HOGAR de Dallas

Hello, my name is Arturo Garza and I belong to a Hispanic organization based in Dallas, Texas.  The name of the organization is HOGAR de Dallas.  HOGAR stand for Hispanic Organization for Genealogy And Research, and as the name indicates, our organization caters mainly to Hispanic research.  We are a young organization -- came into existance in 1998.

Every year we publish a journal which includes articles, stories, family charts, queries, and anything else that pertains to genealogy.  Some of the family stories may not pertain specifically to genealogy, but the stories contain information about individuals, how they grew up, who they grew up with, where they grew up, etc.  These stories have helped readers of our journals with some of their research because of names and places mentioned in the family stories.

Membership and sale of the journals is how HOGAR de Dallas remains in existance and we're able to provide genealogy research workshops in local libraries.

This year we are providing a scholarship to a Dallas ISD Senior, who is going to college in the Fall.  The scholarship isn't much money, but nowadays, any amount of money helps.  This is our year to provide a scholarship.  The entries submitted by the Senior was a 3 or 4 generation family chart, with accompaning history.  In the process of doing the research for the scholarship, some of the individuals mentioned that they enjoyed the research because they got to learn about their family.  In one instance, a closer family relationship resulted because the family worked on the project together.  That was nice to hear.

The reason I am writing is that there is a lot of information, and family charts, being distributed among the members of this group, and I'd like to ask if any of you would like to contribute articles, family charts, or research "hints and tips" to our journals.  You don't have to be a member to contribute articles to our journals.  Any information that is submitted for publishing in our journal is published as it is received, we do not modify it in anyway whatsoever.  And, of course, credit is given to the submitter.

In the film for Jose Thomas Romero's marriage. His parents are
listed as Manuel Romero and Ana Maria Casas. I think (in my opinion)
we are talking about the same Manuel Romero. Manuel's brother
Joachin Romero and his wife Dominga Josepha De La Torre, are my Great
(x6)-Grand-Parents. Their daughter, Maria Alvina Victoria Romero and
her husband, Feliciano Acencio Marquez, are my Great(x5)-Grand-
Parents. This is the same couple that appears in the Saus de la
Marques Census.

Manuel Romero

did I reply to this???

No I don't have any of their dates but I do have some of their children:
see 2 pdf's

I'm guess somewhere around the mid 1700's as a dob for Manuel and maybe
around 1760-70 for Simon and Tomas. . .just a guess though,

as to locations only for the births of the children.

WOW! One More Technique

Now I guess its obvious why I started this group. And its obvious why I
toss in my comments on how I do my research. That one technique has got
to be the best thing. . .I just used it and came up with long lists of
people I want to investigate. I'm sure later it will help me find
relatives. Angie, thanks!!!

Hey Joseph,

more. Have you ever tried using the "Use exact spelling" checkbox?
Leave all fields blank except the last name field. In the last name
field type in the father's last name, then the mother's last name.
Both last names in the same field. Then click the checkbox and run
the search. I have been able to find many people using this method.
The only thing is that at least one of the last names have to be
uncommon. Otherwise you will get a list of like 200 names. When I
run the searches I generally get less the 25 names and I can look at
the individuals based on location. You also have to think about the
different spelling variations.

For example: Diaz Sanchez (two common last names, probably not a
good example... :( ...) But if you did want to search for them the
variations would be:

1. Diaz Sanchez
2. Dias Sanchez
3. Diaz Sanches
4. Dias Sanches

This has helped me in many cases when the person used multiple
names. For example I have someone who sometimes went by Jose, Pedro,
and Antonio. Finally found his christening record and it did list
all three names as Jose Pedro Antonio Mirmamontes!

One More Technique

Hey Joseph,

Yes, I have used the parent search for the majority of my
searches... That is how I have been able to get the majority of my
information. I use all the searches you described plus about two
more. Have you ever tried using the "Use exact spelling" checkbox?

The second search I have used with parents names, is after doing all
the other searches mentioned, get a list of batch numbers for
couple's children. Go to the search page where it asks for batch
number. Type in either just the father's last name, or just the
mother last name, or just the father and mother's first names. And
run the search. This helps get searches where names are mispelled.
The Soundex doesn't always pick up mispelled last names. Or in cases
where the last name is spelled correctly but is listed as part of
their first name and so searching by that last name doesn't yield any
results. I have been able to find Romero's spelled Ramero (probably
the person typing into the system misread a tail on the 'o'). And I
have found Valensuela's spelled Valenssuela (for some reason soundex
doesn't make it a match). All kinds of names get mixed around.

