Dear Rayna,

Maria Ursula Velasco Villalbaso (Villabaso Luna y Velasco) and Bernardo (Fernando) Aseves are the parents of Jose Manuel Aseves

Maria Ursula Villabaso y Luna Velasco is the daughter of Francisco Xavier Villavaso (Velasco in baptismal record but it may be a mistake by the scribe and the Velasco comes from Lorezas mother.) (indio) and Lorenza Josefa Luna y Velasco (española)

Lorenza Josefa Luna y Velasco is the daughter of Jose Anastacio de Luna and Francisca Geronima Velasco

Bernardo Aseves is the son of Juan de San Pedro Aseves and Maria Gertrudis Lugo

Thank you for your replies and your help. I am still a little confused. The reason is because of conflicting baptismal records where everything appears to agree, except for one little detail. For example, I found a baptismal record that appears to be a younger brother of Manuel, Jose Francisco de la Trinidad Asebes Villalbazo. This is Image 166 Film 224942. It shows Franciscos parents to be Bernardo Asebes and Maria Urzula Villalbazo. It shows the paternal gtandparents to be Pedro Asebes and Maria Gertrudis Paz (not Lugo). The maternal grandparents are Francisco Xabier Villalbazo and Maria Josefa Dias (not Lorenza Josefa Luna).

On the baptismal record of Jose Trinidad Bailon Asebes Villalbazo, whom I believe to be another brother, the only difference in parentage if the maternal grandmother whom it shows as Maria Francisca Dias. Image 266 Film 224942

Again, thank you!

This should help explain some of the differences in names:

Josepha Lorenza Diaz Velasco is the daughter of Jose Diaz and Francisca Velasco

Juan de San Pedro Asveves is the son of Salvador Aseves and Michaela Serrano y Luna

Maria Gertrudis Paz y Luna is the daughter of Francisco Paz + Josepha De la Cruz Lugo

Micaela Serrano y Luna is the daughter of Juan Serrano and Efigenia de Luna

Salvador Aseves is the son of Salvador Aseves and Ana de Diaz Contreras

Francisco de la Paz (junior)is the Son of another Francisco Xavier de la Paz (senior) and Catharina de la Meza

Josepha de la Cruz Lugo is the Daughter of Antonio de Lugo and Maria Vicenta

Oh my goodness! This would take me months (at least) to come up with this! I am grateful beyond words!

So it seems to me, that the maternal name used in these baptismal records is somewhat arbitrary. Is that correct, or am I missing something really important here?

Thank you!

Dear Rayna,

The use of different surnames was common in those times. It makes it frustrating at times but This practice also provides clues as to the ancestry.

Miguel, the relationship is complicated, but Ventura and Refugio are not brother and sister. I believe they may be primos, but cannot yet prove it.

Rita is Anacleto's tia. Her father is my 7th great grandfather

I've been working on this for almost 18 years and have marriage records, baptism records, dispensia's and more for all these families. Everything I have is documented. Ventura is the brother of my 5th great grandfather.

I know Ventura had at least 8 children and I am aware of 3 sons, Joaquin, Santiago, and Joseph. Unless I missed one, you must be a descendant of one of these men.

It's too much to put here. Please contact me directly at rm1jr@yahoo.com if you want to learn more.

Some clues that I have about the Triana second generation family, two brothers, the

It is rumored that they were first cousins. Martin Guzman Triana, Emiliano Gomez Triana, and Cipriano Triana were first cousins, perhaps second cousins to my grandfather Felix Triana Vidaña in someway. Does anyone else know how they are relatives?

I also want to find out is if any of you have more information about who was Pedro Triana, husband of Maria Rudecinda Vitela. Their children were Quirino Triana

Informacion Matrimonial

Hello Nuestros Ranchos Forum,

So the bann is the public announcement of the pending marriage (nowadays posted in boards outside the churches, previously probably announced verbally), the license is the permit for the pending marriage, and the contract is the document signed by bride and groom after the marriage. So the Información Matrimonial is more like the license since they get information on the bride and groom in order to see if there is no problem with the pending marriage. The Dispensa would also be a license if there was indeed some problem. The marriage record would be the contract and many times they mention the dates of the bann announcements (usually on 3 different dates before the marriage).
In Mexico sometimes they refer to a divorce as the dissolution of the marriage contract.

Hi Danny,

Even though the IM announces the bride and groom's intention to contract marriage, I would say it's more like a marriage license.

