Katy, excellent work, I did not Know that Nicolas was the owner of the Hacienda Santa Rosa de Viterbo and he was Captain too. This Capellania was for help his grandson. He was studying at the Seminary of Guadalajara and was son of Antonio de Escobedo y Valenzuela and Rosa Maria or Maria Rosa Sanchez-Castellanos Bañuelos owners of the Hacienda of Santa Teresa both in Monte Escobedo.
This Nicolas was the son of Juan Sanchez-Castellanos and Thomasina de Haro y Saucedo, here you can find the sons and daughters of Nicolas, the value of his properties. This was a hit for genealogy.

The title of Captain I understand was for being landlords because his brothers Lorenzo Sanchez-Castellanos and Joseph Sanchez-Castellanos were captains too in Jerez.

thanks for telling me about who his parents and siblings were. i didn't find that in the document, but i did find about some of his children's names and their spouses in the capellania.i also found out who were the parents and grand parents of teresa ramirez(she was the wife of nicolas's grandson thomas)

Sanchez-Castellanos
Conclusion Captain Nicolas Sanchez Castellanos and his wife Maria de Bañuelos fonded the Capellania of Santa Rosa de Viterio in the land knowed in 1754 Hacienda of Santa Rosa and the Puesto (Ranch)of La Maza. Their son Florencio Sanchez Castellanos was born ab 1674, Vicente Sanchez Castellanos ab 1679, Sebastian ab 1681 so I can now afim that Nicolas Sanchez Castellanos de Haro was the son of Juan Sanchez Castellanos (widow of Jerez) and Thomasina de Haro y Saucedo(Tlaltenango).

There was another Nicolas Sanchez-Castellanos de Viera(born in 1668 in Tlaltenango) son of Joseph Sanchez Castellanos and Francisca de Viera married in Tlaltenango, Francisca died very soon and Joseph got married in Jerez with ???? Chavez y Bañuelos and lived in Tlalticualoya (today Los Cuervos, Susticacan).

By the moment there is a lack of information of Jerez between 1660 to 1745 to find the rest of the family Sanchez-Castellanos. I hope some day we could check them. In that time, they

Sanchez-Castellanos
No, I did not. Just a correction the Hacienda of Sta Theresa and La Maza were the lands that Nicolas Sanchez-Castellanos gave them to fund the Capellania.

The Hacienda of Sta Rosa according the document was gotten ab 1689 so the Hacienda of Sta Theresa was founded after, the owners were Antonio de Escobedo y Valenzuela and Rosa Sanchez-Castellanos Bañuelos (daugther of Nicolas).

I do not know were they live before 1689 but my grandgrand.....father Sebastian Sanchez-Castellanos said that he was from The PARAJE (unknown for me), maybe this documents are of Jerez or Colotlan (missing documents or no filmed).

Sanchez-Castellanos

The wife was Maria Bañuelos Benavides daughter of Diego Bañuelos and María Benavides that lived in Teul de Gonzalez Ortega she was born in 1652in Teul and died in 1728 in Monte Escobedo one year after Nicolas´death(1727). I couldn´t find the married file because there aren´t files of that time. I was readind that in the Reforma´s war of Benito Juarez a person lastnamed Rojas from Tepatitlan was destroyed some files of the church.

Jose Domingo Sanchez Reza in the name of his brother Jose Antonio Sanchez Reza ask for the Capellania in 1806 when Juan Julio Macario Sanchez-Castellanos quit. They said that they were grandsons of Thomas Sanchez-Castellanos. Here the strange is that his mother was Maria de la Asuncion Sanchez-Castellanos daugther of Thomas, but they do not explain who the father was. Jose Domingo was a very important person in the church of Guadalajara, in 1820 was elected as Deputy for Guadalajara. Her brother Jose Antonio helped the people to join for gettin the independence of Mexico in San Antonio de los Adobes and was discovered.

I have looked it up in the website and the only castellanos I see are the Sanchez Castellanos but I don't think they are the same one. Antonio

their marriage which was on August 12, 1749 but it doesn't state their

Antonio was the son of the Cap. Juan de Escobedo and Teresa Ruiz de Esparza, he was the husbad of Maria Rosa Sanchez-castellanos y Bañuelos, their sons were Anselmo, Juan, Maria de San Pablo, Francisca and Juana.

Comentario

There were four Juan de Escobedo at the end of the 1600´s and the begin of 1700´s

Antonio de Escobedo the heritor of Juan de Escobedo and when Melchora de Cabrera died says "parienta" instead of mother.