Anyway...just thought I would add my two cents...hope this helps
people with their searches.

One Technique: Parent Search

How many of you all are thoroughly using the IGI parent search feature
of the Family Search website? Now I'm not saying that I am either but
here are a few of the strategies I use in hunting for my ancestors.

I'm going to use my Great Great Grandparents: Lucio Santa Maria and
Cecilia Lugo. My Aunt Julia Espinoza gave me their names in a
conversation one day. I went straight to IGI search page and plugged
their names into the parent section. These are the names that I turned up:

Mexico
Father: Lucio Santa Maria, Mother: Cecilia Lugo

1. CAYETANO SANTA LUGO - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 11 AUG 1857 Tepetongo, Zacatecas, Mexico
2. MARIA ANTONIA SANTA LUGO - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 17 JUN 1862 Tepetongo, Zacatecas, Mexico
3. ALBINO SANTA LUGO - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 20 DEC 1869 Tepetongo, Zacatecas, Mexico
4. BLAS SANTA LUGO - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 01 DEC 1859 Tepetongo, Zacatecas, Mexico
5. VICTORIANA DE LA TRINIDAD SANTA LUGO - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 05 SEP 1845 Tepetongo, Zacatecas, Mexico
6. JOSEF SANTA LUGO - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 12 DEC 1864 Tepetongo, Zacatecas, Mexico

Now I hope everyone knows that you have to try all the different
combinations of names to get a the most out of the Parent search, for
example:

In addition to 1) Lucio Santa Maria and Cecilia Lugo I used these other
possible combinations:

2) Lucio Santa Maria and Maria Lugo
3) Jose Santa Maria and Cecilia Lugo
4) Jose Santa Maria and Maria Lugo

Many times I have found other children of the same couple by using the 4
possible combinations for a single couple. But in this case I found no
additional children.

but if I would have stopped here I would have missed a few more of their
children.

Macintosh Users/Other Problems

Just in case anyone out there is using a Macintosh: Let me know if you
need any of the files that might be difficult to open and I'll cut and
paste them into an email. Or for that matter if anyone is having any
kind of difficulty reading the messages from the archives or anything
else let me know on private email and we'll work on it together.

Nadine Vasquez

Joseph, Nadine and I just had a conversation about boundary changes
recently. Yes, it is very likely that Colotlan was in the Zacatecas
diocese in earlier times. As for whether or not the records are now
stored in the Guadalajara archdiocese. I'll have to ask Nadine to
see if she knows. Her line is busy right now...
As for the 2nd question, I think I can answer that one. I have looked
at a few of those films and the reason some years appear to be
duplicated is that the original books had lose pages and many of them
are out of order. They appear to have been microfilmed exactly as
they were found. I think you'll find that for example Jan-Feb 1685
will be in one film, March-June in another, etc. but not duplicated.

Historical resource

Luz has helped me for free on several occasions, going so far as to tell me
what cities my clan could be found in a particular generation and offering
historical information about Jalisco and Zacatecas. She does charge for
specific family research, however, and I have not yet used her services for
this purpose. A couple of years ago she was excited to message with me
for free, offering lots of advice, but my Spanish is slow and inadequate.

Ask again and see if they remember anything else. Sometime when you
interview someone they will not remember anything when asked a direct
question so maybe the story approach would work. Maybe asking then stuff
like tell me about what Bis Abuelita Tomasita did in Mexico. Get them
going on some story about her life and maybe the story they are telling
will trigger some tidbit about location. Or maybe get them going on some
story about how Abuela Porfiria did this or that. Ask if its okay to
tape the conversation so you can concentrate on just have a conversation
instead of writing everything down real fast. Try to get your mom and

Wow she sounds like a wonderfully experienced in Genealogy person. . .

Can you ask her some questions for me?

1) Colotlan's records keep saying from the diocese of Zacatecas. I don't
get this since its my understanding that it is the diocese of Guadalajara.
Could this possibly mean that it used to be of Zacatecas and now is of Guadalajara?
Or that in the days when the boundarys for the Estados were different so
was the diocese? If it used to be of Zacatecas and now is of Guadalajara
would the diocese records would they have been moved to Guadalajara or is
it possible that they are still hidden away in Zacatecas someplace?