It usually means testimony from both parties and also witnesses. Information as to their marital status: ages, parents' names, if eligible with Catholic previous rite requirements, single status or widow or widower, if they are good Catholics / citizens. Also if and how the prospective bride or groom may be related to each. Witnesses also attest to their status and if they are eligible to marry each other. Often there are "troncos" (pedigree trees) if they are cousins. etc.

Dear Arturo,

I believe that Chris is right, we are dealing with the same Brigida, and she has Gonzalez Ruvalcaba Lozano and Reyes in her ancestry. Where I disagree with Chris is where she gets the ruvalcaba from. I am only guessing but I think she gets it from the Gonzalez-Ruvalcaba y Lozano of the family from her maternal grandmother.

Jose Dionicio Aguilar is the same person as Leonicio Aguilar. I have often seen Dionicio and Leonicio used interchangeably.

There is however an issue between the abuelo paternos that you name and the ones that I name. They are not the same people.

Dear Arturo and Chris,

Since we have two different primary sources identifying different paternal grandparents, I am guessing that one couple is the biological parents of Jose Maria Garcia and the second set may have been his adoptive parents. I am theorizing that his parents passed away and he was taken in by family. Just a theory.

Hi Arturo,

I actually am not taking a position on where the Robalcava name comes from, I'm just reading the record. If it comes from her mother, than one of the records is wrong, but, the Brigida's are definitely the same. The problem is the multiple names. I actually am not sure that all the errors are from the various records, some may come from the family itself. There's too many different names for them to all be mistakes of the priest or the scribe. I'm thinking something else may be going on here. Possibly, Brigida's parentage was not fully known, or came to light at a later date, or some other scenario. Also, now I'm not sure any of these names are correct. It's unusual not to find any records for names in Aguascalientes, which is pretty well indexed. There doesn't appear to be an Antonio Reyes and Josefa Lozano in this time frame or an Ygnacio Robalcava and Josefa Reyes either. Here's a similarly named couple to the Brigida Robalcava record, it's for a Eustaquio Robalcava and

Hi R.A. Ricci, well if this is true, it puts a different spin on things. My certificate of Camilo Garcia, indicates that he is YNDIO, the question is, Jose Andres and Camilo Garcia are both hijos legitimos of Jose Maria Garcia and Vicenta
Aguilar. However on his Bautismo, dated July 19, 1809, Asuncion de Maria Aguascalientes, Bautismos de castas 1807-1812, Image 272 and 273, lists his parents as:

Father: Jose Maria Garcia
Mother: Maria Vicenta Aguilar
Abuelos Paternos: Jose Bartolo Garcia y Maria Margarita Salas
Abuelos Maternos: Jose Dionicio Aguilar y Maria Eucevia Vocanegra

According to your research: Parents of Jose Maria Garcia are:
Antonio Garcia and Eusebia Martinez, info extracted from Bautismo of Jose Andres Garcia, Feb. 7, 1816 Image 483 of 502 Espanol.

The problems are, Camilo is caste as Yndio.
Jose Andres as Espanol
Camilo's Abuelos are Jose Bartolo Garcia y Maria Margarita Salas
as indicated in his bautismo July

This is the first time I've come across a family that has used this many different names. It makes it very difficult to track down. Here's more names for you. Camilo Garcia is the son of Jose Maria Salas and Vicenta Aguilar. Jose Maria Salas and Vicenta Aguilar were married on 1 October 1808. Jose Maria Salas is the natural born son of Margarita Salas. Vicenta Aguilar is the daughter of Dionicio Aguilar and Eusebia Lopez, another new apellido.

I would agree, however, I have documents through bautismos and matrimonios that discount this theory. Jose Maria was a very common first and middle name during those periods. My ancestry documented history begins with my bisabuelos paternos, Jose Angel Garcia Macias and Francisca Natalia Mendoza Tiscareno. I took a trip to Aguascalientes, and interviewed my cousin x2, Maria de Los Dolores Garcia Ruiz de La Pena 90x yrs of age daughter of my great uncle Ricardo Garcia Mendoza, also collected the book Cuatro Valores Aguascalentenses, author by Jose Antonio de La Torre Garcia, written in honor of his grandfather Jose Angel Garcia Macias, uncle Rafael Garcia Macias and Primos Ricardo Garcia Mendoza and Antonio Garcia Mendoza. During this trip I was able to gathered names and dates of birth of Jose Angel and Francisca Natalia sons and daughters. Comment

Hi Arturo,

Jose Maria is a very common name in that era. But, Jose Maria with the exact same named mother, (Margarita Salas) and the exact same named wife, (Vicenta Aguilar), who also happens to have the exact same named father, (Dionicio Aguilar) and a mother with the exact same given name, (Eusebia), is far less common. This doesn't mean Bartolo Garcia isn't his father, it just means he's a natural born child. I also don't believe this is the last hijo natural. This would also explain why there's no marriages for some of these couples, even though this is one of the best indexed areas. I would also not rely too heavily on everything that was told by family members, until it's backed up with records. I was told various things by family members, much of which turned out inaccurate, or, in some cases, completely wrong, once the actual records were found. I think there's little doubt that this is the correct Jose Maria Garcia(Salas).