Sebastian de Escobedo y Esparza born ab 1676

maria Rosa Sanchez-Castellanos born ab 1675.

Comentario

Juan de Escobedo y Cobarrubias was son of Francisco de Escobedo y Diaz. In 1669 Juan de Escobedo y Cobarrubias got married with Teresa de Ulloa (Teresa Ruiz de Esparza) in 1669, but ab 1684 Ana de Escobedo y Cabrera daughter of Juan de Escobedo and melchora de Cabrera got married with lorenzo de Ulloa Flores. So if the date is correct Juan de Escobedo el mozo had to be son of a previuos marriage of Juan de Escobedo y Diaz.

Juan de Escobedo had a brother called Fernando de Escobedo who lived in Tlaltenango.

Juan de Escobedo el mozo died ab 1691 and Juan de Escobedo y Diaz died in 1693 and said that his wife in that moment was Maria Villegas.

Mena Family - Research on Illegitimate Child

Hello, everyone. I'm researching the Mena family. Our family comes from Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco.

Does your bisabuelo have any Siblings. Did you look up baptismal
Records? Who are the padrinos? Do you have his marriage record ?

Comentario

His siblings are all half siblings from a different father, so their records were not helpful for his father's line. He married in the United States, and the record does not list his parents. He later had a church wedding in a Catholic church, and I'm hoping they will have more details.

Comentario

I haven't been able to find a baptismal record yet - The oral history in our family is that he couldn't be baptized because he was illegitimate. I don't know if that is true though.
I'm ordering his alien registration file from the National Archives, so hopefully I'll find some kinds of clue there.

Comentario

Indeed it can be very difficult to find the ancestors of an illegitimate child. If there are any male descendants of José Jesús Mena through a direct paternal line, I would recommend taking a Y-DNA test for him and posting the results at online databases. You may get a match from another branch of the family if they were also curious enough to take the same test.
Good luck with your search,

There have been many occasions where I have discovered the father of a illegitimate child. It sometimes takes a lot of work and luck. Sometimes the illegitimate offspring marry into the legitimate family and the truth comes out in marriage records, "informacion matrimonial", marriage dispensations. Sometimes I find the information in a baptismal record of a child where the illegitimate father uses his fathers last name when he baptized his child and sometimes gives the paternal grandfathers name. Sometimes I have found the information by following the descendancy of siblings. When following the descendancy of siblings you have to check their marriage records and baptismal records for clues. Sometimes a land dispute over inheritance will bring out information. Sometimes the illegitimate child will claim to be legitimate in some of their adult records and give the name of their biological father.

Though I have been successful at discovering the father on numerous occasions, I

Jonathan,   I have only gone to two places in Mexico, to Nochistlan Zac and Tlachichila Zac but did not have any luck in getting access to the actual records. Having said that it was at the beginning of my geneaological journey and in Tlachichila I think and hope that if I come prepared with documentation showing that I am doing verifiable research, I believe I might be allowed access. My cousins still live there and are well connected in the church. Hope as they say is everlasting so I will not lose hope.   I would advise you to be well prepared to present your credentials as a researcher and possibly be willing to pay a small fee or make a small donation to the church, nothing lost in trying. Many times church offices are closed because they have limited financial resources and cannot hire a full time secretary or receptionist. You might find the name of your town on-line, check for a contact name and number and

Jonathan, my "cemetary" experience in El Durazno was that someone in
each town has a key to the local cemetary, I did not find any that
were open, they were locked. At the older cemetary in Los Haros,
district of Jerez we were lucky that someone was working there and
agreed to let us in, we had to leave when they did. Cemetaries were
not taken care of but the marble monuments were huge and paid for by
relatives from the states who sent money I was told. When we were in
Guadalajara the same was true for the really old cemetaries, someone
had to admit us.
I had no luck finding records in Jerez Zacatecas, El Limon and
Tamazula Jalisco. Clerks were overworked and without copy machines or
time to give us. I had better luck with the records at the FHC.
The trip was still very much worth the time and money, wonderful
people just researching records is not a priorty for them. I asked to

Jonathan, I spent 3 days in Ciudad Guzman/Zapotlan El Grande but
didn't know at the time that my ancestors had lived there so didn't
look at it through those eyes. There are 2 church's in the square.
A very large one and to the side a small one. If your searching for
specific records double check which of the two church's have them.
The people were very friendly and there are a great variety of
hotels and motels with a very old one right in the plaza area. It's
a hub for everything in that part of Jalisco. My destination was
Tamazula and Zapotiltic but the accomodations there were terrible so
we returned each night to our motel in Ciudad Gusman, I believe the
rooms ran about $40. American for a room for 3 people and were very
nice. Lot's of good place's to eat and even a natural yogurt and
health food store that was wonderul.
Good luck on your trip, Linda in Everett

Hello Everyone!

