I drafted an agenda for our next meeting in March 2006.  I can e-mail you that and if you think others would be interested you can post it to the group.  Overall, I think it turned out very well.  We had a good turnout and the group may grow.  I've had others express an interest in attending the next meeting.

I did neglect inviting Deborah to this meeting, but have since e-mailed her and invited her to the next meeting.  She lives here in town, so she wouldn't have to travel.  However, she is a busy lady.

That history of Monte Escobedo is what got me on Leonardo de la Torre's 
trail.  It is very interesting because many of the heirs took on the 
name Covarrubias, who were prolific among the few Spanish families that 
were in the Totatiche area in the 17th Century and it looks like a lot 
of the land that was owned by Francisco Escobedo was around Totatiche.  
I think there are references to el Rio Guajuquilla, which I have found 
out from other sources is today called the Rio Cartagenas which runs 
through Totatiche.

I had seen the above website earlier when it was still undergoing construction. A recent 
contribution to the site, http://club.telepolis.com/jerz/index_archivos/marabr/algo.htm, 
reviews the history of the researcher's family, del Hoyo y Landa. Señor del Hoyo is an 
associate of the much previously discussed genealogy researcher Leonardo de la Torre. I 
think he does a good job with the history.

For my purposes, the article is interesting because the Valparaiso haciendas discussed by 
del 
Hoyo were later owned by my Felguerez family after 1850. Of course, after the Mexican 
revolution, the great majority of these haciendas were lost and presently are only empty 
shells of what they once were. When I went to Zacatecas in April I took pictures of the 
Hacienda de San Mateo de Valparaiso that is discussed by del Hoyo; it must have been 
glorious at one point but it is sad disrepair now.

All the major haciendas turned over every three generations. There is an old Spanish 
saying about this phenomenon: "Father a merchant, son a gentleman, grandson a beggar."

I would like to give you an example of the interesting nature of surnames. The email reply 
below is from an Austrian, Christine Serro, who is applying to the Tandem Program at the 
University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, where my daughter, Megan (Maya) Serros, 
works and is in charge of new job applicants.

Christine Serro below responds to an inquiry about her surname since it obviously is so 
close to my daughter's surname of Serros.

Surnames are crazy and you should never assume anything.

Thank you for your mail! You are not bothering me at all and I definitely don't
think that you are crazy.  I find it also very interesting that your name is so
close to mine! Unfortunately, my great-grandfather grew up in an orphanage in
Venedig, Italy because his mother (or father..) has given him away when he was
a baby. In the orphanage he got the number Zero (0) and after years that
transformed into Serro. ...so, that is not very much what I know about my
family tree. Do you have any relatives in Italy or Austria?

I am not sure, since I don't know Maximo's parents.

Last time I looked at your site you had two Godina families one that 
was a Jara-Godina family that I was distantly related to through the 
Jara side.  The other was a Godina-Cardenas family that I am related 
to through the Cardenas side.  I wasn't related to either one through 
the Godina side.  Well at least not as far as I know with the 
information that I have on my family.