Hi Chris, hijos/hijas naturales was very common based on my encounter of certificates I came across,(not in the Garcia Clan)I have not found one certificate suggesting that. I need to correct one statement, Jose Angel Garcia Macias and Francisca Natalia Mendoza Tiscareno are my maternal bisabuelos. I am the son of Francisca Garcia Yanez and Fernando de Leon Medina, my grandparents
were Jose Jesus Garcia Mendoza and Emilia (Edmigda) Yanez Macias, Emilia was the Natural daughter of Alejandro Yanez of Pinos Zacatecas and Teresa Macias Guardado Villa Garcia Zacatecas. My interview with Maria de Los Dolores Garcia Ruiz de La Pena, was confirming what I already had from my grandfather sons and daughters, here in Texas. She did not suggest nor influence me in anyway as to the family in Aguascalientes, social and educational status. All that information is recorded in their defunciones . Hi Arturo,

No one is suggesting anything about hijos naturales and the Garcia's. I have dozens of hijos naturales in my family. I'm suggesting that that's one possible explanation for the inconsistencies in records and multiple apellidos. I'm also not suggesting that you disregard your families oral and written history, I'm just suggesting that it needs to be confirmed with actual records, and, if those records show contradictory evidence, than you may need to disregard portions of what you may have heard. All of us in the forum are trying to assist you. I believe both records that I provided are your correct ancestors. I believe if your review them thoroughly you will come to the same conclusion.

Hello everyone,

I agree with Chris in that this one is a big puzzle with many pieces but we are having trouble putting them together because of multiple use of names and information about what seems to be the same.people. The issue about different races is really not an issue. I have seen the same person referred to as three or four different racial classifications. Sometimes they would look at the color of the skin of the child and come up with the classification. I have seen the same person classified as mestizo, tresalvo, and espanol; each classification in a different document. The issue here is the numerous names for what seem to be the same people.

I do not have an answer for this dilemma. What I do know is that Chris has done excellent work when helping me out with my Perez-Gallo family line. I have a lot of respect for Chris's work and conjectures.

Hi Arturo,
It's not possible at all that it's a different Brigida. It is possible that this family used multiple apellidos or errors took place in various records, but the Brigida's are the same. First, there is not one baptism taking place for Camilo Garcia and Brigida Reyes, prior to the marriage of Camilo Garcia and Brigida Robalcava. Second, the Paternal grandparents are exactly the same for Camilo Garcia. Third, Camilo Garcia would have had to marry two women named Brigida, and the first Brigida would've had to have died prior to his 1835 marriage to Brigida Robalcava. And, clearly that's not the case, since Camilo Garcia and Brigida Reyes are still have children in the 1840's:

Hi Arturo,

I think you're looking in the wrong time frame for the baptism of Nicolas Garcia. I don't think he was born in 1830, but instead closer to 1836, based on his parents marriage in July of 1835: [https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-X2M3-1FG ]. Sadly, the names again are slightly different from yours, although still similar. Here the bride and groom are listed as Camilo Garcia and Brigida Robalcaba. The paternal parents are listed as Jose Maria Garcia and Visenta Aguilar. The Maternal parents are listed as Ygnacio Robalcaba and Josefa Reyes. Brigida apparently used her mother's name. Jose Maria Saavedra

Hello Nuestros Ranchos Forum,

Could someone tell me what these two words mean on this defuncion for Jose
Maria Saavedra.

It says "herrero" (blacksmith), indígena (indian)". Indígena literally means local or native, but in this particular case means specifically "indian", a term that was common in colonial times but less favoured in independent Mexico. That after "indigena" the text clarifies "del mismo origen y vecindad" (same birthplace and residence than the person above), makes clear that with "indigena" he was trying to say "indian" and not only just "native".

Comment

Dear Danny,

Never translate words in isolation. Look up the words and get a word definition, but always remember that how the word is used and when it is used is important. Blacksmith is misspelled but it's a death record so you will often find a profession after a deceased persons name. If it had been a marriage record then you would expect espanol or tresalvo or Indio instead of a profession. I have seem some marriage records with a profession after a name but this is not common.

