Joseph,

Below is a copy of what I found today on one of my ancestors in
Ancestry.com.  The original entry in Ancestry.com that I printed out
back in August 2004 said "Extracted from documents in the Archivo
General de Indias in Seville, copies of which are among the holdings of
the Family History Library in Salt Lake City".  Now I notice that this
entry has that sentence truncated after "copies of".  I wonder why they
did that?  Did they not want the public to know that the FHC has those
records, or did the FHC make them eliminate that part?  They only give
some book as a resource.

That time that I tried to navigate the AER online, I got as far
as getting a password and I pulled up any old record, and it was
amazing!  The actual photo of the document from the 1500s appeared on
the screen and it had all kinds of info, but the destination was also
"Nuevo Espana" (like in the one below) not any particular state in
Mexico because there probably weren't any states yet. When I tried to
find my particular surnames, I had no luck in navigating to that point
(too mensa).  Only Ancestry.com gets me to my surnames, but alas, they
don't have the actual scans of the AER documents.

not sure, i don't think so.

yes joining that list is so user unfriendly. . .you'll just have to
fiddle with the instructions until you get it. sorry but it is hard to
finally get subscribed.

in fact if I had to subscribe today I'd have to read the instructions
myself. . .I don't remember how I did it.

Sorry about that Deena. I hate it when people throw acronyms at me
and now you have caught me doing just that.

AER is Archivos Españoles en Red

Anyone can sign up for an account and they are in the process of
digitizing (scanning) all of their collection and for those documents
that have already been digitized, you can simply pull them up and
view them online through the AER website:

http://aer.mcu.es/sgae/index_aer.jsp

I think the Sombrerete Padron that Joseph mentions is the following.
If so it is not yet digitized, but you can probably order a hard copy.

I am very interested in knowing more about the "unfilmed" records of
Sombrerete. You say the information should be available shortly via AER. I
am not familiar with this term.

As far as all of the other documents that you mention, those are all in
custody of the Spanish Ministry of Culture in Spain, thus Samuel
Sanchez's team that is presently in Zacatecas would not really be able
to film those very easily. Those should become available digitally any
time now via AER. If not, you can order copies of the documents or
films from them. I have done so already and they are very efficient,

if expensive.

Joseph:

Though Colotlan is in the State of Jalisco for governmental purposes,
its parrish is part of the Diocese of Zacatecas and geographically it
is basically part of Zacatecas as there is no way in or out of the town
without going through Zacatecas.

Leticia,

Colotlan, Fresnillo, Sombrerete, Zacatecas, Tlaltenango: Unfilmed genealogical documents and genealogical books

Elvira I don't personally know how to answer your question. Arturo
Ramos said before that in Colotlan, Jalisco there are Franciscan
records that are unavailble on microfilm and difficult to access in
person, but you were asking about Zacatecas. All that I"m saying below
might be very different than what you are talking about. If so please
shelf this diversion and we can talk about it after others reply with
those specific unfilmed records are discussed. I just can't remember
who started and where the location was.

On my wish list---below is a list of records available at different
archives but not available through the LDS on microfilm (at least
according to Dr. Lyman Platt):

Fresnillo Padron 1770 AAG

Fresnillo Padron 1772-1773 AGI Guadalajara 348

Sombrerete Padron 1777 AGI Indiferentes 1526

Tlaltenango:

and though the LDS Lib has this one
face="Arial Unicode MS,Arial,sans-serif" size="2"> Padrones 1754-1780
FHL INTL Film
1219415

According to Dr. Platt the 1772-1777 is available at: AGI
Guadalajara 348 (not sure if the above film includes this one but I
would think it doesn't since Dr. Platt didn't reference that film
number)

AND especially since 160 years of the records are missing
from Zacatecas, Zacatecas between 1679-1839 I'd love to have:

Zacatecas Padron 1770  AAG

Zacatecas Padron 1772 AGI Guadalajara 348

Zacatecas Padron 1794 AAG

oh and how can I forget, but going back to Jalisco:

Colotlan Padron 1760 AGI Guadalajara 401

Colotlan Padron 1770 BPT 45

AAG = Archivo del Arzobispado de Guadalajara, Mexico

AGI = Archivo General de Indias, Seville, Spain

BPT = Biblioteca Publica de Toledo, Spain Usually referring to
Coleccion Borbon-Lorenzana Manuscript 45

I just got off the phone with Mr. Sanchez and yes, they do have a
filiming team down in Zacatecas now and are simply trying to get the
exact information re: the location and condition of the records that
they might film.

