It would be very cool if members of the group were interested in
travelling to Mex. to visit some of these areas and get more
information. I wanted to go very badly last year, but found that I
would have to go it alone.  Is there anyone else out there who is in
this situation?

I know this website is for Cuba but there are a lot of resources
available through this site namely people and groups that have studied
this topic in depth and might be a good source to lead you to the
information you seek. If you find more info please post it to ranchos.

Here I go again with the questions but no one that I have spoken to 
has been able to help thus far.  I understand that there were at 
least two ports of entry in Mexico back in the early 1800's, one was 
in Vera Cruz and the other was Tampico. Quien Sabe?  Certainly there 
must have been a trail of paper work MANIFESTS PASSENGER LISTS 
BIRTHS AND DEATHS for the ships. BUT WHERE ARE THEY? I understand 
that there is a site in Spain where passengers would 
register "Indice de las Indias"  How does one go about getting 
information at this site, where do I begin? or is there a place in 
Mexico????

Well I guess everyone is noticing that I've discoved the UC Berkeley
library's online catalog. UC Berkeley has a fabulous collect of
materials for all three of our target area states and Mexico in general.
I'd suggest you all spend sometime cruising around their catalog.

Again if any of you feel that your inbox is starting to get cluttered
then either go to Yahoo and change your subsciption from individual
emails to the Digest version or let me know and I'll do it for you.

I wished I lived close enough to go to the Bancroft Library often. I
would go there and to SLC as often as I could.

I discussed genes with another genealogy group (Pureto Rican) earlier today. I am simply copying it and forwarding it to you and the group. It is self-explanatory. Phenotype (what it looks like) and genotype (what the genes are) are two different things.

As advertised, the mtDNA test is DNA check on your mother’s mother’s mother’s....mother’s ancestry. Recently, even the most “European” (read white) of South American countries, Argentina, has shown that approximately 90% of mtDNA is Indian. The paternal, Y-DNA, is largely European. The inference is clear. The male Europeans came and the Native American Indian females bore. Yes, there are a lot of reasons for this: conquest, infectious disease, food, social issue, etc.



Your mtDNA may be Indian (four major types in all the Americas) and may not necessarily answer the questions you may have. I believe that there are on-going studies in Puerto Rico looking into this mtDNA issue. See http://www.centrelink.org/KearnsDNA.html for a recent study on Puerto Rican DNA. Your father’s (or brother’s) Y-DNA may give you a better idea of where your (paternal) ancestors were from. Obviously, since you are female, you do not have Y-DNA. See http://www.familytreedna.com/ for more details on DNA.



By the way, my mtDNA is Native American Indian and my Y-DNA is European, possibly Basque. In fact, Ron Rodriguez and I share a basic Y-DNA pattern, although not enough to make us related.

ps: If anyone is getting overwhelmed by the recent increase in messages
from the group I just wanted to say that putting your subscription into
the Digest mode is an option. That way instead of getting each
individual email in real time you would get one large email with all of
that days discussion included. The latter makes it easier to keep things
together, but you'll be about a day behind in the conversation. Just an
option
