Thanks everyone. I have it now. I had been using the map locator, which
doesn't have the Zacatecas Church Records as an option.

They change a couple of days the way of accessing the link for the catholic church records and other collections, they are "hidden" just above the big blue search button: it says "view all 6 collections". I think they are doing that with the collections that are "completed" (whatever that means) and also is not possible any more to attach directly the images to the family tree (although this one happened a while ago)

Over the past few years with 1000 Genomes, citizen scientists, and Geno 2.0
testing new discoveries have been made with Y-DNA especially with  R-M269.

It turns out that a majority of people from Mexico and Spain that are
R-M269 are positive for an SNP marker called P312 and a majority of them
are positive for DF27 and markers below that SNP. Being terminal DF27 is
very rare and most are also positive for a marker below that. A minority of
Mexican and Spanish R-M269 are positive for U106.

You can see the P312 and the DF27 trees in the following links -

Hello Alice,

FTDNA is finally showing all of the SNPs that your brother tested positive
for with the Geno 2.0 test. It's about time they updated that information.
Hopefully they update everyone's account with their terminal SNP where the
shorthand SNP is mentioned. They also need to update the longhand
haplogroup such as your R1b1a2a1a1b5 which no longer exists. R-L176.2 is
now R1b1a2a1a2a1b according to ISOGG . They need to either update or
abandon longhand altogether.

Yo soy R-M269+ y U106-

My youngest son Robert Jauregui did test with FTDNA with the results of R1b1a2 R-M269 / A, his grandparents live in Teocaltiche, Jalisco Mexico.

My maternal Grandfather's Manuel Miranda line had the same results of R1b1a2 R-M269 / A, his mother, grandfather were from Magdalena, Sonora. (At the request of a distant cousin I upgraded FTDNA to include FamilyFinder for my Grandfather only at this time waiting for results).

My father Richard Rodriguez also tested with FTDNA with results of I2b1 I-M223 / A. I can only trace my Great Grandfather Jaime Rodriguez b. 1862 back to Dallas, Texas and Coahuilla. We are testing my fathers maternal grandfather line (waiting for results) Jose Aguilar from Jimenez Chihuahua.

I would like to upload DNA information into a DNA group thru Nuestro Ranchos,
if we have one. I have joined several groups thru FTDNA.

I also need help on uploading a GED-COM for family tree. I use Ancestry.com and
did not understand how to convert.

Thanks for any help

Hello Judy,

If you have look at the images that are linked in the original post you
will see that M269 is at the very top with 3 SNP markers between M269 and
P312. M269 exists all over Europe and P312 exists all over western Europe.
DF27 exists in other countries in western Europe. However, in Spain the
DF27 marker is exceptionally high for people that belong to the R1b
haplogroup. There is a 70%-80% chance that your son is P312 and DF27 and
very likely positive for an SNP below those. Geno 2.0 tests multiple SNPs
until they run out of SNPs to test for. Once they get to that point and
provide your results they show the last SNP you test positive for. This is
also called the terminal SNP.

Nuestros Ranchos does not have a DNA group. I have not used the gedcom
portion of Nuestros Ranchos. I see Roy has helped you with downloading your
gedcom from Ancestry which is all I would have been able to do. Having your
gedcom on Family Finder will allow your matches to attempt to determine if

I tested positive for I2b1 I-M223 and have been trying to follow people that have the same results.

My last name is Ramirez, however, I discovered a direct paternal great grandfather who was born with the last name Rodriguez but later, as detailed on his marriage record, took on his mothers surname Ramirez. He was a legitimate son who was born with the last name Rodriguez.

I have read books that indicate that it was a common practice to carry on your mothers surname during early colonial times. I'm just not sure that this was practiced in Mexico

Long story short, my Haplogroup matches the English, German and Scandinavian I2b1 I-M223 project participants and so far I seem to be the only individual of Mexican descent who has the I2b1 I-M223 and that is participating on Family Tree DNA Jalisco Project.

Only time will tell how many European settlers brought over this Haplogroup to the Americas.

This is why it is a good idea to not only research your ancestors thru

Comment

Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts. There are some things that need to be clarified though.

