Instructions for PAF and FTM

Here you will find instructions by Angie Godina on PAF and from me on
FTM.

Can you all have a look and help me "Flesh" out the FTM instructions. I
know I'm missing something basic that needs to be included. Send me
your suggestions and I'll make the changes accordingly

"Ranchos Support Fund"

For now we are over a hundred members strong.  I would like to run
something past you that is open for discussion. Would anyone object to
having a completely optional "Ranchos Support Fund"?

I was thinking if a few of us sent in a few buck we might be able to
have $100 stipends available to send off to members that are in need or
for projects that are supportive of the Ranchos Group. This effort
would need a volunteer "use" committee which would have at least 3
members (no ties) and one of those would be a treasurer to hold the
funds. Before the "use" committee would decide on a "use" they would
bring up the use for group discussion. but after the discussion the
decision for the use would be made by the committee.

If this is something that you all would consider going forward on then
I would like to nominate Kitty Cortez to be one of the committee
members and possibly the Treasurer. Also I would like to pledge $25 to
start the contributions.

But all that is premature if you all think this is not something
worthwhile.

what say ye?

I'm an old woodsman from way back. I used to and still do heat a
majority of the time with a wood insert and split wood. One way to keep
from hurting yourself is to keep your Ax razor honed to make sure it
"bites" and doesn't glance off like a dull Ax is likely to do and catch
a leg. My Ax is currently ready to go, but I'm really expecting that
most on the Ax list will communicate and not stay on the list.

pps: well here is a better effort. Check out this death cert for my GGG

the way of a Palo. That almost happened to me once. And it was one big palo!

Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation

Arturo,

I participated in the study years ago. However, they have not started
publishing mtDNA results yet. They plan on publishing them to their
website sometime next year.

I would encourage everyone to participate. You could potentially have
your pedigree chart extended many generations by participating. Here
is an excerpt from their website:
"The corresponding pedigree chart is also extended by staff
genealogists as far as genealogical databases allow; extended pedigrees
currently include over one million ancestral records."

My brother and I both submitted our samples along with our full gedcom
file (not just the 4 generation pedigree chart they require). They
hide all information on living individuals, so you don't have to worry
about privacy.

I am thinking of joining the study being conducted by the Sorenson
Genealogy Foundation. They are basically linking documented
genealogies with yDNA and mtDNA markers so that people can use their
database to get clues as to origins and to break throughbrick walls.

Has anyone looked into this or participated in this? It is interesting
to use their database. I have been able to find matches for 18 of 19

Edward Serros wrote:

that key word is "Simply". . .after you go through a few rounds of
"unsubscribing" members like I have and a good few of the other members
have, one thing will be clear. I don't unsubscribe members becasue they
simply didn't submit their genealogy report. The way I figure some
folks are in "extreme" non participant mode and I do these "Ax"
sessions on average of once a year to 18 months. I think this is my 3rd
go around. If a person doesn't have enough "gumption" to at the very
least email me and say they are interested in staying in the group then
they are gone. The key is "lack of participation" I can't say to people
they need to participate that is so subjective, but I can say that
everyone needs to "show" a small sign of life and that sign to me is at
the very least to email me in response to my "Ax" email and say

"hey it's my 'jobs, lack of time, lack of resources, lack of family
sources, etc' or any of another reasons"

One member unknown to me lives in New Orleans and they were
busy, hey
no further dialogue on that subject was needed. Meaning understood.

I guarantee you that I have not unsubscribed anyone in the past that
didn't even email me and say something like the above. and I view them
as reasons not excuses. Afterall "life does happen."

I guess I am subjectively defining "participation" in this and in past
emails of this sort as: "Participation in the ranchos
group is emailing me either directly or indirectly once every year to
18 months saying you have some reason why you can't send in your
genealogy report."

I feel strongly about the participation part even though I feel like
I'm being a wimp about it for being so lax in how much people should
participate. So I guess it comes down to am I "still" being to strict?.
. .well according to the statistics of that one poll we had awhile back
this is how the too few people who voted to make it an official vote
felt:

have it a strong suggestion.

Joseph,

I do not think you should "ax" any member simply because they have not submitted a
genealogy report. There are many possible reasons why this may have not been done---
jobs, lack of time, lack of resources, lack of family sources, etc. Everyone from the
ranchos area may have something to contribute; the genealogy report may be the least
important item. Something as simple as a discussion of capirotada may bring back
memories so real and so important that it far outweighs a laundry list of people going
back 300 years.

I feel very strongly about this. I offer my spot in the membership to someone else who
does not have the "requirements" but wants to stay in the group. I have done everything
the group has been asked to do, including participation in discussions.

We need more people, not less. We need more history, not less. We need more ideas, not
less. We don't need more web site space, we need more more memories. We need more of
everything, not less of everything. Genealogy reports and DNA reports are only part of the
entire picture as we explore our roots and ourselves.

I appreciate all you have done and the energy you have provided for the group. I anticipate

1876 Jalisco Map in Links

Irma,

You could save the map to a file then open it up in photo editer
program. Crop it to remove all the white space from the sides then
resize it to your page (8x11.5). Make sure when you resize it that
you maintain the same proportions. Usally in the photo editer
programs there is usually a check box for that. You should then be
able to print.

Good luck.
Angie

you can download it and then burn it onto a CD then hunt hunt hunt for
the best place that does blueprint reproduction near you and have them
make a copy. It is about a yard square.

By now you will have received many recipes for "capirotada", the lenten
dish.  Each family has its own version but basically it is a bread
pudding as Emilie described.  One Lent I introduced it to our mostly non
Hispanic office. It quickly lost its lenten character and now is requested as a
dessert whenever we have a pot luck gathering or fundraiser.  Capirotada by
any other name takes just as good.  What a wonderful group!!  From
capirotada to DNA with gusto.

Garana version by mail.

1876 Jalisco Map in Links

Interesting map
Thanks for the map. I found a ranch or pueblo where
one of my greatggggmothers once lived-S. Jose de la
Isla, approximately on the year 1797. I also
confirmed the road that once ran through my
greatggggfathers ranch Lo de Luna; the road was a
direct line from Jerez to Zacatecas, and my
great--uncle Tiburcio Duarte in 1815 charged the
stagecoach line for passing through his ranch or road.

Lilli,

I have run across a number of Oñate family members coming over from Spain on my review
of Archivos en Red. Unfortunately I can not tell you which year it was since I had no need to
make copies. I have reviewed
every record in the Pasajeros list from 1635 to 1790 which is
the time frame you will find the Oñates; quite a number came over. If you use the Archivos en
Red, be very patient.

my haplogroup

Hi Ed,

Thank you for responding and for your insights. It has spurred me on
to more research.

After much searching I finally know my haplogroup. I went back to
FamilyTree/Ancestry.com and looked up my results again. They did not
list my haplogroup but referred me to a Haplogroup motifs website
http://www.stats.gla.ac.uk/~vincent/founder2000/motif.html

My haplogroup is U5a1a. From my mtDNA. You are correct in assuming
my dad is dead. His sister is also dead and left no biological
children. My brother will give me his YDNA sample to research with.