As to the native word, it does not mean Indian here. You have to look at the word "indigena" here with the other words in the rest of the sentence. It is in a death record, not a marriage record, and it is right after the profession is given. In this case the record states that he and his wife are originally from there and that they were known to be residents there.

Dear Danny,

Your welcome. Your thanks are greatly appreciated. I am impressed with your devotion to genealogy at such a young age. I was interested in it at your age but mostly listened as my tio (great uncle) Doctor Rito Romo Franco would explain to me his latest findings. He would also tell me how I was related to the many people that we met while walking around town.

There was one lady, a great great aunt, that I thought was really old because she was in her seventies. I would later visit her when she was in her eighties and nineties. She lived to be over one hundred. She passed away decades ago so some of her stories were very old. She was a partera "birth nurse" for many people in the town so she always had stories about how this person was related to that person.

One of my favorite stories is the one a great great aunt of mine would tell me of when she was a little child hiding in a tree and throwing fruit at Santo Toribio Romo as he walked down the street. She made him

Danny,

I am doing a family tree for my adopted daughter. Her g-g grandfather was an Estevan Saavedra. He was from Degollado and Arandas in Jalisco. Saavedra is an unusual name (for me). I wonder if Estevan was related to your Jose Saavedra. Do you know the origin of that surname?

Emilie,

i missed this email. I heard the name a lot. I think Saavedra is pretty
common. I looked it up and it says its a goth name meaning Old House. I
asked my mom and she says goths are people that wear black makeup in
school, so i think these are different goths. If you tell me who your
Saavedra's ancestors are I can see if they link with mine.

Hi Danny,

These would be the Visigoths or western Goths -a Germanic tribe that invaded Rome in the 4th century and ruled Spain in the early Dark Ages.

herrero = blacksmith,

indigeno = indigenous

Thus an indigenous blacksmith. The surname Herrera comes from the word
Herrero., son of an herrero, son of a blacksmith.

Even though the spelling is a little off it does mean blacksmith. The second word should be taken in context with the words that are written after that. It is saying that he , like his wife, are both originally , and residents, from that same area.

It sounds like (Hebrew)

Hi Danny,

I don't know if I can help much but I'll try. The word for "hebrew" in
Spanish is "hebreo" and "v" and "b" are sometimes used interchangeably for
one another in a word. Though the writer wrote "hebrero". Still I think
Esther may be onto something.

From what limited amount I can read the woman has the same origin and comes
from the same vicinity as the legitimate son Jose. I know that many Jews
came over from Spain and the Iberian Peninsula and intermarried in Mexico.
My family has some Jewish blood from the Acevedo and Mercado sides. The
writer may be describing this woman and her son Jose (if i'm reading that
correctly) as being Jewish/Hebrew in origin. Maybe another person can
better translate this article.

Hope this helps a bit.
Good luck!

Hi Danny,

He's a Blacksmith, not a Jew. The word is herrero, not hevrero, which isn't
the word for Hebrew either way. Hebrew would be Hebreo, but, if he was a
Jew, they would've wrote Judío, not Hebreo. The second word, indígena, I
believe is referring to him being native to the same region of San Luis
Potosí, not of being indigenous in origin.

Have a great day,

Ashlynn

If it's herrero then it means iron worker or Blacksmith. The problem is that it looks more like hevrero.
Then the next word means indicates, so ti is saying they are getting the information from his wife who is from the same area.

Hi Simona,

Theresa de Herrera y Quijas is my 11th great grandmother and based on her name, I'm guessing she's the daughter of Captain don Pedro de Quijas Escalante and Catalina de Saldaña, daughter of Antonio de Alcaraz and Leonor Herrera de Saldaña.

Don Pedro de Quijas Escalante married to Catalina de Saldaña, are my 7th great grandparents through Phelipa. They were the first I looked at as they have Herrera in their line. The timeline is right. I have 14 children for them.
Thanks for the info Chris!

Hi Danny,
Based on this marriage of 1722, I'm guessing Manuela Mireles was born about 1700. There is a well known Mireles family from Nuevo Leon. The Domingo Mireles could correspond to Domingo de Castro Mireles Caballero who did use the name Domingo de Mireles. He lived in the same time frame as your Manuela Mireles. I don't believe he was old enough to be the father, but, it's possible he is the brother. I'm not really that familiar with these Nuevo Leon families, but, I have seen his named mention on several genealogies compiled by John Inclan. You might want to check those.