Let us cross our fingers and see if we can make this a reality. It
would be a big boon to our efforts.

If anybody else knows of records other than Colotlan and Jerez in the
region of Zacatecas that are not filmed, please contact Mr. Sanchez and
give him the details ASAP.

Mi número es +1-202-460-4589 (móvil) o +1-202-429-1515 (oficina). No

Unfilmed genealogical documents and genealogical books

To Everyone who mentioned the unfilmed records in Zacatecas in our areas of
interest:

Now is the time for action. Please! Can anyone give me specifics? Book
numbers pages, loose pages, etc.

I sent an e-mail to Benicio Samuel Sanchez Garcia regarding what was
said. He is interested and would like specifics. When he asks he usually
does something about it. He is in a position to do. The email below is
what I had sent him. I guess no one contacted him from this group. Please
send me (or him if you prefer, mentioning this e-mail) of the documents or
books that need to be filmed, loose pages, where they are, who is in charge
at the locale, phone numbers or address if you have it, and contact person.
Please send me as much information as you have on hand about the unfilmed
documents or books.

I believe he was expecting me to send the information needed. I sent him
pat o the info as a heads up but not all the e-mails from the group
discussing the need to film some more documents.

Can you all do this ASAP? I would like to take advantage of this since
I believe Mr. Sanchez is in a position to help us and has expressed an
interest. He mentions the book found in Santiago, Nuevo Leon. I am assuming
that that his outfit is gettiing ready to microfil again. Let's take
advantage of that; who knows, we might find some more family!

The following is the e-mail I received from him today. Below it is my
original e-mail to him.

Question about Researching in a Parish

Jonathan, I spent 3 days in Ciudad Guzman/Zapotlan El Grande but
didn't know at the time that my ancestors had lived there so didn't
look at it through those eyes. There are 2 church's in the square.
A very large one and to the side a small one. If your searching for
specific records double check which of the two church's have them.
The people were very friendly and there are a great variety of
hotels and motels with a very old one right in the plaza area. It's
a hub for everything in that part of Jalisco. My destination was
Tamazula and Zapotiltic but the accomodations there were terrible so
we returned each night to our motel in Ciudad Gusman, I believe the
rooms ran about $40. American for a room for 3 people and were very
nice. Lot's of good place's to eat and even a natural yogurt and
health food store that was wonderul.
Good luck on your trip, Linda in Everett

I wrote directly to you.  But I failed to mention about the cemetery records.  Some have offices at the entrance.  Also be careful in the cemetery.  You can get assaulted.  Be careful!

Are you going to Sonora?  I was trying to remember where your wife's people were from...cannot remember.

Also received your cd's and the pic....now you see why I do not like to take pictures!!!   Thank you very much for the CD's.

Question about Researching in a Parish

Jonathan,

I have only gone to two places in Mexico, to Nochistlan Zac and Tlachichila Zac but did not have any luck in getting access to the actual records. Having said that it was at the beginning of my geneaological journey and in Tlachichila I think and hope that if I come prepared with documentation showing that I am doing verifiable research, I believe I might be allowed access. My cousins still live there and are well connected in the church. Hope as they say is everlasting so I will not lose hope.

I would advise you to be well prepared to present your credentials as a researcher and possibly be willing to pay a small fee or make a small donation to the church, nothing lost in trying. Many times church offices are closed because they have limited financial resources and cannot hire a full time secretary or receptionist. You might find the name of your town on-line, check for a contact name and number and
see if you can call ahead to schedule an appointment.

What towns will you ge going to? Sometimes it is easier in the smaller towns than in the larger ones.
Good Luch Jonathan...........Alicia

So could anyone give me some pointers, on what to expect? Or the best
