racial classifications

I have one ancestress whose birth record lists her as mestisa (that's how it was spelled) but her parents are listed in Luz M. Hilton's book as espagnoles and her son's birth record lists him as espagnol--go figure!!:( I think it had to do with did her parents (who were aristocrats, I might add) pay the priest enough for the baptism? Probably not. Marge:)

I'm hoping someone has the answer to why different classification are
used for the same race. I'm working on my Rolon line from Zapotlan El
Grande and Tamazula.. Listings include Mulato, Lobo and Morisco for
Blacks... why are they not all called the same thing? These are
marriage records from the mid 1700's. They also put Blacks in a
different leger than Espanoles and Mestizo's, does anyone know if
there is a reason for this?

Rancho del Muerto

In a marriage record for a Magallanas ancestor, Tlaltenango - 1764, he is listed as being from "Rancho del Muerto". (Hmmm I wonder how that rancho was named). Has anyone encountered ancestors from this rancho? I am looking for other possible connections...especially, since many of the families in these ranchos were related.

Another big "Thank You" to Emilie from Port Orchard. I have been referring to an e-mail that you sent me March 2003...valuable info as this is the line of a Magallanas that I am currently assisting...Gracias...

Alberto,

You can filter your searches at Google using the minus sign (-). For
example, the expression: genealogía duarte -portugal, will exclude all
the pages that have the word portugal. Need to play around with your
search expressions. You can combine several filters as well as words
within quotes and words without quotes in the same expression.

It helps reviewing the search tips from Google itself once in a while.

I hope you had better luck that me. I use google but
when I type "Duarte genealogia", the information I
receive is about 98% from the Portuguese branch and
very little from the Spanish Branch, and about 0% from
Mexico.

But google is a good source.

Tlaxcaltecas en el Chichimeca

Alberto:

Thanks for the information. Based on that article, I found a very
useful book on the topic, which Schmal references:

People of the Peyote: Huichol Indian History, Religion, & Survival
(Paperback) by Stacy B. Schaefer (Editor), Peter T. Furst (Editor)

I also ordered one of his books on genealogy.

Mexican-American Genealogical Research: Following the Paper Trail to
Mexico (Paperback) by John Schmal, Donna Morales

I have also found a couple of books published by a University in
Tlaxcala that are precisely on the topic of Tlaxacltec settlements in
Zacatecas:

Los tlaxcaltecas en el estado de Zacatecas: sublevaciones

Zamora

Thank you for your help, especially the map! I do believe my Mendez
family from Tamazula may have come from Michoacan... Looks like many
people followed the jobs, my family seems to have worked the sugar
cane.
thank you again, Linda in Wa.

Zamora/Samora Jalisco?

Zamora is in Michoacan.  A few months ago, I placed a posting about how I found a relationship between peoples in parts of Jalisco (Los Altos) and those from the upper western portion of Michoacan.  I think you are re-confirming what I've seen to observe.

filming Sombrerete

New Mexico State U. has filmed 3 archives from Mexico: three
collections in Durango--"the archives from the Durango Cathedral,
the state's notary records and a portion of the colonial materials
from the state historical archives." The Sombrerete will be the 4th
one.

NMSU worked with the town council to gain permission to film those
documents from Sombrerete. The person in charge at NMSU is
Dennis Daily. Perhaps you can contact him and inquire about future
projects.

Gloria,

Is this the only municipality in Zacatecas that they will be filming? Just curious as to why only this region and not others. Maybe someone at the university is from that area?

Thanks for sharing your immigration stories

I have enjoyed reading the various contributions of the ranchos members
regarding immigration stories. Struggles, sacrifices, and successes.
Someone asked if I was the immigrant - I am not; my father came to this
country in 1916 when he was 4 years old. His genealogy and a brief
story (one paragraph) regarding an episode in that journey is in the
files (JJ Castro). That brief paragraph explains with whom he traveled.
Thanks again - are there any other immigration stories? I will have to
compose the rest of my family's story, and hope to post in a few days.
(I'm afraid I don't have as many details as some of you.)

My Father's Immigration

Yes, Alberto,

We are lucky to have been brought to this great land of opportunity.  Our ancestors would be proud of our accomplishments.

A sad story but a happy ending.
Our story is almost the same.  After my grandfather
Alberto Duarte Vasquez died in 1923, in Mapimi, my
grandmother Maria Luz Cuevas Luera gathered all of her
5 kids and headed for El Paso, Texas, where she lived
and eventually died after some 40 years.  The Mexican
civil war of 1915 and the flu epidemic devastated most
of the population of central Mexican states.  Over
half of my dad's family died because of the flu
epidemic, which led of my grandfather's heavy drinking
and eventual death.

The good part of this story is that my grandmother saw
that there was no future for her kids in Mexico and
did something about it.

But can you imagine, my ancestors to come to the new
world about 1550 and prospered in Zacatecas and
Chihuahua, become ranchers, farmers, generals,
lawyers, governors, teachers, musicians, after a short
time in new Spain and Mexico, but eventually all this
was lost for most of them, and they came to this
country penniless but with hope. And again, we are
building a new generation of teachers, writers,
engineers, accountants, managers, officers, lawyers,
politicians, and farmers, all in this country called
the United States of America. We are lucky!

For those that don't know John Schmal, he is probably
the leading historian on Zacatecas that I know, which
includes both Zacatecas and the United States. You
can also write to him and he will reply.