2) Also I was hoping she might give me some thoughts on the duplications
of years covered in certain films from Guadalajara. For example there are
some single years that are covered by 4 different films. Also there are some
films that cover the same time periods: for example lets say your looking
for the 1685 time period. In this short list of the over 700 films available
on Matrimonios you see that the time period is covered several times. Is
it just hit or miss and you have to search each of the films? I guess I'd
just like a few words on what her thoughts are about why different groups
of years are covered on films but they seem to be covering the same years?:

Anybody Got Some Ideas???

Joseph,
I think your idea is a good one. Some suggestions I would make:
don't add information that can be found somewhere else (for example
the source list of films for a particular region off the LDS catalog
could be added as a link instead). The link would take up a lot less
space and when the LDS catalog is updated our list would be out of
date. The ancestry reports can be exported to .rtf (rich text
format) extensions. rtf files take up less space than word documents
and are compatible with more applications than are word documents.
You also don't have to worry about members not being able to access a
word document because they are running an older version of Word or
don't have Word at all.

Another person who can help the group with dispensas is my friend,
Nadine Vásquez. Unfortunately, I can't ask her to join the group
because she doesn't use a computer. However, she co-authored a book
on Dispensas Matrimoniales and is a wealth of information on that
subject and Mexican genealogy in general. She's been doing genealogy
research since 1964.

My great-grandparents were:

One of their children was:
1) Porfiria Rosales (my grandmother), dob: 9-16-1905 place of birth

I have interviewed my mother and aunts all they remember was they
called Tomasita "Ama Tomasita". They aren't even sure if Rosendo was
born in Brownsville or in Mx. But they do know he was raised in
Brownsville,Tx. Without someone reconnizing these names I feel thats
as far as I can go on my mothers side of the family, on both her
father and mothers side

Yes I use the LDS Family
Search page for my research?
As for FHC's? no I don't, I have no any idea what this is.

About a 2 yrs ago I also found this information when I asked my mom
and aunts if Tomasita Villegas went by the name of Prudenciana. They
didn't know and or have any idea. Which is why I don't know if the
following person is them or not.
Since then I have been at a stand still.

Anybody Got Some Ideas???

So far I love this group. It seems in time as we all get things sorted
out and we see who everyone is looking for we will kind of keep an eye
out for the various relatives we're looking for. If nothing else its a
start.

But at this time the 20 megabytes we're allowed in the files section is
at 13 megabytes used. that means we'll be out of room in that area soon.

I know I can trim some of the stuff in there but that won't amount to much.

I was thinking that some of that stuff could be put on some of these
free websites that you can get. Then we could just put a link to the
various peoples genealogy lines. Maybe if you all have unused website
space you could put your personal genealogy info on it and then we can
just link to that section. . .

. . .I don't know

thats why I'm writing. Do any of you all have any ideas. Its just that
I'm thinking that maybe we might get another 5, 10 or even 20 more
people to join and once everybody puts there info in we'll be way over
the limit. . .so the time to figure this out is now before we get there.

any ideas appreciated,

jp

Hispanic Roots by George Ryskamp

Every serious hispanic genealogy researcher needs to own a copy of this book.
. .hey what do I know there very well could be and probably are better books
out there, but this book it pretty dog gone good. . .I mean GOOD!

it goes into a lot of details about baptism marriage death and other documents
we are using. It gives great key words and phrases found in them and helps
to abstract the information from them.

I've put the Matrimonio Dispensas section in the files section and also the
Table of Contents to the book.

joseph

ps: to answer you directly sometimes they are in the Matrimonio Informacion
films or you might have to get films from the Diocese. . .Guadalajara.

got more questions please ask. . .hey I probably won't know the answer but
that will provide the motivation to look for the answer.

Hi Joseph, Juan Jose Leanos was married to Tomasa Amaya. I looked at
Josefa Leanos' marriage certificate once again. Sorry that I haven't
located Juan's marriage certificate yet. Although Guillermo Villegas who
married Josefa Leanos was born in Colotlan, his marriage took place in
Tabasco, Zacatecas.
