HELLO EVERYONE:

Thank you to all those people who added themselves to the new 
database table.  For those of you who haven't done so yet, it's not 
too late...feel free to add yourself at any time...

I think this will be the fastest way for new arrivals to the group to 
become acquainted with the group members and for us to keep tract of 
common surnames/familes amongest us.

I am in no way an expert...but just a little bit of history:

In the mid 1800's there was a large migration of Irish to the U.S.  
Since these Irishman were the new arrivals they were on the 'outs' 
and treated poorly.  They were harrased for being poor, uneducated, 
and Catholic.  As people were imigrating West to the new 
territories/states entering the Union, some of the Irish went South-
West into Mexico since they identified with the Catholic people in 
Mexico.

There is a movie I saw recently called "One Man's Hero" starring Tom 
Berenger.  This is taken from the Internet Movie Database:

"One Man's Hero" tells the little-known story of the "St. Patrick's 
Brigade" or "San Patricios," a group of Irish immigrants who deserted 
to Mexico after encountering religious and ethnic prejudice in the

the personal story of John Riley, an Irishman who had been a seargent 
in the American Army who leads the brigade, as he leads his men in 
battle and struggles with authorities on both sides of the border.

Hi all,

I've been struggling for months to decipher a word on
the attached 1880 Census Form.  Specifically, I cannot
tell what the country of origin is for the mother of
Thomas (Tomas) Hale, my GGG Grandfather.

According to family history, he was born in Monterrey,
Nuevo Leon to Irish-born parents.  I don't know why or
how they ended up in Mexico, or even his parents names
or where in Ireland they were from. 

I realize this is specific to Nuevo Leon, not a state
relevant to this listserve, but I still hope someone
with a sharper eye than my own can tell me what the
word is.

On the form, I can make out that his father was born
in Ireland but I have no idea what the word is for his
mother's country of origin. This part is not aligned
with his name, but it most certainly applies to him
(see the attached form to see what I mean) 

Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
