, am researching my husband's family tree.  My mother-
in-law's maiden name is Godinez and she is from Jamay, Jalisco.  Her 
names is Victoria and her parents were Catarino & Margarita(Lopez) 
Godinez.  Unfortunately. I am not getting any cooperation with any 
living relatives so I have begun the search on my own.  Not having 
much luck due to the fact I don't have much information to start off 
with.

Hello group my name is Carol Muro-Turner.  I live in Kansas City and 
have been doing research for about 3-4 yrs.  My father (David Muro) 
and I have gone on this wonderful adventure researching our roots and 
have made pretty good progress.  Hopefully soon we can upload our 
files, we are in the process of grouping our family together.  The 
names we are researching are Muro, Carrillo, Sanchez, Haro, Saldana, 
Marquez, Rodgriguez, De Casas.  I have seen many Muro marriages with 
Puentes, Cortez, Romero, Diaz, etc. The films we have viewed are from 
Colotlan and Santa Maria De Los Angeles, we have started to view some 
films from Villanueva, Zacteucs.  My Muro family is from Sauz de Los 
Marquez near SM and Colotlan.  Our Carrillo's are from Hujecar as well 
as the Sandovals.  

Joseph..you are doing a job keeping us all informed and I appreciate

years and have just really gotten in to my own Canadian roots in the 
last couple of years.
     My husband was born in the rancho of Santa Rita, in Ayo el Chico 
area, in 1950.  His family still has land there and our most recent 
visit was last March 2002.  It was then that I had the opportunity to 
meet Hugo Moises in Capilla de Guadalupe.  Previously, we had met on 
the Internet.  He is distantly related to my husband.  I also know 
Steven Hernandez, from meetings with our SHHAR (Society of Hispanic, 
Historical,and Ancestral Research) group.  He too is distantly 
related to my husband Ramon Godinez.
     I have many names in my files but I am best with research in the 
Atotonilco el Alto area of Jalisco.  I work at a Family History 
Center in Bonita, California which has other films that are part 
of my research.  Some of those films cover Ayo el Chico, Tepatitlan 
de Morelos, La Barca, and Jalostotitlan.

I have been sending a lot of info to the group and will continue to do
so as long as I think its relevant to our research. At the same time I
absolutely dislike having a cluttered inbox so if any of you would like
to change from "Individual Messages" to the "Digest" mode of
subscription please do (or just tell me and I'll switch you myself). The
difference is that instead of getting each individual message at the
time the sender sends it you'll get one message daily with all the
discussion that took place that day in one larger message. The latter
makes it easier to handle an active group. . .then again we quite
haven't gotten there but I'm thinking of asking on the Jalisco and
Zacatecas group is anyone is doing Research in Northern Jalisco or
Southern Zacatecas. (I can't help but believe that is we get 10-20

Thanks again for those census records.  I printed them all and found 
even more names that were already in my database!
To answer your question about getting the tilde to stay...you have to 
enter unicode characters.  You accomplish this by pressing and 
holding down the Alt key and enter (on the numeric pad with the Num 
Lock key on) 164 then release the Alt key.  There are other codes for 
accented vowels, such as, Alt+160 for á, Alt+161 for í, Alt+130 for 
é, etc.

So many of my Puentes relatives (their branches) are lost and on this I found
5 Ranchos in other parts of Mexico that are called "Puentes." Hey you never
know but many generations ago some of my Puentes might have moved to these
places and established a Rancho named after them. I'll have to check this
out later.

Another fact I wanted to mention is that I have some ancestors from
Tepechitlan, Zacatecas.  That is my Castañeda line in the Sanchez.rtf

[[[[[[[[I have Castaneda (how do you get the Tilde to stay over the n???) relatives via my ggggg grandfather Juan Jose Diaz that married Maria Concepcion Castaneda, but I don't know her fathers name to be able to pursue a possible link. And by the way this Juan Jose Diaz is possibly related to your Juan Jose Diaz' but I'm unsure how to go about pursuing this well have to wait and see if this info reveals itself.

Welcome to the group. Speaking only for myself I'm a newcomer to Genealogy
just having opened my eyes to its wonders back in August of 2002. But since
then its been a wild and wooly ride and it continues to be. I've met your
primo Steve Hernandez on the phone a couple of months ago. It would be my
dream if he would consider joining this group and taking us all under his
wing in our journey's. He has a wealth of information and he'd be a great
addition to the groups expertise.



You are the first person in this small community that is doing research in
Tepatitlan (is that close to San Juan de Los Lagos--the area I seem to recall
Steve said he was researching)? Though I understand that we have some research
going on in the Lagos de Moreno area that is not far from San Juan de Los
Lagos.



I really don't know exactly where to find more info but if it were me doing
this search I might try to find info on those individuals that were on the
ships that came from Spain. I know the following website is possibly a little
early and possibly the wrong location (Cuba) but who knows if he came directly
to Mexico or stopped off in Cuba first. Anyway I'm giving this as only an
example of what's available on passenger manifest logs for ships from Spain:

Jose Pio is on your Vital's list and I believe Pio was on

He remarried again to a Gregoria Varela.

if you are talking about the Francisco
that was married to Gregoria Varela then you are more interested in
Vital than Juan because the Francisco that

married Gregoria Varela was son to Vital (see the following LDS Info):
