Do any of you have account with Ancestry.com and can look up names?

I want to look up "Angon" in the Zacatecas or Jalisco area years 1600 - 1750's.

If you go to any LDS Family History Center you can do these searches on their computers due to the cooperative agreement between Family Search and Ancestry.com.

You will also be able to download any documents you find (you can even e-mail them to yourself).

Indeed many US local or university libraries have Ancestry.com access, however their subscriptions may not let you see some things available with a paid subscription, including information from member's trees.
You may check your local library.

You can see submitted family trees with the FHC access to Ancestry, unless, of course the submitter has made the tree private.

Hello Bob,

I too descend from Juan Miguel Lozano and Lorenza Diaz de Sandi and have the following information for 3 of their daughters:

1. Luisa m. Ignacio Bernardo Gonzalez on May 6, 1752 in Teocaltiche. The marriage record states that Luisa is 'originaria de'
el Agostadero.

2. Ana Gertrudis m. Francisco Lorenzo Perez Gallo on May 10, 1756 in Teocaltiche. The marriage record states Ana to be 'originaria de' la hacienda de Senor San Jose, which is probably the hacienda San Jose de Ajojucar. Ana is also listed with the surname Trillo.

I am very grateful for my copy. It cost me, no lie, about $14.00 dollars. It's the 1951 edition. The quality of the paper is not that great since it's post WWII paper. The paper looks almost tan. The central public Library in Los Angeles has a copy in the genealogy reference section. I had been photocopying that book until I got my copy.

If you want, shoot me an email on the particular surname that interests you and I will scan those pages that refer. The book has two major sections. The first part deals with Spanish land grants, who inhereted what, sold what to whom, some quotations from last wills and testaments (where the genealogy gems come from). The second part of the book is entitled Bioteca de Occidente Conquistadores y Conquista Fundadores y Fundaciones Pobladores y Plobazones - Incluso lo de Ameca.

P 67 of this second section for Garcia de Alba reads as follows:

GARCIA DE ALBA, CAP. JUAN - Originario de Tecolotlan hijo de Francisco Garcia de Alba y de Casilda de Ortega

I am interested in reading this book or any scanned documents from "Bioteca de Occidente Conquistadores y Conquista Fundadores".

Is there a digitized copy?

I descend from the surname Arriola (Arreola). My research on this line is stuck in Cocula, Jalisco (1771).

As a kid my maternal grandfather would tell me that his father told him that there were 4 surnames that founded the city of Union de Tula.

He mentioned his own, Arreola(Arriola) and Topete. I could not remember the rest of the surnames until 30 plus years later I searched Union De Tula on Wikipedia and read the other 2 (Lazcano and Villasenor).

Still not sure if Lazcano and Villasenor were mentioned by my grandfather.

My Grandfather was born in Santa Catarina, Jalisco, Mex. His grandfather, Camilo Arreola, travelled back and forth from Palmar de Los Pelayos and Santa Catarina.

My great grandpa x6, was married in Cocula Jalisco (1771).

Any Arriola (Arreola) info would be greatly appreciated

Hello Gil, We lived in Union for several years, in fact our neighbors were Arriolas, but have since died. You are correct in that the name Tula was a combination of Topete, Villasenor, Loscano, and Arriola. People with these names still live in Union.
Union is a great place to visit. They celebrate La Fiesta de Octubre this year from about the 11th to the 19th.

Several of us have the same Garcia de Alba line. Does the book provide any more detail to the information than what was already mentioned, such as the names or dates of the other descendants? What other families are mentioned? How many pages does the book contain?

Hi Deedra,

It seems that I do not have the ability to upload content to Nuestros Ranchos, otherwise I would have uploaded the pages where the GARCIA DE ALBA are mentioned in the book Ameca Protofundacion.

In addition to the direct quote provided in another post, the GARCIA DE ALBA are mentioned in pages 220 (two instances), p.233 and p. 261.

I will scan these pages sometime next week for you and we will find a way to get them to you so you.

I have a Juan Garcia de Alva married to a Rosa de la Cueva, and they had a daughter named Damiana Vicencia Garcia de Alva born on 23 Sep 1743 in Ejutla. Damiana married Francisco Moscoso Gonzalez-Corona on 15 Dec 1766 in Autlan. Does anyone have the parents for Juan Garcia de Alva that might connect him with the already mentioned Garcia de Alvas?

