In going through the Asientos 1751/61 volume (which actually has 1757/1767), I found:

30 Mar 1761
Joseph Antonio de Villalpando, Espanol, from Asientos, h. l. Eusebio de Villalpando and Nicolasa Francisca Lopez, and widower of Juana de Dios Esparza, married Dona Juana Maria Francisca del Mercado, Espanola, from Zacatecas, h. l. Don Juan de Dios Mercado and Dona Barbara Castorena.

This is image 99.

There are a few other Villalpando marriages in this volume as well.

Thank you for this; I'll post the details of the other Villalpando's I found later today.

However, very briefly, in the 1751/61 volume they are on images 7-8, 32-33, 74, 81-2, 89, 92, 99, 118 (the mother of the groom is Anna de Villalpando), 159, 163, 192, and 199. The handwriting in this volume is very clear, and the names are all in the margins.

I am going to review the 1754/57 volume this evening.

Hi George

I came across this Joseph Antonio Villalpando as a 4th testigo in a marriage investigation, where he is identified as mestizo, vecino and originario of Asientos, age 26, single, and the son of Eusebio Villalpando and Nicolasa Francisca Lopez. This is the first time i see a Villalpando as something other than Spanish.

Here is the citation and link:

George Fulton,

Reading your note just reminded me that there is a film for Asientos baptisms in the Pinos, Zacatecas records. The very first baptism film under Pinos covers 5 abril 1765 [image 3] to 29 agosto 1778 [image 156]. Perhaps you are already aware of this?

It does appear that María Dionisia de Pedroza listed as the mother of José Miguel de Pedroza is the same María Dionisia de Pedroza that married Nicolás Díaz Tiscareño; although it's unusual that the IM for José Miguel and María Magdalena Muñoz de Nava does not state the relationship between "testigo" Francisco Javier de Pedroza and the groom to-be, his supposed nephew. Typically the relationship between a witness and the couple is disclosed and a statement is made by the witness that the relationship did not influence the witness' testimony.

I don't believe that Nicolás Díaz Tiscareño is the father of José Miguel. I'm thinking that the illicit relationship between Nicolás and María Dionisia de Pedroza probably only occurred just prior to their marriage; since, the second witness in their 'dispensa', don Pedro Montero y Aragón had no knowledge of the affair. A long standing relationship would have been scandalous and a hot topic of small town gossip. Also, if Nicolás was the father

Comentario

Hi Austin,

I hadn't noticed that Jose Miguel de Pedroza and Magdalena Munoz would've needed a dispensa. This does appear to eliminate Nicolas Diaz Tiscareno as the potential father. Excellent point.

Simona,

this was really good information. maybe you could look at one of my Pedroza dead ends to see if you see something i'm not seeing. i have been trying to find the parents for doña Micaela de Pedroza for the last few years. She's here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/De_Pedroza-95

She has parents identified on her defuncion named doña Theresa de Pedroza and don Antonio de Acosta. But, I'm not sure that's accurate, since her marriage and IM and dowry just list her as the hija natural of doña Theresa de Pedroza. Although, on her dowry, doña Micaela de Pedroza is listed as doña Micaela de Acosta y Pedroza, so the parents may be correct, although, I cant find where they fit into the rest of the Pedroza's and Acosta's. Nor can i find any information on them. plus, she's listed as an hija de padres no conocido or hija natural, except on the defuncion where she's listed as hija legitima, which doesnt seem right.

And, going all the way back to her baptism, she's listed just as an hija

Simona,

Thank you so much. I really appreciate you taking a look. I've been stuck on them for some time now. And because the baptism, marriage and death records say something different I'm not sure which to believe although Micaela de Pedroza y Acosta's death record is the most recent, so may be that's the most accurate but still not sure. It's possible none of the records are right. Plus, she's definitely a descendant of Santiago de Pedroza and Juana de Acosta so it's possible she just uses the name Pedroza y Acosta for them and not for her parents.

Hi Simona,
I’ve looked at this family before and if the defunción is correct and the parents are don Francisco de Acosta and doña Teresa de Pedroza then the only parents that make sense to me are don Francisco de Acosta that was married to Nicolasa Fernández de Palos and doña Teresa de Pedroza that was married Isidro Fernández de Palos, both would’ve been  available at the time. don Francisco de Acosta would’ve been widowed at the time and doña Teresa de Pedroza wouldn’t have been married yet, but it seems odd that someone who just had an illegitimate child would marry so soon after without it causing a scandal.

Yes, some of the information does not make sense. Sorry I did not respond earlier, I had internet conx issues hopefully it has been fixed and I can continue with adding more to the picture of events and see if we can make sense of it. Today in looking at the pedrozas and macias I found a Macias tree so that kept me pretty busy deciphering.

I spent the weekend reading through a lot of IM's and it has struck me how often someones admits to illicit amistad, sometimes for several months but at least once for a number of years. The first time i saw the phrase I thought how bad it must have been for them, especially the girl/woman, her reputation ruined, but after the 10th time I am no longer surprised.

Excellent work Simona,

I have the Pedrosas in my family tree. The information that Nicolas had a long standing relationship also leads me to believe that he is a possible father to Jose Miguel Pedrosa. Even better was finding the indisputable evidence showing his mother and her story.

I agree that there may have been friction from family members if Jose Miguel used the Diaz Tiscareño surname since the mom and Dionicia were closely related. But it would be great to learn more about how the family handled the situation and to find out if Miguel or any of his descendants ever used Diaz Tiscareño as a surname. Did Nicolas Diaz Tiscareño and Maria Dionicia Pedroza have children once they were married? She would have still been of child bearing age.

