Fernández was given penance of 47,080 maravedis. Sometimes the Inquisition would give a financial penalty as penance, but the reconciled person could not count on the Inquisition accepting it.

Death registration

Hi everyone,

If there is a death registration there would also exist a church death document correct?

Comments

Comment

I have not ever found a death record, comparable to a civil record. However, it is normal for there to be church records of "sepultura eclesiástica," which may or may not give any indication of the death date.

Saludos Erik,

For those who use ancestry, I just reached out to them and they are having issues with hyperlinks not posting correctly. They said they are "on it"

I began using the "Other Information" box to post links for now till the issue is solved. It is above the "Web Address" box if this helps.

I sourced at least 50-60 links last night from familysearch.com and the hyperlinks are all broken. This is disappointing.

Barthola Flores de la Torre (married to Pedro Bañuelos Benavides)

Hi,

I have been working on my tree for a while, but I got a little stuck with Barthola Flores de la Torre (married in aprox. 1711 to Pedro Bañuelos).

Comments

Comment

I think the document does say her age, if I recall correctly. I believe she was in her early 30s at the time. It never says which Hernan Flores de la Torre is the father, so all we can safely assume is that Hernan Flores de la Torre and Ana de Sandi are grandparents or great grandparents. There's Hernan Flores de la Torre y Sandi and another Hernan Flores de la Torre who is the son of Luis Flores de la Torre y Sandi (I don't have the name of Luis' wife. I've seen a Maria Delgadillo but no sources.) I really wish people wouldn't add parents without sources. I know linking sources is time consuming, but at least put a note giving us a clue!

Re: <>

My last known Banuelos ancestor is Juan Banuelos, who was married to Maria Ignez Muñoz. Both date back to the late 1600's and early 1700's. According to your data, Juan's father was Dionisio Banuelos, whose name comes up repeatedly in my review of the church records from Mezquitic (Mesquitic) Jalisco. I suspect these are the same people. In reviewing the data from Mezquitic, it is clear that the Banuelos families had a huge number of offspring, so it is no wonder that there are a largne number of people who may be related to the Banuelos mentioned above.

I do have a couple of questions however. Can you give me further data on your information? That is, can you tell me where to look that would verify what Mr. Valdes and Mr. de la Torre have told you about Dionisio Banuelos, the last known Banuelos? I am familiar with Mr. de la Torre as a genealogist but would like a primary source, rather than a secondary oral one.

The second question, if not the more interesting one, is one relates to the wife of Dionisio Banuelos, i.e. Catalina de Lamas. Is the latter person's apellido Lamas or Llamas. In reviewing Ancestry.com the above mentioned Salvador Cabral Valdes has made mention of the Llamas, not Lamas, of Jerez Zacatecas, see http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.mexico.zacatecas/832.1.3/…. Again, are the Lamas the same as the Llamas?

I am not trying to be difficult but only trying to obtain more information and verify old.

Thank you,

Ed Serros

It has been awhile since I followed up on this Banuelos line. Given the previous discussions, there appears to be quite a number of Banuelos descendants from the Jerez/Monte Escobedo/Rio Atoloque who are on this board. The last major discussion was this link http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/18016.

I believe I might have been able to extend the Banuelos tree described in the link above back to Diego Temino de Banuelos and Baltasar Temino de Banuelos. See my Banuelos_092019 pdf in my genealogy files. I believe the first three generations are fairly solid and the subsequent generations starting with Dionicio Banuelos and Catalina de Lamas are solid, as discussed in the above link. The major question is whether the DIego Banuelos and Maria Benavides y Delgado line is correct. It is literally the missing link.

I put this out not as Gospel but simply as a source of discussion/debate. I am hesitant to unequivocally state this Banuelos line (which is my line too) goes back to

Comment

I have a few links I saved from years back. I did not see Diego Banuelos in the "Outline Descendant Report for Dionisio Banuelos" from one of the original posts. Some of the links below show Diego Banuelos' parents as Dionisio Banuelos and Catalina Llamas. Diego Banuelos Defuncion clearly states "quintas nupcias" which has him married five times. It was very challenging to research this line given the many Banuelos' last name. Anyway, I attached the marriage links I believe to belong to Diego Banuelos. If you read the marriage record, some give clues of the previous marriage which helps.

I descend from Diego de Banuelos and Maria de Benavides y Delgado through their daughter Maria (cc. Nicolas Sanchez Castellanos) and I THINK their son Pedro (cc. Bartola Flores - an illegitimate child of one of the Hernan Flores de la Torres)

I've spent a lot of time with the Teul baptism film and I can say that Diego and Maria's daughter Leonor (cc.