Thanks Deedra,

That was extremely helpful! My only question is why you determined that Juan and Francisco Garcia de Alva are the same person rather than brothers? If they are the same person, I am wondering why at his second marriage they did not mention his first wife? Usually they say that a person was married and give the name of the dead spouse.

Thanks again!

Comment

Sergio, I have reviewed my tree and supporting documents. I searched all of the documents I have and he is always referred to as "Francisco." I believe you must be right as I am also unable to locate a burial for Rosa as well in Ejutla and can't understand why I combined them into one person. Based on this I am making Juan a separate son from Francisco. This is why it is important to share and collaborate!
Deedra Corona

Comment

Hi Deedra,

Having re-reviewed the documents you sent me I realized that this link calls him Juan Francisco Garcia de Alva. So that may be where you got the idea that they are the same person
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18721-66057-35?cc=1874591&wc…

So, it is possible they are the same person, but the ones that call Juan and only Juan (such as his marriage to Rosa de la Cueva in 1738 only call him Juan. I think what I am going to do is try to review the baptisms in Tecolotlan and see if I can find a baptism for a Juan Garcia de Alva. I would basically start around 1704 and move forward.

Sergio Salés

Comment

Hello Sergio,
I'm sorry that I didn't see your response earlier. I think our previous conclusion that there are two Juans was correct. Here is the baptism for Juan Francisco:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18721-66057-35?cc=1874591&wc….

I couldn't find a baptism for Juan. I also checked for Matrimonial Information for the 1746 marriage of Juan Francisco but found nothing. However, I did locate the baptism for Maria, daughter of Juan and Rosa de la Cueva dated: 7 May, 1746

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18721-63607-43?cc=1874591&wc…

So I guess, unless Juan was a total cad, that is pretty definitive evidence that there were two separate sons of Manuel Garcia de Alba and Nicolasa Santa Ana: Juan and Juan Francisco!!

Thank you both for clarifying this name information - I descend from two branches of the Garcia de Alba family.

1) Francisco Garcia de Alba who was married to Casilda de Ortega also had another wife (or mistress) named Teodora de la Madriz. Together they had a daughter named Maria Josepha Garcia de Alba. She married Manuel Antonio Pérez de Alencastre:

Page 353, File 1154559 bottom left. Also lists witnesses as Antonio Garcia de Alba and Catalina Gonzalez de la Madriz (were they sisters or mother and daughter?).
Location: Corazon De Jesus,Tecolotlan,Jalisco,Mexico, July 25 1724.

From this union their grand-daughter Antonia Ubalda would marry Antonio Jose Martin Michel.
This line of Michels intersect with the Topetes who descend from Catalina de Ortega, sister of Casilda de Ortega.

2) But I also descend from Francisco Garsia de Alba and Casilda de Ortega through the above mentioned union. My great-great grandfather was Florencio Topete Garcia de Alba and through

Hello Mr. Topete, I too have been working some with the families around the area of Tecolotlan, Ayutla, Ejutla, and Union de Tula. I think you may be having the same problem that others of us have had..to many people with the same name. There are actually two persons, father and son, named Francisco Garcia de Alba. The first was married to Casilda de Ortega. Their son was married to Teodora de la Madriz. There is a document that you will find very interesting and helpful where Francisco II attempts to reestablish his marriage with Teodora.

Hello Deedra, thank you for clarifying which Francisco Garcia de Alba I should be focused on with the attached links. I had the information regarding Antonio but I wasn't ready to link Teodora to her sister since up until your email, I didn't know Teodora (Theodora) full name was Gonzales de la Madris.

As for my other family connections my direct line only links to the Corona's very early where I have Juan Michel-Ordonez married to Graciana Corona. This information was passed to me be Alfredo Pena Perez though I have no paper trail to confirm what I think is the understood Michel lineage amongst the families.

And the only Cobarrubias so far is through one of the Michel brothers marrying Juana Uribe Cobarrubias circa 1750.

Hi Gil,

Hello Marthaharo, and thank you for replying!