Alice,

I feel your pain at not finding the names of the bride and groom's parents on the marriage records. Now it only means you have to get more creative and find the birth of the grandchildren which will surely have the names of the parents on the baptismal records.

For some reason, there are certain rolls of film for certain periods that don't include the parent's names. I don't know if it was by decree from Spain, from the church or just lazy Parish scribe or priest but it seems to occur in specific time / year spans.

It's funny how genealogy has the ability to bring you up just as quickly as you're let down.
The pain I was avoiding was the one I feel in my pocket from ordering so many films!  Since there were two contemporaries with the same name, I thought I'd order the sure thing-the marriage film of the correct Marcos and get the parents of both. Now the only thing I can think of is to order a film I found that contains two of the couple's children, and hope the grandparents are named.   Although, it wouldn't be the first time I've found grandparents omitted!

hi chris nice to meet you im stephanie. my information is gleaned from the following source citations as evidenced.. that was furnished through ancestry.com and through family search. it was entitled Jalisco, Mexico, Civil Registration Deaths, 1856-1987 there it was listed parents as a lucas martin and or a gregoria woman. Lucas Martin
1809–
BIRTH MARCH 1809 • San Francisco De Asis , Jocotepec, Jalisco,Mexico
DEATH UNKNOWN • Mexico also another source of citation was through family search and here is link to it as follows: Mexico, Jalisco, Catholic...Church Records, 1590-1979 Jocotepec San Francisco de Asís Bautismos de hijos legítimos 1854-1857 regarding one of the children .

Stephanie,

was Isabel Martin married in America or Mexico and do you know who she married. Also, Gregoria woman sounds to me like Gregoria is the first name. Also, if this is on a death certificate, I'm not sure I would put a lot of faith in it. it sounds like they really didn't know.

Dear Stephanie,

In order to help you, I would need to know how to access the documents that you do have on Isabel Martin to look for clues on how to proceed. How do you know her father is Lucas Martin? How do I see that record to look for more clues for identifying her parents and grandparents? Unfortunately, Without this information I wouldn't be able to help you.

Good Luck,

R.A. Ricci

PS does Isabel have any siblings? What information do you have on Isabel and her husband?

Comment

Dear Stephanie,

I need more information in order to help you. Where did you get the information that Isabel's parents are Lucas Martin and a woman surnamed Gregoria? I would start by reviewing every word in the record that gave you this information looking for clues.

I took a look at the indexed/extracted records for Isabel Martin, and her family. With the limited info in this post I was unable to find any information on them.

I then thought of looking at the info in your file to see if info there would lead to them. I started with Cresencio Martinez and Felicitas Coronado. I found some errors and omissions in your data, as well as some inconsistencies.

I was using Ancestry.com (Library edition).

I found six children for Francisco Coronado and Emilia Sanchez. Felicitas Coronado was not born 19 Oct 1896, but instead 18 May 1898, in Villa de Cos, Zacatecas. Her brother Francisco was born 19 Oct 1896, Villa de Cos. The Villa de Cos civil records are indexed at Ancestry.com so these are easy to find.

I could not duplicate your info on Cresencio Martinez's birth. I found a Cresencio Martinez born 19 Apr 1893, in Teoquitlan de Corona, Jalisco, son of Jose Maria Martinez and Maria Valenda (not Veleida). This record is in the volume for 1893, image 66

hi george thank you so much for responding to me . yes my great grandmother was known to my family as felix as it was a family nickname for her. as for my great grandfather his birthdates etc were gleaned from social security records, ancestry.com my personal families records from lyons, ks genealogical society etc. i had a question about silveria person in a record that was found on ancestry.com i only found name and hasnt found anything more about her since then. however i did notice that many of my families records through family search are very vague. there is mestizo and or india posted in some of them and then it trails off.

Comment

Stephanie

You're welcome!

Your family info about "Felix" is important, and gives some evidence that the marriage of Cresencio to "Maria Felix Coronado" is probably the right one.

Jose Marie Martinez is a pretty common name, so that by itself is not very helpful. The town in that Cresencio Martinez birth record actually is Teocuitatlan de Corona (by the way, in my earlier post I misspelled the name of the town) and is a long way from Villa de Cos, as well as a significant distance from Guadalajara. To have some certainty that he is the right one we need something in Villa de Cos that ties him to that town. I was only able to find one child of Cresencio in Villa de Cos. I found the 1940 census for Rice County, KS, for the family of Crcencio and Felicitas Martinez - all the children are born in Kansas. The child born in Mexico in 1915 is not there. He may have died early, as child deaths are pretty common, which may explain his absence.

