only requirement is that you have compiled at least 4 generations of your
family history. But I think this starts with you as the first generation. 
We might be able to find that we are related genetically even if we can't
prove it genealogically.

Sorry about being so basic, but I just learned this and who knows but some

Just a message of encouragement. what I've been doing is spending my
weekends on the telephone cold calling my different surnames asking if
they might have come from the Santa Maria de Los Angeles/Colotlan,
Jalisco area. Back about 3 months ago I called all the Leaños in El Paso
(8 total) the very first one told me that they came from Jalisco and to
call his relative for more info. I called and it turned out that they
came from the Santa Maria area. It also turned out that of the 6 people
comprising his parents and grandparents that these names were there:
Leaños, Rivas, Castañeda's and Rodarte. The next day I got busy and in a
span of about 5 hours managed to trace the Leaños line back 5
generations. . .but I just could see any connection to our families. I
studied their line a little more that week and sent them what I found. I
didn't hear from them and kind of lost touch with them for a while and
just recently recontacted these family but not the exact person I was
talking to the time before. They told me that the other person I talked
to never shared any of the info I sent them so I told them I would
resent it. They told me they had been interested in searching out the
family roots.

. . .anyway as I was getting the info together to send to them I
realized that I had new information that I hadn't previous had when I
did the original study on their line. Carol Turner and her Dad
graciously provided me with a marriage record for my GGGG grandfather
Miguel Leaños and Maria Ignacia del Muro. Miguel's parents were Juan
Jose Leaños and Maria Antonia Ledesma. As I restudied the info before
sending it off to them in El Paso I found this couple. . .I couldn't
believe it.

I haven't seen the film, actually I haven't seen anything from Zacatecas
yet. I don't recall seeing this info you sent either. I'll get to it one
day soon I hope. thanks and I'll just continue sitting on the edge of my
seat a little while longer.

Oh this genealogy stuff sure can be exciting and yet so frustrating. I'd
love to make a tie into some of you all. But yet again it isn't
happening. I am intrigued by one of the Castañedas in AJ's genealogy.

(I should also explain that I'm not 100% sure that this is a relative,

Castañeda. On some of the records it refers to him as just Jose Diaz and
one refers to him as Francisco Diaz possibly unless its another person
married to another Concepsion Castañeda having another child names
Vicente Ferrer Diaz (I'm pretty sure there was a Josse Vicente and a
Vicente Ferrer). . .I don't know it is confusing and best left alone for
a bit until more informacion is found that would allow for more accurate
processing).

The familes in Tepechitlan are Correas, Miramontes, Munos, Ulloa, and 
Valdez.  I do have one Castaneda born/registered in Tepechitlan but 
the majority of them are in Tlaltenango De Sanchez Roman and 
Atolinga, which isn't that far from Tepechitlan since the families I 
listed above are also from Tlaltenango.  My Luna family is mainly 
from Tlaltenango and Momax.

I will post a file for my Castaneda family and Miramontes family.

password you choose (This part is critical!!!)

put the paper you wrote down your ID and Password in a safe place (don't
do like me and have to go hunting for those little scattered pieces of

After you've done this you'll have a Free Yahoo email address and account.

For ID I sometimes use my first name and zip code you decide whatever if
easy for you to remember.

Hola,

Yo me llamo Joseph Puentes. . .this group is for the serious
genealogical study of the Ranchos of Jalisco and Zacatecas. I understand
that we might all be at different levels of experience, but I hope we
all strive to be better in our knowledge and skills at using the
resources available to us in 2003 for the study of our Mexican Roots. I
said all that only to say that i hope that if any of you are doing
Genealogy by only trying to find others that have done the work and
incorporate it into your genealogy. . .well I hope you all take it a
step further and start doing some of your own research. Nothing wrong
with finding others who have done a lot of work and then somehow
crossing their path or tieing in but at the same time take that info and
work it a little more. There are always things that need to be
researched. I wish I had a team of 20 people that I could direct in the
study of my personal genealogy. I believe I could keep them busy if
money was no object.

Several people have joined in the last few days and if you have a chance
please introduce yourselves.

I think we would all appreciate an introduction that includes who your
are and what surnames your are researching in what specific areas. We
can compare information and try to make some connections. And if we
can't make connections maybe we can keep an eye out for one another if
we happen to see certain surnames or individuals as we do our own study.

You'll find a lot of files in the files section. a picture or two in the
picture section. and a lot of messages in the message section. o yes and
Maria Cortez has started a database that hopefully will be expanded as
time permits.

thanks and I'm copying the section of my introduction that I included in
my previous Introduction:

I have heard of the Rancho Los Reales, but I don't know where it is 
exactly.  I don't know if I have family from there.  There is a lot 
of Miramontes and Magallanes in the area of Zacatecas near Jalisco.  
The information I have on my Miramontes family starts about 1860 and 
earlier.  So I won't have information for you unless you have an 
individual born before 1860.  Does you father-in-law know the names 
of his grandparents?  Well I don't know how old your father-in-law 
is, but more than likely that would be information that I can find in 
my family if we were related.

I don't have Magallanes in my family, but I have done some 
researching on that name as well, for something else.  Anyway, if you 
find out the names of Victoria's parents, let me know and I could 
look those up as well in my records.