I descend directly from Manuel García de Alba y Ortega (born in 1678 in Ameca), the son of Francisco García de Alba and Casilda de Ortega Maldonado. Manuel married Nicolasa Santa Ana in 1704 in Tecolotlán. Their daughter, Casilda García de Alba y Santa Ana (named after her paternal grandmother, matronymic), married Juan Martín de Aguilar of Cocula. Juan Martín and Casilda had Lorenza de Aguilar y García de Alba, my fifth great-grandmother.

As Amaya Topete describes in his book, the first patriarch of the family was Francisco García de Alba who lived in Ayutla during the 16th century, and whose descendants spread all over central Jalisco. I found this out, because when searching for Francisco García de Alba in Google Books, an excerpt came up with these words and attributing as a preview of "Ameca, protofundación mexicana" by Amaya Topete.

Here's the excerpt:

"Un patriarca de la región, don Francisco García de Alba, se instaló por 1563

Books that are listed as out of print, etc may be true. When this is the case you need to hunt down private collectors or private libraries that are selling the book. Well I am glad you asked. Joan Angon (Juan Angon) I believe was the grandfather of my 7th generation great grandmother Maria De La Candelaria Angon (1655 - 1735) who was married to my 7th generation great grandfather Antonio Madera (1660 - 1709), where my 7th GG Grandparents resided at Minillas, Mezquitic, Jalisco, Mexico.

I have copies of documents from the cofradia (1632 - 1700) archive of Huejuquilla over the whole span when at first it was always referred to as:

"En La Cofradia De La Limpia Concepcion en la capilla del rancho de Joan De Angon"

Then later on it switches to "En La Cofradia De La Limpia Concepcion en la capilla del rancho de Esteban Angon"

Then the title and name of the rancho switches to Estancia del Rio Chico, which at that time in 1681 it made reference as to the "Estancia Rio Chico que pertenece a dos herederos de Esteban Angon."

One of those herederos is Juana Angon. The other supposedly should be Maria Angon as she appears twice in 1684 as a "Tenanche

It looks to me that they are more a romanticized group than a historical fact, the sources (a least in wikipedia are at best poor).

If "Chinos" then they were of African and Indigenous mix, but if we take in account their supposedly attire, they could easily have descended /influenced by Muslims (the ones called Moros because their African blood) or "Gitanos" in the Andalusia region.

Indeed "Chino" wasn't a Asian term on the colonial casts.

Also is good to clear the "cache" from your browser once in a while, some files there get old or corrupted preventing websites from loading correctly or at all.

Ruth,

Can someone help me read the name on this line of year 1649 Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico?

I was looking at entierros of Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico and on page 10 which is year 1649:

unfortunately it is cut off, but by looking at the other side, i'm not sure if these records are death records or not. i think they may actually be either birth or confirmation records due to the sheer number listing of names are parents

Comment

It does says Angon and the first visible letter seems to me an "A" thus it was probably referring to a daughter. like Katy said is a Confirmation entry; "hija de Juo. de angon i Juana M. Cat. de Gomes?/Gusman?" Godparent is not visible due to the tight binding.

Thanks Katy and RJQ for replying.

I have here a description of Juan De Angon on Pasejero de Indias to Mexico in 1606. There was a Juan De Angon who also had a son name Juan Angon:

http://oi62.tinypic.com/2wn6y34.jpg

In the PARS website the reference no. is: CONTRATACION,5295,N.10

http://www.archivesportaleurope.net/web/guest

I have traced Juan Angon. He shows up in the "Cofradias 1632 - 1700" archive of Huejuquilla El Alto. Where almost every page starts out with, "En La Cofradia De La Limpia Concepcion en la Capilla de este Rancho De Juan De Angon" Year 1633 for example. He had a son name Esteban Angon where then it refers to him as "Rancho de Esteban Angon" which later changed to "Estancia De Esteban Angon" By 1681, then it mentions that En la Estancia que le pertenece a dos herederos de Esteban Angon:

http://oi59.tinypic.com/3142gja.jpg

The Estancia changed name to "Rio Chico"

One of those herederos is suppose to be Juana Angon. The other could be my 7th

Antonio Madera (1660 - 1709) and Maria De La Candelaria Angon (1655 - 1735) had these kids in the Mezquitic, Jalisco, Mexico area:

http://oi59.tinypic.com/2qwoa3l.jpg

Joseph Madera (1684 - 1734)
Manuela Madera (1686 - 1738)
Geronimo Madera
Juan Madera
Maria Madera

The Guadalajara Diosesis? Can you tell me more about what that contains? If you find any on Antonio Madera or Maria De La Candelaria Angon Or Joseph Madera their son. Can you let me know?

