Are you sure it doesn't say *parvuloparbulo* and *parbula? *which would
mean "child/youth"?

Hello Juanita,

Re your side note it only states that they are "Ciudedanos de esta vila", doesn't give the name but the front of this book says "San Miguel en Mexquitic", probably the villa they are referring to. Also on the "Padrinos" he is Juan Esteban Quiros and his muger....

You have a similar problem that I am dealing with. My search is stopped at my 4X great grandfather Jose Maria Valdes. Which is the most common of names, as is your Jose Maria Hernandes. I'm sure, like me, you have found many almost identical records that seem to match all the names except for dates that don't make sense. All I can tell you in that regard is it happens a lot in my research because of the common names I'm working with and that it's is not too unusual. I have spent many hours correcting my tree due to these similarities.

Also, I'm not sure why you assume that the name Marmeto is a misspelling they do have some Marmeto's in family search.

Good Luck,

Barbara,

Thank you. I'm learning more each day in how to research properly and effectively. I assumed the name mareto was misspelled because I thought the other records for sillia hernandes was the one I was looking for which then meant the name was misspelled. Lol, I too have spend hours correcting my family tree. I too am stuck on the last Jose Maria Valdez. In the last record that I found I encountered my first wife with seemily no last name. I read that many times during those years the indios didn't have last names. I was exhuasted looking at that line so, I've moved on with the intention of going back later. Thank you for your support. I really appreciate it.

In order to determine if Marmeto is a rare Spanish surname I looked went to http://www.linajes.net/ and searched for it. It does not show up at that site so I did a search for the surname in familysearch.org without specifying a country. It shows up a lot in the Philippines. Then I specified Mexico where Marmeto shows up a few times. This surname most likely made it's way into Mexico from the Philippines.

In the second link it is Jose Marcelo and not Jose Marceto. Look closely at all of the letters l and t in the document. They are written differently. The l has a small line like a tail. The t has a a line going all the way through and much longer.

Thank you Armando,

I've only been seriously researching my family history for a few months and sometimes I find it quite daunting. I begin to question what I believe is a correct extraction and then the someone to tell me I'm on the right track.

Those tricky letters are sometimes frustrating and I start to doubt that what I deduced to be the spelling must be mispelled. And then there is those almost but not quite data that makes me crazy. Lol, but you guys are great and very helpful. I love seeing how your thought process goes to get the result. It is extremely helpfu. Thank you so much.

Los Senores de Zacatecas by Frederique Langue can be purchased through the Fondo de Cultura Economica online bookstore, which is listed in the Links section, under specialty bookstores.

You can also get the Miguel Caldera book there in Spanish as well as the "Breve Historia" series of books that have been published for each state, e.g. Breve Historia de Zacatecas, Breve Historia de Jalisco, etc.

Linda,

I just printed it after it finished downloading as a pdf. I didn't try to save it; it will print from the file if you click on the little icon that looks like a tiny picture of a printer. It took a long time to download, since I have only a really slow dial-up, but it printed out quickly after that.

After logging in to Nuestros Ranchos, go to the link:

Or go to Files - Books and Articles

You will see there are two files as attachments to that folder. The names are listed alphabetically with the first file A-L and the second L-Z.

You can rotate the document within Adobe. I suggest you save the file and then open it from your desktop as each one is 2MB...

If you are having trouble using the site, I suggest you download the Nuestros Ranchos User Guide which is available in the Files - References section.

I must have missed the previous announcement on NR on the movie, "For Greater Glory". I think that a well-made film's objective, whether historical, fictional, non-fictional or whatever, will usually stimulate the individual to seek more knowledge on the subject. Most films, in the space of 1-2 hours cannot tell the whole story on any subject and everything on tv or big screen should always be questioned on their facts. The important thing is that it does open you up to questions and to seek answers. Since I tend to be a visual person, I am so thankful to have anything on film that relates to my family and where they came from - it tends to make it more real for me! We are just so blessed these days have so many sources available to aide us in our search. Isn't this what we are doing on our ancestry search? We hear these fascinating stories from our family and friends and then it peaks our interest to know more, to know the truth, and it sends us on this quest for documented facts

I do wish movies would attempt to be closer to to the truth. It's also
unfortunate they didn't have more Mexicans in the cast since the movie is

Hi all:

I already saw the movie a pair of weeks ago since I live in Mexico. I think it's a good movie but I do agree that there are a lot of discrepancies between the movie and the real story.