Every year the Y-DNA longhand names change. I-M223 is now called I2a2a per the 2014 ISOGG tree http://www.isogg.org/tree/ISOGG_HapgrpI.html

In the Jalisco project kit N112800 is I-CTS616 which is a descendant of I-M223. In the Nueva Galicia DNA project there is another person that is also I-M223. See https://www.familytreedna.com/public/NuevaGaliciaDNA/default.aspx?secti…

So there are actually 3 people from the same region that are I-M223.

You are more than welcome to join the Nueva Galicia DNA project.

It is just a coincidence that you have a surname that comes from a Germanic name. Rodriguez is the 4th most common surname in Spain http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anexo:Apellidos_m%C3%A1s_comunes_en_Espa%C… and it is the 5th most common in Jalisco. Hola Victoriano,

Hi, So since I posted the main post I made several dicoveries, Pedro's full name was Pedro Jose Pascual, he was a mulatto slave and son of a black slave Maria Barbara.

I underwent DNA tests and of those my Y-DNA test came back as I2a. From what i understand my DNA is an exact match to all of the Martin del Campo descendants, therefore Pedro's father was a Martin del Campo, there are some speculations as to who his father was, but they are mere speculations, sadly we will never know.

Pedro and his mother Maria Barbara took/adopted the last name of "Romo" as their legal owner was Esteban Manuel Romo de Vivar y Lomelín.

Time, DNA, further research, and the help of many people helped me with my very own question.

Thank you all.

Family Tree from familysearch.com

I just found out the hard way that anyone can change, delete, merge and add people to the free version of Family Tree from familysearch.

Comment

There is a users guide/manual for Family Tree at http://broadcast.lds.org/elearning/fhd/community/en/familysearch/family… (October 2013).

Starting at page 72 there are details on how to restore a deleted individual, and from page 73 information on seeing what changes have been made and how to undo them.

If someone sees something questionable in a record, rather than just changing the data, they could start a "discussion" in the system, and if that person is being watched, an e-mail notification will be sent.

If a change is just made, the submitter of the information can also be contacted if they have a valid e-mail address in the system.

I started using it since their beta launch about two years ago I think, I also decide to stop and now I am painfully copying most of the information on my own database, is not just that tree merges can heavily damage the relationships but the fact they decide not to implement a "export" feature after all is quite disappointing. The "one tree" is a nice Idea but also a really complicated one and I think the stuff they have available to program their site are not sufficient, (in numbers), they are actually trying to "bite more than they can actually chew" For the last 10 months I've seen that most of the complains are based on this very same issues and they make very clear that their goal is different from fixing it which is what most users are expecting, sad to say, but I don't think the FamilyTree idea is going far.

Who knows may be in the future with new or better management they can actually bring a good database site, right now the integration with the digital records is

Help with deciphering an Ejutla record

Hi everyone,

I've been trying to figure a few things on a marriage record on my own to no avail.
The record is #173. Here is the link. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18567-2737-28

Erika--

I'll try to answer what I can.

1. The abbreviation is defa, which is short for difunta, which means she is deceased. The scribes will also note when the person still lives.

2. You're correct as to the bride's mother's name. I don't think Florencia is a last name, but I believe she is someone with no last name. The bride's last name is Santana (also noted on the side of the record, along with her father's name). Right after the bride's name in the record (Maria Estefana Santana) is the word coiota, which is one of the racial designations used in colonial Mexican times. Since that suggests an indigenous ancestry, it would make sense that last names may be missing (since many indios really didn't use last names at this time).

3. I can't really help you with this, since my area of familiarity is elsewhere, but I will refer you to the Diccionario Geográfico, Histórico y Biográfico de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos by Antonio García Cubas. He lists a solid collection of place names

Comment

Thank you so much! It makes sense that Lorenza may not have had a last name since she was india. I'll check out the link with the collection of places. Looks like a great resources.

By the way, your expert eyes are way better than the Spanish Script site. It's also a great resource, but no substitute for experienced eyes.

I made a mistake earlier with the child's age. The child was 1-2 years old and not 12 years old as I had written in the first post.

Armando

Comment

well why is this child refered to as clovis? and when i put that dna kit number in the one to many, the generation parts shown didn't make sense since this dna is supposedly over 10,000 years old

Comment

Clovis was a culture. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clovis_culture

There were 115 red ochre-covered Clovis artefacts found near the child.

The child's remains are about 12,634 years old. They are from about 10,620 B.C.