Daniel,

I think that would be a great idea to get a copy of those documents and
address the topic with Mariano Gonzalez Leal. I think it's about time we
solve this mystery. Or at least rule out certain families as the parents of
Toribio.

Hola Page and Daniel,

It's the sites like you mention geni and the others that really confused me
going back to the 1300s with ancestors of Toribio Hernandez de Arellano.
When I started I wasn't aware that they had false information and thought
it must be known information and I was convinced I descended from Cortés
and many others. I still think that if you use apellidos like Hurtado de
Mendoza or Ramirez de Arellano that their must be a connection to those
ruling houses and would just like to know which line is correct.

Unfortunately, we have not come up with the document that states who. Toribios father and mother are. Though most of my research indicates that he does belong to this Fernandez de Hijar and Ramirez de Arellano family. There is another Ramirez de Arellano family that converted to Catholicism and was originally Jewish. My research has led to the conclusion that Toribio did not belong to the Converso Ramirez de Arellano and did belong to the Ramirez de Arellano de Santillana family. Much discussion of the information that we do have has led to the hypothesis that he was a grandson of Juan Fernandez de Hijar and not his son. This hypothesis has Toribio as possibly being born in the "new world". This hypothesis includes the idea that he was baptized with the first name of an ancestor but went by Toribio.

We are left to hypothesize until we find a primary source that directly links him to his parents.

Mia,

I don't know anything about this topic, but I did have a question. I notice
that in several places on the forum, Toribio Hernandez de Arellano's birth
is said to be 1530; my question is, is that date known or is it just a
guess? Because I looked up Juan Fernandez de Hijar and he died June
29th, 1509, which would be 21 years before Toribio Hernandez de Arellano
was born if 1530 is right.

Comentario

Paige,

Toribio's estimated birth year was set at 1530 due to the various notorial, wills, birth records, etc that are found in Santa Maria de los Lagos and La Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara. I personally do not have these, but Mariano Gonzalez Leal has them several copies of them. I can ask if I can get a copy or bring up the subject to his attention if you would like. Please, remember until there is an actual document that states the day, month and year it is not scripture. Priest committed errors, even some people it appears did not know what year they were born, etc. Even if the record says, he was (i.e. 30) it does not satisfy me until I have a primary source. Many people have been trying to connect our ancestors to the royal houses of Europe. Many of has have succeeded, but in the case of Toribio and Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza. We need documents. We can't simply say, I think. We need to get into a habit of using documents. I have found many websites with his parents as Juan Fernan

Hello all,

I was curious what new information is available regarding the ancestry
of Toribio Hernandez de Arellano, the spouse of Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza.
I reviewed many older Nuestros Ranchos forums regarding Toribio and most
say that he's the son of Count Juan Fernandez de Hijar and Isabel de
Arellano. Does anyone know if that's true?

Mia

Comentario

Mia,

There is no direct evidence that they are his parents. I believe when it was discussed originally in the forum, it was a mere hypothesis. Though there exists some evidence that may point that direction, but we cannot simply "assume" that's how it is. I am amazed after doing a quick google search the many hits I got. Do these people simply copy, paste and pass information without citations? Where are the documents? Have they studied them page by page? Where did they obtain? What evidence exists that names his parents? This is not genealogy, I get restless of people doing such things.

Comentario

Mia ,

I agree with Daniel. We have not come up with direct evidence for his parents. We have only come up with information that leads us to believe who his parents are but lack confirmation. Without confirmation it is just a hypothesis based on the information we have at hand. Yet it is not just a shot in the dark. It is not just a guess. The hypothesis is an educated guess based on the evidence that we do possess.
I do list his parents in my family tree but the lack of confirmation has me placein parenthesis "check notes" as to why they are his probable parents. In my notes The parents that I list are based on circumstantial evidence only and he does descend from the Hernandez de Hijar and Ramirez de Arellano family
I used to believe that it is possible that Toribio is not the name given to him at birth. If Toribio was a nickname that later stuck, then his baptismal name should have been used for the marriage sacrament according to canon law. Documents other than marriage

Comentario

I have looked through my records and confirmed that Diego Ramires and Ines Brenes are not the parents of Toribio Hernandez Ramirez.
Diego's son Gonzalo married Toribio's grandaughter.
It appears Diego and Toribio are related and a marriage dispensation would confirm this.
I still believe that Juan Hernandez de Hijar and Isabel Ramirez de Arellano are Toribio's parents. All evidence that I have points in this direction.