First of all, I didn't like that the sound is in English with Spanish subtitles, I know it was done with the purpose of having a greater audience in foreign countries and in general I prefer the original sound of American movies but at this first point I don't feel really connected with the environment of the picture, Mexican farmers speaking English at that time in Mexico is not credible. English speakers should do an effort by hearing the movie in Spanish and reading English subtitles.

Secondly, one of the facts I'm very sure that had a great diference from the real life was the scene where the priest José María Robles is hung and killed in the church. The real story that was passed by my family and is found in the Vatican archive during the process of canonization is that when the

Actor Andy Garcia joined Fox & Friends a few days ago to talk about his new movie, ‘For Greater Glory.’ In the film, he plays a general who gets recruited by the Cristero Army to help the Mexican citizens fight for religious freedom.

It’s based on true events that took place in the 1920s where 90,000 people died fighting over the course of three years.

Film opens in theaters on June 1st (already showing in Mexico).

For simple interpretation, google "haplogroup" and the one you belong (do separate searches for YDNA and mtDNA) and go to the Wikipedia result you get from the search.

Emilie,

Nobody's email is being hacked. The from email address is being changed by spammers in order to make it look like the email is from someone you know. This is called spoofing. The password to a person's email account is not needed to spoof. It is the equivalent of putting a false return address on regular mail. However, it is likely that a computer that has those email addresses had a bot or a virus installed on their computer which then steals the email addresses from the infected computer and sends out the spam. You can read more about that by googling "email spoofing".

The problem with us not getting email notifications is most likely due to a server problem. Since they do not charge us for membership to this website I believe the webmaster volunteers his time. He probably tries to fix it more often than we notice.

I apologize to the group for the occasional messages that get through. It is
a tricky situation since those messages mainly concern people whose email
addresses get hijacked and the hijackers start sending out their SPAM to

Asunto: [Nuestros Ranchos] Not Receiving Posts

I am experiencing the same problem of not receiving very many e-mails. I had
posted a question about Tlaltenango a couple of days ago and didn't see any
responses. I thought perhaps the nature of the group had changed and people
were not as helpful as they used to be. Then, I just checked the website and
saw 4 people offered helpful comments. Thank you all who posted and I hope
the problem gets fixed. I have a lot of questions these days regarding
Zacatecas.

In researching the offspring of Cristobal Mercado y Angela De Thorrez (6th ggparents) I located a marriage record for their daughter Angela Mercado.

Many of the words in this document are proving to be a challenge for me.  I would appreciate your help with the translation...

Comentario

Thank you Alicia,

This was the first time I viewed Cuquio, Jalisco records...the reference to Juana Carrillo caught my eye, thought that maybe it was a connection with you or your husband's ancestry.

The De Lissalde surname was also a first for me.

Do you have Nochistlan ancestors? If so, what surnames appear in your ancestry ?

I think I recall you saying something about Aguirre/s from Nochistlan...

Once again Thank you,
Pat

There are a number of good histories of Mexico and the Spanish conquest/colonial efforts in the New World that will likely answer your questions.

Here are two:

Michael Meyer & William Sherman, "The Course of Mexican History," 5th edition (1995).

Hugh Thomas, "The Golden Empire: Spain Charles V, and the Creation of America," (2010).

A good public library should have at least the first of these, and likely both.

Hi George, I reserved the book, "Retornos de Espana" from the Library. I could not believe how many people were signed up for it---only one available for this area! Thank you for the lead.

Also thank you for the reference of the above two books on the history of Mexico.
I will reserve from local library. Your help greatly appreciated.

Hello Researchers,

Last night I tried to review the following microfilm: Tlaltenango de Sanchez Roman, Zacatecas, Matrimonios 1626-1723. I am disappointed in that the handwriting is almost illegible for the late 1620's (I don't know about the rest of the microfilm because I did not get far). Do these entries appear on the IGI? And are there any transcriptions or translations available of the records?