No, the generations don't make sense. I never put much weight into the generational calculation though. IBS can throw calculations off. IBS is usually from shared ethnic ancestry since most IBS matches are from the same ethnicity.

1700's and 1800's Adoptive Children

Reading thru church marriage records from the 1700's and 1800's, I find myself wondering who could of adopted children that had no parents.

Comments

Comment

One of my female ancestors was described as a "hija de padres no conocidos" in her marriage record (partida matrimonial), but in her marriage information (información matrimonial) she was described as a "hija natural (según dicen) de..."; both daughter and mother bore the same surname. I do believe that some children of "padres no conocidos" were, in fact, natural children who deliberately concealed the identities of their parents.

V.Q.C.

Comment

i don't really know. i wonder if in some case of hijo(o/a) adoptiv(o/a) the child didn't know who their actual parents were(i think that's the case for some who are labeled as padres no conocido also, but padres no conocidos can also refer to 'natural' children.)

also last names weren't always passed down in a consistant manner. for example, on person on my tree didn't get either parent's last name, and instead got his last name derived from the place he grew up at.

Comment

Based on what I've seen on numerous records I can assume that adoption wasn't based on any set of rules per say,(although they exist) and thus the situations behind each case would vary. Closer relatives would be more likely to take kids as their own, now taking a kid didn't mean they were always considered adopted, I think the adoption was "official" when there was some inheritance at stake, but definitely not a rule either.

Taking on a specific surname is not uncommon, even by biological sons/daughters specially among big Spanish families we see often kids making their own "set" of last names, now in your ancestor's case it seems like he could be in fact his adoptive mother relative and thus he used her last name but again, this is not a rule and could easily be that he just was too close to her.

Official adoption is usually not seen too often, but once we read many records we can see that there were many families that "house in" relatives at the point they were considered part of

I am confined to only the internet, don't really know much about other sources, thus FamilySearch is mostly my only source, but I have used PARES and the Biblioteca Publica del estado de Jalisco also has an index for many civil records, some date back before Mexico's Independence. Amaya Topete's works are also a good source (if you can consult any of them), and many other are also cited here in this page.

Adopted or hijos de padres no conocidos or hijo natural are terms that I, like most genealogists, hate to find in my research for it often leads to a dead end in the family tree. Though I still don't like finding these terms, they are not always dead ends and more research sometimes reveals the parents names. I had a few, what I had thought to be, dead ends that ended up being just a bump in the road and I was able to eventually find out the identity of at least one of the parents. This is where it pays off to research siblings and their descendants hoping that their records bring light to what is often hidden on purpose.

I have found this data in all sorts of records so look at all the ones you can find. A siblings marriage certificate revealed the father in one case. Both siblings had originally listed as padre desconocido but subsequent records revealed the father of the sibling. Another record revealed that they had the same father. The baptismal records of two siblings

Mickey,
Since the previous method was so simple, do you know what the reason or logic was for the change?  Legal, copyright, etc.?  It certainly wasn't to make it user friendly.
Thanks again,   Alice

Alice,

You have to save the whole image (meaning both pages of the book in the image) then use the "crop" function on the print function in your computer. It used to be so easy, now it takes more steps.

Hi Emilie,
I'm afraid I'm going to have to have someone more computer savvy look into this.  At this time, when I try to print the whole image, I wind up with 3 pages.  One page has site text and the other two print only the upper half of each page.  One image number provides viewing of both pages of the church book.  Do I have to zoom out each page to fill the screen, first before printing?   Thanks so much,  Alice

Hi Alice,

No don't try to print the whole image. What I meant was that when you are looking at the image that has the entry you want to print, right click on the image and save it as a .jpg file. It will save both pages of the book on the image. Then go into your computer where your saved photos end up, open the saved photo and use the printing application on your computer. They all have a "crop" option. You open the photo and use the menu at the top to get to the options to crop the photo to the section of the image you want.

I wasn't able to use the "paint" function of my Windows Picture Viewer, but the Microsoft Office Picture Manager has a crop function that is easy for me to use---when I open the photo, at the top is a menu and I click on "picture", and it brings up a drop down menu and one of the choices is 'crop'. I click on that and then it shows the whole image with brackets on every corner. Move the brackets to enclose the entry you want to print, then click on

Thanks for the help, but I don't have Microsoft Office.  I'll keep trying something else.  Thanks again.   Alice

Thank You Rosalva,

If you come across any mention of the European origins of the Duran and Aguayo Familes that settled in Nochistlan in early 1600's that would be great.