The 1914 marriage record for Cresencio and Maria

yes all children of crescencio martinez who were my great grandparents were born in kansas. one of them was my grandpa john coronado martinez. however i do believe the 2 oldest children by names of antonio and or juaquina were born in mexico. antonio the boy you were referring too unfortunately was kidnapped in lyons , kansas while playing in yard. the boy was never found however family of mine says he was taken to mexico . i can contact lyons ks genealogical society to see if death certificate is available on crescencio far as i know he said he was from guadalara jalisco mexico from newspaper clipping of obituary etc.. they died 4 yrs before i was even born. as for lucas martin and or isabel martin or martinez was married to a sebastian veleida or velenda . she was born roughly about 1825 from mexico . on page 6 of record: jalisco, Mexico, Civil Registration Deaths, 1856-1987 i found through ancestry.com lists a child by name of Maria Francisca Veleida. parents of isabel was a lucas

Dear Katherine,

You are right about it being Delgadillo and not Rodriguez. I looked at the notes I made and the surname is Delgadillo. I went back and edited the tree and replaced Rodriguez with Delgadillo.

R.A. Ricci,

Oh wow! I also just sent you a message from the site profile contact page a few day ago. (I guess it also didn't go through.) It had to with the Velasquez line that you are a part of and you have written 2 different snippets in a couple of different forum posts a few years back.

Although I'm just getting around to asking about the family, I found out a few months ago that I am a descendant of Blas Velasquez and Micaela Mendoza through their son Joseph. Joseph moved and married in Ocotlan, Jal. in 1727 and a lot of his descendants seem to have stayed in that region for many generations. I was stuck on one generation under Joseph with his daughter Josepha Velsaquez, my 7x greatgrandmother, for a few years. I finally came across the really faded Marriage Informational for her in a disorganized collection of other Marriage Informational jumping back and forth between 1755-1757 in La Barca. (Marriage records for La Barca during the 1730s-1770s didn't give the couple's parents

Dear Paul,

Blas Velasquez Hernandez (1662) is the son of Francisco Velasquez (b1623) and Catalina Hernandez (b1629).

Catalina Hernandez is the natural daughter of Domingo Hernandez Gamino (b1595, d. 13/Oct1687)

Domingo Hernandez Gamino is the son of Juan Hernandez Gamino ( b. Abt 1570 m. Bet 1590&1594, d. Bet 3/Apr/1633. & 13/Jun/1633

Domingo was born in Villa de Guadalupe, Trujillo, Caceres, Extremadura, España.

Many public libraries, as well as all the LDS family history centers, have access to the institutional version of Ancestry.com. You can use these to get the info you need - both of these sites will allow you to down the images of the records you find.

I am planning to go to the library tomorrow, and will look for you.

Welcome, Vanessa!

I don't know how much you know about how to use familysearch, but it is a fantastic resource.

Doing a quick search of it with the info you gave us, I believe I found your grandfather in the 1930 US Federal Census.

https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenn…~

That image gives us your grandfather, great-grandfather and great-grandmother's ages. It is important to always use real documents and to write down when and where you got your information. We call it "documenting your sources." Otherwise nothing is certain. Starting with an approximate year they were each born should allow you to search the images of familysearch for their baptisms or civil registration.

Below is the link to the image-by-image register of the baptisms in Degollado in the time

Yes, thank you. I appreciate your help. However, I should have been a little more clearer. I wasn't looking for those individuals specifically, just wished to learn more about my family in general as the line goes higher. Familysearch is my best friend. :) As for my grandfather's Salcedo line, I have tracked up to my sixth great-grandfather whose name was Joaquin Salcedo who was born abt 1751 near Atotonilco El Alto. Approximately in Atotonilco El Alto he married Maria Segunda Barajas who was born in Jun 1751 in Atotonilco El Alto. Her parents were Agustin Barajas and Petrona De La Cruz. Her baptism record has her listed as a 'coyote'. They (Joaquin and Maria Segunda) had six children that I am aware of. That's as far as I am able to go with that line. As for my maternal line, I have the names of all 62 of my 5th great-grandparents. However, I have no stories or know much about them.

I should have worded my intro a little better but I really do appreciate the help. Is there anywhere

Trying to find the parents of Petronila de Retamosa Macias Valades Gonzalez de Gardea

I have been trying to figure out who the parents of Petronila de Retamosa Macias Valades Gonzalez de Gardea are and still have no real clue.

Comments

Comment

What is the baptism date for Petronila’s grandson Joseph who she was also a madrina for?