It looks to me like Diego Banuelos may have remarried to an Isabel Gonzalez/Delgado after Maria Benavides' death. I don't have all my links in front of me, but they start having children in the early 1660s - a little too young to be Diego Banuelos y Benavides (Diego and Maria's son b. 1648 I believe)

Diego and Isabel have a son Antonio who marries in Tlatlenango in 1686

There was also a Baltazar Banuelos who married Josefa Beruman in Tlaltenango 1685. He says he's from the City of Zacatecas and the natural son of a Diego Banuelos, deceased, and an Isabel de Salazar

Comment

Hello,
I found another child of theirs.
My 9th great grandmother is María Bañuelos Benavides bap. 11/11/1652 in Teul.

Record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NXRS-JMF
She married Nicolas Sanchez Castellanos bal. 9/20/1643 in Tlaltenango, son of Tomasina de Haro cc Juan Sánchez Castellano.

With all the Diego’s and Bañuelos, Sadly i cannot find proof of who the parents of Diego Bañuelos cc María Benavides are. I think Dionisio makes sense but there are a few possibilities.
Maven.

Comment

I'm thinking leonicio banuelos and leonor reyes are seperate people/couple than dionisio banuelos/leonor castillo. the main reason why i believe this is because diego was born in 1630's which makes the latter couple too old to be his parents. i'm thinking leonciio/dionisio who married leonor reyes is either a son of nephew of the one who married leonor castillo

Hi Andrea,
I have in my tree Barthola Flores de la Torre and Pedro Bañuelos too, according to their marriage dispense she was the daughter of an indigenous woman named Maria Magdalena and of Hernan Flores de la Torre... I cannot find any other document to confirm which Hernan Flores de la Torre is... or who are her grandparents... I think she was from Mezquituta but I have not been able to find any information ...
Do you have any information regarding this or idea where I could find it?

Term: Morisca

Hello, is anyone familiar with the term "Morisca'? I believe it appears after the daughter and mother's name on Pasquela Prudencia's 1749 San Luis Potosi birth record on the link listed below.

It is a good exercise to take the "casts" with a grain of salt, this terms were, in real life very loosely used in colonial México, thus you will see for example that among siblings there could be different casts, or very often the word "mulato" for actual "meztiso" people. etc.

Although Moro refers originally to an African Muslim, in my personal point of view, I found that "morisco" was likely used to denote a child of darker skin color but not dark enough to be a "mulato" probably similar to what we call today "trigueño", this regardless of the actual ethical background.

The terms used for castes in Spain differed from those used in the Colonies. While in Spain, “Morisca/o” meant “Muslim,” in Mexico, it was used for a person with one European parent (white) and one Mulato parent (of European and African parentage). Basically, a child with 3 White grandparents and 1 Black grandparent. But as RJQ mentions, the caste system was ambiguous and arbitrary.

Literal transcript without abbreviations plus capital letters. In case you need the other little details besides what Mr. Ricci has mentioned.

Not sure if the brides mother's last name is "peres" or "lares". probably the former.

This is a marriage record For Blas Madera and María Lorenza. It says that he is a widower and that his parents are Joseph Madera and Josepha Velasquez. It seems that they initially forgot to name the parents of Maria Lorenza (Magdalena or Magallanes)

Genealogical Coin Collecting

I visited my parents for christmas and my dad happened to be doing inventory on his massive coin collection. For the first time ever I saw it in its entirety.

I had significant grandparents born and another pair married in 1793 in Zacatecas. I was able to find a 1793 piece of 8 that was minted in Zacatecas. I find it interesting to hold in my hand something that my ancestors might have held in their hands and used in exchange for goods.

Yea I wish I did. I have from 1730s and later. Before that they were "cob" coins. I don't know enough about those yet to make an educated purchase but they are on my radar!

Comment

The 8 reales coin was referred to as a “piece of 8” because it was divided into 8 parts, or bits. The coins were 1, 2, 4, and of course 8 reales. These coins also circulated widely in Colonial American, and around the world. The two reales coin was equivalent to 25¢, hence the term 2 bits. 50¢ was 4 reales, or 4 bits.

Comment

Thanks for the info! I've got maybe 30 or so of the coins (1/2 real - 8 reales) now ranging from 1730-1820. According to an inflation calculator, the 4 reales is about $20 in todays dollars. Not a bad coin!

Comment

The coins of Mexico are fascinating, and a mirror of its history. They begin not too long after Cortes. If you have any from the 1500s, they are real treasures!