Diego Ramirez and Ines Brenes' descendants would have created the Ramirez

de Mendoza after the Ramirez de Arellano married hurtado de Mendoza. I agree

with Juan Hernandez de Hijar and Isabel Ramirez de Arellano we just need that solid

document. There has to be some sort of document somewhere people dont just pop out

of no where.

I believe that because we have not found this document in mexico that there is a high probability that they were married in spain and that is where we would find a dispensation due to their blood relationship.

I have become confused so anyone that can help me I would appreciate it! I had the parents for Toribio Hernandez de Arellano 1530(spouse: Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza) as Juan Hernandez de Hijar and Isabel Ramirez de Arellano but as I recheck all my info trying to put it together I find that he is also listed with Diego Ramirez and Ines de Brienes as his parents. They are listed as Mexican Spanish, since the Texans think of light skinned Mexicans as "Spanish" and not "Mexican". It looks like they came from Camargo, Chihuahua, and that Matilde had been married before to a Francisco Castillo, and she had a son named Blas Castillo, as well as a daughter Justina born 1897 and another son Juan born 1900 before she had Tranquilina and one other child in Texas from Pedro Vasuez who she married in 1896.

trying to understand the "Tronco" in a marriage record

example: Tronco
Nicolas Lozano
Jose santos Lozano 1. Timotea Lozano
Proquinta Lozano 2. Telisfora Reinaga

Comentarios

Comentario

Thats pretty much all about those "troncos", in this case starts with Nicolas Lozano, then the first generation (primer grado de consanguinidad) are brother and sister; Jose santos and Timotea, their kids, first cousins are Proquinta and Telisfora, their kids, second cousins are Ma. Trinidad and Lorenzo, and the last ones, third cousins, Jose G. and Maria, which in this case they must be the Groom and Bride.

The advantage of this information is that it can take you back a couple of generations even with people who have different last names, like in this case. Also even if the name of the spouses are not given we can a least know their possible last name with their kids, thus Timotea Lozano must have married someone with the Reinaga surname, and so on. Those are a least some extra clues.

I want to thank you so much for taking your valued time and helping me out with this I am so greatful. you have given me some knowledge that will help me with my quest. once again thank you and have a blessed day

Comentario

No problem, I am glad I can help even just a little, and I keep learning on the process. By the way I am curious, those last names sound like Nochistlan's or around the area, are they?.

Comentario

yes I been told that sometime before jalpa. Nochistlan was were most came from I havent looked in Nochistlan yet I was tring to get as much as I could from Jalpa and surroundings. I am new to looking for my ancestors Iam trying to get an angle at this if there is one maybe there isnt.Ived found 26 people so far with the little that i know and people like yourself helping people like me it helps alot I think Nochistlan will be my next stop any suggestion that might put me in the right direction. oh before I forget which last names sound like Nochistlan? Dad side: Perez ,Frias, Villarreal,Salas Mom side: Duran,Cocolan,Lozano,Martinez. The last names I found with the new grandparents I found Dad side: Silva ,Huerta ,Rodriguez ,Munoz ,Medina ,Cuarenta and Mom side:Alvarez,Lopez,Figueroa,Juaquin, I didnt plan to write this much sorry

Comentario

I have studied some records there but haven't fully landed on the area yet (although I am going backwards, from older ancestors to earliest), seen Duran and Lozano in the same record make me think it could it be related to Nochistlan, it was just a guess more than knowledge though, I have some Lozano from there on my ancestors but haven't had the time to study them, those names seams very prolific there, same as Frias, Perez and Rodriguez, since very early in time. Don't hesitate asking here in the forums, there is lots of knowledgeable people that can help, I myself found many interesting facts here.

Comentario

Well, It wasn't a genealogical tree, those relationship diagrams where only to point out the "parentesco" and the degree of it. Thus if just one line is at question, all other individuals are left out (unfortunately for us). This information where not meant for the individuals but rather for the ecclesiastical authorities to check, thus they have to simplify it, putting extra information (including the names of the husbands/wifes) could made difficult to understand, something that they would not likely want to bother with.

As a side note the 1st degree are brothers, and goes on from there. Also if there was more than one line of relationship then they would add a diagram for each line.