Comment

Hi Danny,

The parents of Joseph are Sebastián de Ulloa and Juana González de Gardea, listed here as Juana González Lozano. The godparents were Onofre Lozano and Petrona González de Gardea.

Chris

Comment

I think that our Petronila likely comes from the household of Hernando Martel and Beatriz Macias Valades Retamosa Villegas. The origin of the padrinos and testigos of her children, Petronila’s peculiar use of surnames, and the intermarriage of some of her children all seem hover around this couple.

Identifying Padrinos and Testigos:

I believe I have all of the Gonzalez and Macias Padrinos and Testigos of our Petronila’s children identified accept for Joseph Macias Valadez.

I think that Beatriz Gonzalez (padrina to Juan Lozano) and Phelipe Gonzalez (testigo to Juan Antonio Lozano) are siblings. Only I think they are both the children of Juan Gonzalez and Francisca del Castillo, not Luis Gonzalez and Catalina de Quiroga, but they are still both grandchildren of Luis Gonzalez and Beatriz Gallegos.

I think Miguel Martel (testigo of Manuel Lozano) is the same as stated earlier by Chris.

I think that Pedro Macias Valadez (testigo to Eugenio Lozano and Juana Lozano) is the same Pedro

Comment

I think some people used their step-parents name. My ancestor Bartolome Josephe Martel who is married to Juana Manuela Lozano de Gardea is the grandson of the Miguel Martel you mentioned as Testigo to Manuel Lozano. Bartolome Josephe Martel's parents are Catalina Anguino y velasco and Miguel Martel but Catalina Anguino y Velasco was also married to Nicolas Ponce and Bartolome Josephe Martel was also known as Bartholome Josephe Ponce and my ancestors all took the Ponce last name from his step-father and not Martel

Danny C. Alonso

Comment

Hi Danny,

I am not aware of any of my ancestors using a step-parent's name. I suppose it's possible, but, I haven't seen it. But, I don't think Bartolome Joseph Ponce used his step-father's name. First, Doña Catalina Velasco de Anguiano was widowed from Nicolas Ponce, when she married Miguel Martel. So, Bartolome Joseph Ponce wouldn't have been alive when Nicolas Ponce was alive, so, it doesn't seem like it would make sense that he would use an apellido of someone he not only never knew, but also wasn't his father. I believe Doña Catalina Velasco de Anguiano was also Doña Catalina Ponce and Bartolome Joseph Ponce was actually using his mother's apellido. Here on the baptism of a daughter of hers and Miguel Martel, she is listed as Doña Catalina Ponce:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-64V7-WL4

Chris

Comment

Chris,

How do you know for sure that Catalina Ponce and Catalina Velasco de Anguino are the same person. couldn't there be more than one person named Migel Martel. also do you think then that joseph lozano de gardea is not using his step mother's name?

Danny C. Alonso

Comment

Hi Danny,

Maria Efigenia Martel, the daughter that Miguel Martel and Catalina Ponce were baptizing in 1699 is the same daughter that's listed on her defuncion as the daughter of Miguel Martel and Catalina de Anguiano here:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-XK5W-VH3

Regarding, Joseph Lozano de Gardea, no, I personally do not believe he would use Gardea if he was not in someway related to that family.

Chris

Comment

Hi David,

I think you're on the right track with some of these testigos. Many are interrelated. Beatriz González, madrina to Juan Lozano, I believe is the daughter of Luis González and Catalina de Quiroga and the granddaughter of Luis González and Beatriz Gallegos, that would also explain the Martel connection as Beatriz Gallegos is a probable daughter of Captain Hernando Martel, founder of Santa Maria de los Lagos.

Felipe González, testigo to Juan Antonio Lozano, is the brother to the above Beatriz González, and also grandson of the same Luis González and Beatriz Gallegos.

Miguel Martel, testigo to Manuel Lozano's marriage is the brother to the above named Francisco Martel. He's the son of Hernando Martel and Beatriz de Retamosa, aka Beatriz Macías Valadez, aka Beatriz de Villegas. He's also grandson of the same Luis González and Beatriz Gallegos.

Chris

Comment

Hi Chris,

If Petronila was a descendant of Hernando Martel and Beatríz Macías Valadéz that would explain the Retamosa, but that doesn't explain the González de Gardea.

Paige

Comment

Hi Paige,

I agree. Plus, I think the Gardea part of the name was the most important to them, since that's what they chose to pass on. Not once among their descendants have I seen Macías or Retamosa, but, numerous descendants used some variation of González de Gardea, Lozano de Gardea, etc.

