Research Digest, Vol 111, Issue 4

I believe Estefana did have different parents. (I'm going over old notes a distant cousin wrote for me.) this cousin had Estefana listed as having Tadeo Dias & Genoveva as the parents. But I do remember hearing him say that Tadeo had a twin. I believe Estefana was the daughter of that twin.

The other interesting fact (possibility), is that the family of Tadeo Dias connects on two branches of my paternal line. (My paternal grandmother and grandfather).

(This also happened on my maternal line as well.) I know it was not uncommon to marry ones cousin back in those days.

Sebastian de Avila & Lugarda Dias de Leon / Nicolas de Avila & Gertrudis Falcon de la Garza of Pinos, Zacatecas

I have reviewed a dispensation that identifies Sebastian de Avila as the son of Nicolas de Avila (and with further research, Sebastian's mother was Gertrudis Falcon de la Garza). Sebastian's wife is most commonly known as Lugarda (or Josefa Lugarda) Dias de Leon (or sometimes her last name is Becerra).

I am trying to locate the marriage records for Sebastian and Lugarda and Nicolas and Gertrudis. Sebastian and Lugarda had children born in Ojuelos and Pinos (the children were born between 1771-1791), but the marriage records in Ojuelos don't reach as far back as 1770/1771 as far as I can tell. Is there another city where those records could be kept?

Nicolas and Gertrudis had children in Pinos and San Felipe, Guanajuato; the oldest child I have found so far was baptized in 1727 in Pinos. I have not located a marriage record for Nicolas and Gertrudis, yet, but I'm hoping someone on NR has encountered it in Pinos or elsewhere. Nicolas is noted as the brother of Bernardo de Avila, who in turn is the son of Juan Lopez de Avila and Juana de Trujillo.

Any help would be appreciated,

Rosalinda

Looking for roots of Estefana Dias and Redecindo Torres

Hope I'm doing this right.

I'm looking for Estefana Dias and her marriage to REdecindo Torres. Estefana's parents were Tadeo Dias and Genoveva Leanos. They resided in Santa Maria De Los Angeles,Jalisco,Mexico. The closest date I have is 1846 when a brother Florentino Diaz was married to Brigida Cabrera on October 8th, 1846.

I'm currently looking on familysearch.org but am unsure how to go about ordering the film number. An even bigger problem-No hablo o leo espanol!

Any advice on how to pursue this task would be greatly appreciated.

Gracias.

Dear Primos, Family, and Friends:

May the beauty of the season, flowers and new life bring joy, hope and peace into each heart, as we remember with thanksgiving our many blessings. I certainly rejoice when I see evidence of pride in accomplishment and respect for our shared Hispanic/Latino heritage.

Woman’s month in March resulted in lots of Latina women being acknowledged, such as a huge, many group Mariachi concert in Los Angeles, a tribute to Linda Ronstadt.

An article “7 Powerful Latina Women Who Made Their Mark on History” by John Paul Brammer identifies some women to remember.

Also, Margarito J. Garcia III asked us to remember the bravery of Las Adelitas, the Mexican women who traveled with the Mexican army during the Mexican Revolution. A new Documentary
Rebel: Loreta Velazaquez Civil War Soldier and Spy is about a Latina in the US Civil War.

In this issue you’ll find current Latinas making a difference: Yuri Rodriguez (astronaut), Julissa Arce (Goldman Sachs analyst), Maribel Avila (restaurant manger), Sara Ines Calderon (writer/activist). Rosie Carbo (lifestyle writer), Lynn Alvarez (playwriter).

Teresa Valcarce (colonial history activist) expands her efforts to promote Spanish General, Bernardo de Galvez.

In California, many Latinas were recognized by State and US elected officials, such as Rosa Barragan as Woman of the Year by California Assemblymember Ian Calderon. California State Senator Ben Hueso recognized Maria E.
Garcia (educator/Chicano activist) as a Woman of the Year.

Sylvia Tillotson, descendent of Jose Antonio Navarro was the leadership behind the cenotaph (statue on opening page) now located prominently in the Texas State cemetery. California Tataviam Chief, Mary Cooke Garcia is remembered.

Accompanying his article on Filipinos in Romania, Eddie Calderon sent a photo of modern Filipinas enjoying an evening together in “Far Away Places.

In including all with a Spanish surname, as of some Hispanic heritage, I can say with confidence that our presence historically is all over the world. Do read the articles about the Spanish in Japan and Ireland.

Enjoy, Mimi

Conde of Hacienda San Mateo, Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico paid for expedition to Texas

I am reading a PDF file that is long and interesting on Colonial Zacatecas.