Thank you so much,

Alice

Comentario

It is very difficult to read. Ancestry.com used to offer tips on how to read Spanish old-style writing (maybe they still do). I just look/scan at the important parts of the entry and with experience, you begin to recognize the words. Remember that it was customary then to use a lot of abbreviations of names and used variations of spelling (such as local customs.

WHAT TO BE ALERT TO: Expect many variations of name spellings.
"b" can be "v", i.e. Baldez for Valdez, Vanuelos for Banuelos, Vorrego for Borrego, Chabes for Chavez
"s" can be "c" or a “z“, i.e. Senteno, Centeno, Zenteno or Cilla for Silla
“j” can be “x”, Jimenez, Ximenez, Jaime Xaime, Javier, Xavier

“r” can be “rr”, Carrillo, Carillo, Cariyo,

“t’” is written the same height as the other letters and can be mistaken for an “r” or “c”
“y” is often a “ll” or even an “i“, i.e. Ayala, Allala, Mayorga, Maiorga, Montoya, Montolla

in many parishes the local custom uses the “ph” for “f” i.e., Phelipe for Felipe or Josepha for

Comentario

These early Zacatecas records are a real challenge!

The IGI is searchable from the Family Search website, unfortunately Tlaltenango marriages are available only from 1705, although the earlier ones have apparently been extracted according to the Parish Register index.

Joseph's guidance is very useful, but it will take some time to get used to the handwriting.

The more time you spend with these records, the better you will be able to discern what is written.

Hello Juanita,

As Armando stated there are no other names than the married couple and their parents. Again, the phrase you were wondering about just meant they were married in front of the church. What I have found to be helpful when I don't quite understand the phrases or terminology of the record I'm researching, is to look at some of the other records before and after the one I'm interested in. Sometimes they're a little clearer and you may either read them a bit easier or you will see that they are using the same phrases which just means it some what of a "form" with the same information, just the names change.

Hope that helps,
Barbara

Hello Alicia and Juanita

Thank you so much. This time I am researching about two lines.

The Gonzalez Dominguez family. I know that there is an entire chapter for the descendants of Bernardo Gonzalez Dominguez and Florencia Yanez. I am trying to connect my line to them. There is a Luis Gonzalez Dominguez married to Ana Rodriguez and want to know if they had a son also named Luis Gonzalez, married to Maria Delgadillo. Their daughter Ana Gonzalez is my ancestor.

The other line is Maria Rubio married to Joseph Cordero about 1680. I think she could be part of the Gonzalez Rubio family.

Thank you so much again. I am a newbie on Altos genealogy but have plenty of information on Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and Tamaulipas. If someday you need anything please let me know.

Alejandro.

Hi Alicia,

My family was in Tepatitlan in the early 1700's. Is there anything in your book that can tell me the ancestry of Joaquin Esteban Romero y Chavez and his wife Antonia Gomez Hurtado de Mendoza? All their children were born in Tepatitlan as were their descendants down to my father, Ramon Romero. I haven't been able to find where Joaquin and Antonia came from and when and who their ancestors were.

Thank you for any help you may be able to give me.

Ed, I have 4 Caldera ancestors even though 2 go to the same ancestors, Jose Antonio del Carmel Caldera (abt 1735) and Ana de la Trinidad Garcia and also Jose Andres Caldera (abt 1720) and Catarina Gertrudis de la Cueva.  I also have Leonarda Caldera (abt 1710) and Francisco Reveles but have not been able to find anything on them. so I also have been trying to link them since they are listed as Espanol even though we know they were Mestiso's. Susan Leniski has submitted her work to Nuestrosranchos and what I have comes mostly from her research.
Like you I did purchase and read the Powell book.

I don't read Spanish well but Mr. Cabral did try to help me but the language barrier was too great since he speaks no English. I hope you are able to uncover something that helps me link my Caldera ancestors together.

Thanks, Linda. I read Spanish moderately well so I will continue to search and will let you know if I find more about the Cabral family in Spanish sources.

I do have a "typo" of my own in my opening remarks. It should read that Miguel Caldera (b. 1548) never married.