I can't recall more than once that I've seen Petronila de Retamosa as madrina. I do know she was madrina to her grandson Joseph, along with Onofre Lozano, the son of Cristobal Lozano and Mariana González de Gardea, and, half brother to her husband. But, that's about the only time I know of where she was madrina.

Isabel Mendoza

I do not know if this Isabel Mendoza that we have been looking for all these years but she does have many, if not all, of the puzzle pieces that we have been using as clues.

After discovering that I had found an "Isabel Mendoza" in the right time frame and matching many of the clues that genealogists have had in their search for the spouse of Toribio Hernandez, I searched through my decades of research for answers as to why I had not found her before, and for additional clues that I have to confirm or disprove that she is the actual Isabel Mendoza that I have been looking for.

I stated that the prime reason for not finding her previously was that she was said to be related to the Viceroy and that we genealogists had assumed that she was related to the first Viceroy because he was surnamed Mendoza instead of looking at her possible relationship to the second Viceroy. After looking at my research notes for many decades of research I find that I had looked at the possibility of our "Isabel Mendoza" being related to the second Viceroy instead of the first. The previous research into the second viceroys family member named Isabel had come up with the

Comment

Toribio Hernandez Arellano and Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza had two daughters named Isabel. I found this unusual. But in real life I have also encountered families with two siblings with the same name. I have also found it in a few other cases in my ancestral tree but they either had same first name and different middle name or different first names and same middle names. But the case of Toribio and Isabel's daughter s the two of them used different surnames I never understood why anyone would name two of their children with the same name. Until now that is.

For Toribio Hernandez Arrellano the name Isabel was very important as his father passed away when he was young and he was raised by a single mom. Naming a daughter after her would have been very important to him.

For Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza, the half sister if the Viceroy, the name Isabel had maybe even more significance. Isabel is the Spanish equivalent of Elizabeth. Edward III and Elizabeth of Suffolk named their

Comment

Isabel Mendoza is a second cousin to Mariana Mendoza who is the mother-in-law of Balthazar Temino de Banuelos. Mariana Mendoza's father, Luis Marin is closer in age to Isabel's half brother the Viceroy. Luis Marin is identified as a close friend of her half brother, the Viceroy. Luis Marin is said to be a musician and the life of the party.

Comment

If this Isabel Mendoza is the Isabel Mendoza married to Toribio Hernandez Arellano, we can look to a mistake made by myself and many other genealogists for not finding her sooner. When we read that she was related the the Viceroy we assumed that it was the first Viceroy Mendoza instead of the second Viceroy Velasco. Though she is related to the first Viceroy, it is not a close relationship like the second Viceroy.

I shouldn't be speaking for other genealogists, but I was guilty of looking only at the first Viceroy's closest relatives for a relationship to an Isabel Mendoza.

Martin Casillas was also said to be related to the Viceroy. I have only looked at the first Viceroy for clues to his ancestry, It's time to look at the second Viceroys family for clues to Martin Casillas "el Alarife"'s ancestry. Anyone looking for Martin Casillas connection should remember that the name of Martin Casillas's father is Pedro Casillas.

Thanks Manny I did see the R the same as the surname but it still didn't make sense to me. I don't recall having seen Rutiaga before. I was able to add the correct surname and change the Aviles to Robledo and bonanza, I found 11 children.

It seems part of my paternal side is from Villa de Reyes (although, some were from Bledos that at one point was the jurisdiction of Zacatecas. Anyone know if this is short for RoBLEDO). The issue is there are many branches of Robledo so I am mapping out all the different families in search of Juan de Dios Robledo Gutierrez. The issue with this family is that there surnames were switched on many many records so I don't know which name really belongs to which though we all thought and have used Perez. I am stuck on Roman Esparza C. 1830 in Fresnillo, married to Rosalia Gaitan born Sep. 9, 1835 in Pinos, Zac.
I can’t find records for Esparza. I have followed the Gaitan line to a Miguel Gaitan abt. 1706 in Pinos and Antonia Arias Bedolla.

I would also appreciate help with Tomas Moreno 1837 and Maria Agustina Torres Arroyo in Fresnillo.
Tomas’ parents are Felix Moreno and Candida Gomez.
Maria Agustina’s parents are Antonio Arroyo and Maria Torres.

I am also researching Garza, Navarro, Palacios, Sosa, Delgado, Castaneda, Jimenez, Munos, Sanchez to name a few of my ancestors!!

Any help or direction anyone can give would be appreciated.

Thank you!