It would be great to find a will of Nicolas Diaz Tiscareño and see if what additional information it could provide.

Keep up the good work!

Danny, Christopher, and Rick, Thanks for kind words. I am only to happy to post information that would help many as the Pedrozas/Anda, Alba, etc had many children.
You're right Christopher it is only a possiblity that Nicolas is the father. Because these families married extensively among themselves there must be many dispensas (lots of researching to do). The information does narrow the field to these families to see if there is any mention of the father of Joseph Miguel Pedroza. I will start to look at my cousins great Grandfather.

Thank you the kind words.

This project was done over a period of a couple of years. During that time Family Search reposted the films, and consequently the image numbers changed. This reduced the utility, but as Chris noted there is still a way to find the actual records.

I have looked at revisting the index with revised image numbers, but I have been working on a number of other projects, and have not gotten back to it.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

George

Comentario

I'm not sure how I am supposed to use the index but here's how I do it.

1. Open a film on FS.
2. Go to a random IM on the film.
3. Check the index and see if its in Vol 1709
4. Repeat until I land on one in Vol 1709.
5. Note image number in index.
6. Note image number of my wanted IM in index.
7. Find difference between image numbers in index.
8. Either add or subtract that many image numbers in FS.
9. You should find the one you are looking for!

Comentario

I think FS changes how films are grouped sometimes. Its evident by this index, Katy's indexes and Claudia's. It stinks that they do that. But regardless the index's provide extremely good starting points to find the documents. Thank you for all of your work guys!

Thanks Chris!

The link works fine!

I knew it very likely would not be the Antonio I was looking for, but I hated the thought of leaving a stone unturned...

Very lucky for me, the right Antonio Villalpando (married to Maria Chaire) turned up in a document listing the descendants of Thomas Villalpando, made by George Fulton and saved in a file folder here in NR, with all the proper citations so I can go to an image of the original.

The lesson I learned here is not to panic if the image number is wrong. I was not aware that FS had changed them, or at least some of them, but now I know better!

Did you use Alex (245luigi) method?

Great find, Alex. You and I have actually seen this a few years back, though, in a transcribed form (and I think you found it then, too!): https://books.openedition.org/cemca/1597

Only a portion is viewable at that link, so this is cool, to have the complete record. It’s from Oct 1616 - around the same time as that document I had found re: Mariana Ortiz, and features several of the same players - including her husband, Alonso Gomez Garay. We also get approximate ages of those who give testimony: Alonso Gomez Garay 40/1576, Luis de Benavides 60/1556, Juan Iniguez 40/1576.

I think this Luis de Benavides is the one married to Maria de Jorge, parents of Juan de Benavides cc Maria de Avila, whose testamento you found. I tentatively have him as son of Luis de Benavides cc Andrea Cortes, who appeared in that inquisicion document I had posted.

Image 129 has Carlos Lomelini named “escribano nombrado” by Andres de Venegas. Juan de Hijar was alcalde mayor, before Andres de Venegas.

Me pasó hace unos tres o cuatro años.

Hi Daniel

You mention Juan de Santiago y Escobar y Gertrudis Navarro de Nava in your post. Where did they live?

I found a Juan de Santiago and Gertrudis de los Angeles as parents of Maria de los Dolores de Santiago, wife of Manuel Villalpando and mother of Antonia Rosalia of Villalpando. Manuel lived in Asientos in the mid 1700s and Antonia was born there in 1732.

Hi Danny

Thanks for your input! The timeline works out, Juan and Gertrudis marry in 1706 and Manuel Villalpando and Maria Dolores de Santiago marry in 1730. But I will have get written records with the same names to be more certain. There were Santiagos in Asientos who were not Spanish, including one named Juan (but his wife's name was completely different). So its rather confusing. If you have the link to the image of the marriage in 1706, could you please post it?

Danny, thank you.

I have looked extensively at the Vallejo family of Jalostotitlan, and cannot unambigously place Maria Josefa.

There are, perhaps, three families. One is consistently "Espanol," the others are indio or mestizo. Maria Josefa is espanola, so she cannot be ot her the other two, but there are a number of espanol Vallejo men who could be her father, but identifying the right one eludes me.
I have looked through the indexes of the Guadalajara dispensas, and there are very few Vallejo's there.

Baptism records

I am in the process of researching baptism records on Ancestry from the Asuncion de Maria Catholic church in Aguascalientes.

The baptism records will include the name of the child, its parents, and its padrinos or godparents; after 1800, grandparents' names are included in most parishes. Previous to 1821 (independence), the "casta" or ethnicity of the child & parents are also included.

The signature on the bottom right of each entry is usually that of the cleric who performed to baptism, or of the "Notario Publico" ("Notary Public"), or of the "Notario Nombrado" ("interim notary"). In this case, it is of Bachiller Francisco Narvaez, who was given permission by the parish priest, Doctor Don Vicente Antonio Flores Alatorre, to baptize the children. His signature appears on the bottom left of each entry.

Comentario

Thanks so much Manny! I find that the term "bachiller" generally translates as a person with a degree of "bachelor", but it can also have the honorific title of "secular priest". I assume that this is the meaning used in the baptism record. Does this title also imply that Senor Narvaez may have been some sort of minor governmental official? Also, do you happen to have any historical or genealogical information regarding Senor Narvaez? Thanks again.