I ran across this section where it says that the Conde of Hacienda San Mateo had paid, 70,000 pesos for an expedition to Texas:

http://oi61.tinypic.com/33kdq9h.jpg

Where did I find this PDF file? It is the one "Actores Educativos de la region minera Zacatecas"

Juan De Angon - One of First Pobladores of Valparariso, Zacatecas, Mexico

I am chatting with a historian of Zacatecas, Mexico and he lives over there. He told me that he recently met someone from San Luis Potosi that has the "padrones" book of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico year 1648.

He says that Juan De Angon was one of the first settlers of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico in 1648. That he was "viudo" and had a son name "Esteban Angon" who was the heir of his rancho. Which later became, "Santa Rosa"

In the past I had posted a "pasajero de indias" of Juan De Angon 1606 to Nuevo Galicia:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/22619

He is reading that document for me since he is familiar with that style of writing.

Nice Video of Monte Escobedo, Zacatecas, Mexico

This video is excellent all the churches and one church that caught my attention is the one in minute 1:54. I was wondering what church is that and what are the white squares on the floor in front of the church entrance. Pretty Monte Escobedo in all the areas they show:

Never give up

I have been stuck for years on finding the parents of my 4th great grandfather Jose Ysidro Hurtado. I knew his name from baptism records and marriage dispensation of my 3rd great grandfather Rafael Hurtado but could never find Ysidro's parents names. I checked the baptism records of all of children I could find through LDS and no luck the parents were listed but not grandparents. Yesterday I was searching LDS and found the baptism record for Yisdro's youngest daughter Josefa Petronila De Jesus Hurtado and the grandparents were listed. This find was a double bit of luck in that I found Ysidro's parents were Francisco Hurtado and Augustina De Anda. The other bit of luck was that I was able to confirm with another source the parents of Ysidro's wife Rosa Munos.
Moral of the story genealogy isn't easy but eventually it comes together.

Victoriano Huerta's Genealogy - Marquez de los Olivos

I have been working for some time on documenting the ancestors and descendants of Victoriano Huerta. I have put my research online and have had a number of people contact me about it, including a professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California who is writing a biography of Victoriano Huerta and who found a number of the documents there very useful.

http://ramosfamily.org/nextgen/getperson.php?personID=I2440

I am stuck on his mother's lineage, which I am convinced comes from the Marquez de los Olivos, but I have been unable to find the parents of the earliest documented ancestor (Felipe Marquez de los Olivos who was born circa 1700 and married Francisca Xaviera Sanchez probably in Tlaltenango).

http://ramosfamily.org/nextgen/getperson.php?personID=I2561

If anyone has any insights into this I would greatly appreciate them.

ESPANOL

http://ramosfamily.org/nextgen/getperson.php?personID=I2440

Help please

You all have been so helpful in the past I hate to ask for a favor. I am having trouble with this Marriage Dispensation. I am trying to locate Francisco Hurtado Jimenez’ parents names. I found one of his abuelos but no luck with parents. The web page is https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18409-49962-16?cc=1874591&wc…
It starts with image 443 and goes through 454.

Thank you all in advance, I am taking Spanish classes but I am not there yet.

In the past I had wondered about education in colonial Mexico.

I was looking through the PARS website for Testamentos (filtered for archivos de indias) and browsing each one to see if I can find any for for our region (Jalisco,Zacatecas, Aguascalientes) in Mexico.

Just out of curiosity, I ran across one that mentiones "Universidad de Mexico:

Help with marriage record - Calletano Franco 1840

I'm having difficulty completely understanding this marriage record for Calletano Franco (top of left page). It's from San Juan de los Lagos, 1840. I thought it was going to be for Calletano Franco and Lugarda Martin, but I can't tell if what comes after Lugarda is a surname (doesn't appear to be capitalized) or if it means something else. It seems like there may be quite a few abbreviations.

I'm hoping someone better acquainted with the script and church language can help me decipher it. Thank you.

Huejuquilla El Alto 1649 - Order

Saw something interesting in the PARS website:

On 20 of April 1649, there was an order to burn two temple idols in order to build new Valle De Huejuqulla near Tenzompa:

Pictures of Parroquia San Juan De Bautista Church of Mezquitic, Jalisco, Mexico

There are several churches in Mezquitic and I believe this one is the Parroquia de San Juan Bautista:

The inside:

Here is some pictures of a Priest giving mass on what looks like a top of a mountain and look at the view of the valley off in the distance? Seems more like if he is at Monte Escobedo. Because when we had traveled past there Monte Escobedo is on top of a mountain and Mezquitic is down at the valley:

If you notice in this picture there are some old steps in the distance

Closer look at the old steps:

I wonder how old are those steps and what was there?