After reading the Powell book on Miguel Caldera I was trying to make the link between my de la Torre ancestors and Miguel since Miguel's illegitimate (and only) daughter married Juan de la Torre. However, as I thought about it more given all the intermarriages, I entertained the possibility that I might have a number of ancestral lines that go back to Miguel: Cabral, de la Torre, de Olague, Muñoz, etc. I seemingly can't investigate one line without finding another interconnected family in the same circle, so to speak. We'll see what turns out. I had the same issues with my de los Santos Coy and de la Garza Falcon family lines---they all wound up back to the same one or two families in Saltillo and Monterrey, ~1600

So this is the wedding date for your ancestors, Refugio Jauregui and Maria Encarnacion Losano, 18 Sept, 1851:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JZXF-4MP

This is the marriage record for Jose Refugio Jaurequi and Maria Encarnacion Losano, bottom right hand corner from El Salto. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15191-45194-11?cc=1410092&wc…

This was his second marriage, his first was to Maria Victoriana Mejia. This marriage records shows that there was a dispensation for the marriage of Jose Refugio Jauregui and Maria Encarnacion Losano. You may want to check on the marriage dispensation and it may have additional information as to the origins of the parents of the bride and the groom.

Armando,

I have gathered lots of information on this individual Jose Del Refugio Jauregui.
He was married three times first marriage with Maria Casimira Perez on November 26 1882 they had approx 9 kids all born in Nochistlan.Second marriage was with Maria Victoriana Meji on May 6 1837 in Nochistlan and they had around 8 children.Last wife which whom i descend from Maria Encarnacion Lozano married on september 18 1851 in Nochistlan. Unfortunately all these documents did not help locate Jose Del Refugios grandparents what can I do next Armando?

Comentario

Abram,

The next step is to find all of the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, of Pioquinto Jáuregui, and their marriages to see if there is a mention of a dispensa. If there is then you can try and find the ancestors of the spouse. This might give you at least a sibling of Pioquinto which could lead to his parents.

You should also keep your Geneanet.org tree updated. I might be able to find something if you do that with links to the each document you find. You can email me directly once you update it.

Armando

Comentario

Here is an example - Francisco Borja Gómez had a dispensa de cuarto grado de afinidad for his marriage on 25 de agosto 1801 to María Juliana de los Dolores Jáuregui Yañez https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-15186-10456-90?cc=1410092&wc… who was probably related to the first wife of Francisco Borja, María Josefa Dominga Cervantes Ulloa the daughter of José Julián Cervantes & Barbara de Ulloa. Now you have to find the grandparents of María Josefa Dominga Cervantes Ulloa or the dispensa. Neither task is easy, but finding the dispensa is most likely harder.

Armando

Comentario

What is the document you are basing that info on? Always provide sources when giving such information. Always cite the source in your online tree also. Have you updated Geneanet?

If your source is good then you also have to find the great-grandparents (bisabuelos) and then the tatarabuelos of María Josefa Dominga Cervantes Ulloa. Her tatarabuelos should also be the tatarabuelos of María Juliana de los Dolores Jáuregui Yañez which would be the bisabuelos of Pioquinto Jáuregui or María Dolores Yañez. Then I'll let you know the next steps after that.

I am not getting emails from Nuestros Ranchos because of trouble with the website. When you post here email me directly if you would like me to see the posts sooner than I normally would see them.

It is important to differentiate between afinidad and consanguinidad when
it comes to dispensas. The dispensa was for afinidad. This most likely
means the bride, María Encarnación Lozano, was related to the first wife,
María Victoriana Mejia. He may be able to find their blood relationship
through the birth and marriage records available instead of having to go
search for the dispensa.

Ever since I was a kid, I have always been given this food to eat which is called, "Gorda"

To me, it looks like what folks from Jalpa, Zac refer to as a "gordita." The fillings varied, from only lard, to beans + lettuce + cheese and some kind of meat (and of course home-made chile!). I'm not sure of its origins, but remember that corn (and hence tortillas) is a native plant so Gordas/Gorditas probably originated in Mexico. As for Atole Blanco, we never added the "blanco" because that was the only type we ever had.

Both are pretty common in East LA and other parts of Southern California.

I've seen slight variations on these, such as the "sopes" (Gorditas) and "champurrado" (atole).