IN reading the list of names that you have searched for, I saw the name MIRAMONTES.  That is my last name now.  My father-in-law was from Zacatecas.  His parents names were Aurelino & Victoria (magallanes) Miramontes.  I believe the ranch they are from is named Los Reales. 

Just wondering if there is any connection here.

I have seen the census records for Colotlan 1930 and it has a lot
more information. So that is why I am wondering if there is more
information for this listed couple and their son. I have to look
through the rest and see if I recognize any other families.

Well I guess it is our turn for a formal introduction. Rich and I 
live in Rocklin, California which is about 35 miles NE of 
Sacramento.   Rich retired in 1999 after 35 years with HBFuller and I 
retired in 2001 after 10 years with Herman Miller.  We now spend our 
spare time stomping through cemeteries.  In the last 3 years, we have 
found my ancestors from my mother's side, in Loudoun, VA, Somerset, 
PA, Kalamazoo, MI, Beatrice, NE and Wickenburg, AZ.  One of these 
days we will get down to Jalisco, and Zacatecas, Mex.

Rich and I started on his genealogy in the mid 70's.  Fortunately we 
were able to start while his parents were still alive.  The 
information received then gave us a good basis to start with.   At 
that time everything was done by hand so listing all those siblings 
of his parents took awhile.  Both his parents had at least 12 
brothers and sisters.  Currently he still has two aunts, one from 
each of his parents still living within 100 miles of where we live.

Fortunately, my twin started on my mother's side 30 years ago and has 
quite a lot done.  My father was born in Banamichi, in the Rio Sonora 
area of the state of Sonora, Mexico.  His father came from Italy. We 
have not had much success with the Sonoran records.  They are not as 
complete as Jalisco and Zacatecas and the handwriting is way worse if 
you can believe that.  We even have had better luck with the Italian 
research.

We have two children Rick 36, and Julie 35, both of them have 2 
children.  Both Rich and I were born and raised in the Bay Area, CA 
and we in turn raised our two in Fremont, East Bay Area.  In 1985, 
HBFuller moved it's location out to Roseville, CA abt 30 miles east 
of Sacramento and we followed.  Our daughter and her family also 
settled in Rocklin, CA.  
Rich's hobby is golf and his obsession is soccer.  He coached girls 
competitive youth soccer since 1976 and stopped in 2001.  25 years 
of  coaching.  He currently still referees High School level Soccer 
for Boys and Girls.  Our grand daughter Sarah just received a full 
soccer scholarship to Weber State, Ogden, UT (close to the SLC 
FHLibrary)  She will be there for 4 years or more.  We will be 
visiting her a lot in the next four years.  
I belong to the Roseville Genealogical Society and the Pioneer Quilt 
Guild.  Needless to say both of my main hobbies are very messy, and

I saw my Marques Family in the Census of Sauz de los Marquez that is 
posted in the files section.  It is on page one, first column, about 
half way down.  Dn. Felix Marquez (70), Da. Alvina Romero (65), and 
Torivio Marquez (34).  It's really exicting to see it.  Thanks for 
posting that resource.  But now I have a question for Joseph 
Puentes.  Is this the actual census or just the census index pages?  
I have seen the census records for Colotlan 1930 and it has a lot 

just a quick note before I run off to work.

a cousin of mine who used to work for the FBI was concerned about
Identity theft. Now I've gone ahead and removed all my PDF files from
the group and I'll repost them with with new ones that go from my
deceased grandparents back just so as we get more people in the group
I can say honestly to concerned relatives that i am not revealing any
"mothers maiden names" for any living relatives.

Something to think about and you all might consider this with regards
to info you've already posted and will in the future.

Okay the first step is to have the Address to the Family Search website:

once there we're going to have a look around and see there is a gold mine
of Genealogical information on the site. But today we're going to get specific
in what we're trying to do and that is find info on Jamay, Jalisco and where
"my local Family History Center is."



First of all I don't know where you live so I'll just show you how to use
the site so you can find the closest one.



After you bring: http://www.familysearch.org  up go to the right side of
the page and click on "Library."  Then click on "Family History Centers."
and fill in the info and hopefully there will be one close to you. Most larger
communities have them as there are several many hundreds or even thousands
around the states.



okay now back to how to find the Jamay info. Okay you can get back to the
home page and then click on "Library" again then click on "Family History
Library Catalog."  From there on this page you'll see the bars on the right
click on the "Place" one. Then you enter Jamay and it will take you to some
choices. pick Jamay Jalisco and then click on Census if you want to look
at that info or on church records if you want to find that info. (Note up
at the top there is place you can click to "View Film notes" click this to
see what films are available for those areas).



>From the lists of films available you pick out the films that you think might
reveal info about your family. For example. You say your mother in law was
born in Jamay in 1939. I'd think that the Census Film that Patricia mentioned
would have her parents on it or other relatives but more specifically the
film "Bautismos de hijos legítimos
1934-1940 -  VAULT INTL Film [ 281866 ]" would or should or
possibly could include info on her, her parents and maybe (maybe not) her
grandparents. Info can be found also on the Padrinos and the name of the
specific rancho she was born in and maybe the time and day of birth. If you're

very nice maps showing the boundaries between the Estados.