Ethics and Geneaology

Hello,

I personally would not object to someone hundreds/thousands of years from now performing DNA tests on my bones (well sorry but I plan on being cremated). Just saying that it would be so interesting to me if I could find an ancestors tomb and be able to perfom a DNA test on them and compare it to my DNA test. So if you find projects or initiatives that are taking this approach please email me as I'd be interested in their results Joseph Puentes makas@nc.rr.com

Question about geneology of Jalisco, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes

My question is about what provinces to be included in the geneology of Nuestros Ranchos.

Comments

Comment

If someone applies to the group and they are researching Nayarit and/or Colima I accept them into the group. If someone even suspects their roots might come from Jalisco, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Nayarit and/or Colima I accept them into the group as long as they focus on our area of research. Having said that I don't interfere with the discussion unless I see it is causing a problem.

Comment

Many good points have been made regarding how jurisdictions changed over time. One other point I'd like to make is that we sometimes underestimate/forget how mobile our ancestors really were. I have found many a family that stayed for generations in one single place while other families frequently settled in one place than later migrated to another place within the same or subsequent generations. In my case, had I just focused my genealogical research to just Jalisco records, I would have missed out on the true origins of some of my ancestors who migrated from Spain -> Michoacan -> Jalisco, etc.

Comment

That's true about the mobility, and that's why as long as there is a connection to the 3 states, I've understood that it's fine to post. I am a moderator here, and I very rarely delete, since so many discussions are so fruitful.

Comment

The founder of this group decided that NR should focus on only these 3 states for the site. It has been this way from the beginning, to keep the attention focused on the genealogical interests of this area. Unless he decides to change his mind, we will stay focused. There are other areas of Mexico/New Spain that have special genealogy groups for them, so one could go there or start another site, I suppose.

Comment

What Rosalinda says in her post is all true. I just want to add that in my experience the NR community tends to be more inclusive in scope rather than exclusive. If one searches the NR website using the keywords Michoacan, Guanajuato, Nayarit, or Colima, for instance, one can see that there are many, many posts that fall outside of NR’s stated geographic focus. (A search of the keyword Texas shows 55 pages of results!)

It could be that in practice the focus is broader because of the fact that various family lines can be traced to places that are outside of the boundaries of the modern Mexican states of Jalisco, Zacatecas and Aguascalientes. Also, as Antonio points out in the original post, it could be because the current boundaries of the above mentioned states do not correspond exactly with the boundaries of the historic administrative entities that came before them. Even the modern boundaries can be problematic. One has to remember that Jalisco has been partitioned at least once

Comment

Thanks. Yes, I agree with you-- in practice, it has not been so clear cut, and I think Joseph's attitude is that as long as there is a connection, tenuous it may be, to Aguascalientes, Jalisco, and Zacatecas, it's fine. However, to remove that parameter overall could mean more moderation and attention is needed for the website, when there are few volunteers for such tasks.

I don't think Joseph's expectation is too much, considering he is the founder, and he's always been generous. I just don't want a free-for-all where people post everything and anything (I am a moderator at Mexican Genealogy on Facebook, and it's a job to moderate it, and we have a team of volunteers there!).

New member introduction

Hello!

Welcome!

I just wanted to respond to one element of your message-- the Middle Eastern part. I had my brother take a YDNA test, and the result was J-M172, which has its ancient origins in the Fertile Crescent. My father's line is only traceable on paper to mid-1700s Michoacán, so I was surprised at that result. There could be a Jewish connection, or not-- there isn't really enough evidence either way, but whoever it was most likely went to Spain at some point, and from there, Mexico. We do have some Middle Eastern and Sephardic Jew that shows up in the ethnicity estimates.

Comment

Hey! Didn’t even get a notification for this. I just got back my FamilyTreeDNA test for my father, brother and I. We are also indeed also J-M172 as well. My paternal records hit a dead end in the 1700s too for my paternal line. Not sure what the deal is.

Comment

Yes, I wish I could trace it back more. His 2 or 3 distant matches are with men not with the same last name (Ruiz), and in fact, they are all matches outside of Mexico-- one with Cuba/Spain, another with Curacao, and another with Costa Rica. It's an intriguing result!

"Hazcata" by Colotlan

In the 23 Sep 1760 Colotlan baptism of Matheo (second from bottom right at https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9392-F9S3-KX?cc=1874591&wc=3J4B… ), his birth is placed at Hazcata.

Giving it just a quick look, the first thing it comes to my mind is "tlazcala" the "H" kind of resembles the "tl" in the word Colotlan at the beginning of the record, and what it looks like a "t" could also be a "l" at the last syllable. Thus maybe a town of that name within Colotlan? Just a thought on other possibles spellings.