I am specifically interested in Juan Simon Duran born around 1604 and his wife Regina de Aguayo born around 1607. All their children were born in Nochistlan in the early 1600's.

I alson noticed you have Duran in your user name, I wonder if we are related.

Thank You

Hi Ruben,

We might just be related! I am searching for my Duran family roots as we speak! Being fairly new to this, I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Currently, I've hit a road block. I'm looking for a marriage record for Jose Florencio Duran and Maria Marselina Rodriguez, my 4x great grand parents. I've found a birth record for one of their children but no marriage record. They are listed as the paternal grand parents on some of their son's, Jose Atilano Duran Rodriguez (born 1782 in Tlachichila, spouse: Maria Juana Marques) children's baptism records.

Any names sound familiar?

Regards,

Rosalva

I found a marriage record for a Joseph Florensio Duran and Maria Magdalena Rodriguez. You can look at the link, record on bottom of page. This may be same record you are looking for. It does not mention Florensio's parents so I could not make a match to my tree. I will keep looking.

On rootsweb.com under family trees my database is rojasdelgado. You can see more Duran members there from my tree.

I also sent you a link of other names you mentioned.
Good Luck

Alicia Avelar Olmos de Carrillo
According to Clotilde Evelia Quirarte on page 110, referring to the colonial period in Nochistlan, there were 12 founding families with the surnames of Sandoval, Ruvalcaba, Ruiz, Frias, Mejia, Duran and Chavez, these are just some of the 12 families and this would be according to the author, Arrequi in the book he wrote sometime around 1619. He states that Juchipila, Jalpa and Mexticacan were primarily indian communities with 4-6 Spanish families in each of the towns and he highlights that during that same time, Nochistlan had about 12 founding Spanish families.

The parish archives begin in 1622 with the visit of Fray Francisco de Rivera. It's not until 1627 that several Spanish surnames can be found in the archives of the baptismal records such as Don Gaspar de Casareal y Ulloa, Juan de Sandoval, Juan Pèrez Delgadillo, Juan de Chàvez, Juan de Carvajal, Juan Rodriguez, Carvajal, Juan Iñiguez, Domingo Lomeli and Carlos de Lomeli.

Comment

Alicia Avelar Olmos de Carrillo
Some of the first baptismal records from Nochistlan have the following surnames, Ximenez, Guzman, Fernàndez, Ledesma, Juan y Alejandro Duràn, Ana Ruiz, Ana Duràn, Ana de Aguayo, Julio de Irungaray, Julio y Lorenzo Yañez, Matheo de Rovalcava, Gertrudis de Amaràs. Also the surnames of Mendoza, Martinez, Garcia, de Torres, Pèrez de la Mora, Mexia, Ramirez, Lozano, de Vargas and Muñoz. Beginning in 1660 we found Luis Lemos Benavides, Antonio de Legaspi, Josè de Orozco and Tomasa de Nungaray. In 1672 we see the death of Juan Rodriguez de Frias who died at the age of 80 and soon thereafter, the death of Juan Duràn who was more than 80 years old, he was the owner of an "Hacienda"
I hope this helps some of you with ancestors from Nochistlan.

Hi there Rosalva, thanks for offering this opportunity, that is a book I always wanted to see but have no copies close to where I live. I wonder if there is and index within the book that can tell us the contents (then I would either keep pursuing it or just leave it along) I'm mostly interested in the "Rodriguez de Santa Ana" "Lozano" and "Quirarte (Quiralta or Quiralte)", I am pretty sure the Lozanos are going to be there but I don't know about the other two surnames. Thanks for any info you may find, and enjoy it for us :D

Hi Rosalva,

If you find any mention of the Ariza y Medina family that would be awesome!

With the help of others here on Nuestros Ranchos we have traced the origin of the family to early 1600s Zacatecas with the patriarchs being Fernando de Araiza and María de Guzmán, parents of Juan de Araiza y Medina I, whose will we found in Aguascalientes.

El genearca de los Araiza del sur de Jalisco fue de Zacatecas, llamado Fernando de Araiza casado con María de Guzmán.

You are better off downloading the image and then using image software to crop and print what you need; you should also be able to optimize the image (adjust brightness and contrast, for example). The downloaded image will have greater resolution.