If I go into that Guadalajara Diosesis and look for matrimonio of Antonio Madera (1660 - 1709) and Maria De La Candelaria Angon (1655 - 1735) in the time frame around 1680 - 1687, do you think I can find their matrimonio in there?

Comment

Here in this link on the Diocesis of Guadalajara beginning on page 144 and for the next several pages it mentions "Maria De La Candelaria Angon" of Mezquitic beinb married to Antonio Madera of Mezquitic:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18412-32905-83?cc=1874591&wc…

I believe you were the one that originally found this. I have a question about this archive of the Diocesis of Guadalajara? Is it random in terms of finding relatives from a certain town? Is it organized by geographic location to as to look up the archives of Diocesis of Guadalajara in the Valparaiso, Mezquitic, Huejuquilla region? Or is it just random?

Comment

the guadalajara dispensas found under the Mexico, Jalisco, Catholic Church Records, 1590-1979 category is organized randomly, and the Mexico, Archdiocese of Guadalajara, Miscellaneous Marriage Records collection has them organized by location usually.

also nvm about the last link, i looked some names on that tree and it seems unlikely that the antonio on that tree on my last link is your ancestor

c) ¿Tenía fondo claro y letras obscuras, o fondo obscuro y letras claras?
d) ¿Estaba escrito a mano o impreso mecánicamente?

Estaba escrito a mano y tenia mucho detalles.

Yes, I was already at the copy machine and I did not get a copy of the document. We were sitting next to each other looking at our respective films and it was already well past closing time. They turned off the printer and said we could not make any copies. Instead of rereading the document over and over again, I should have asked him to make a copy. Neither one of us thought about making a copy until it was too late and the printer was turned off. They

Many years ago there was a post regarding petronila Moctezuma that featured comments from Bill Figueroa, Jaime Alvarado and myself. I believe that the document that Bill Figueora is referring to is the document that I saw that closing day at the Westwood library. The excerpts that Bill give are exactly the way I remember reading them. I did send an email today to the gentleman that I believe was the man sitting next to me that found this document. Hopefully he will contact me soon. This is microfilm copy of original document. It is not a family group sheet.

I copied and pasted the post to refresh everyone's memory:

There is another document that I saw in the lds library in west los angeles where after 2 years after arriving in mexico ( I think Puebla) lope ruiz de esparza states that he is married to petronila moctezuma and it states that she is a descendent of Moctezuma II. If I recall correctly, it did

The gentleman that I tracked down was not the one that found the document. No luck yet there. But, .....in my notes there is a city written down on the paper. It is farther removed from everything else so I hadn't paid attention to it. The city Puebla is in a corner with nothing beside it. I wonder whether we haven't found it is because we keep looking for it in Jalisco Aguascalientes and Zacatecas. I will now include puebla and Mexico City.

The date of the document should read 1595 since he states that it has been two years since he arrived in what we now call Mexico. The document states that he had already married between when he arrived and the date of the document, two years later. I have him as marrying in 1594.

Interesting, although born in the Philipines I am sure he was Spanish though. Natives from Asia under the Spanish were christianized rarely mentioned their origins, its said that in Mexico specially in Nueva Galicia there were many Asians that were brought during the colonial times but with Spanish names there was (and still is) no way to tell were they came from. Sometimes I wonder when I see country folks with really heavy mongoloid features if they (their features) belong to the Native American blood (Default) or descended from those brought from South Asia.

One of my Dad's brothers is tall and gets confused for Chinese because of the way he looks.

Among my Dad's brothers and sisters, they all have different looks. One looks Chinese, but has green eyes. Another sister has pitch black hair that is straight, big blue eyes and a pinkish complexion. Another sister looks totally the opposite. Dark Complexion. Another Brother has dark short curly blonde hair, big blue eyes and a light complexion.

All of them were born in the ranchos in Mexico. The father that has same name as me, I was told that he had blue eyes.

There is a woman in our town who is a distant relative of mine. She was born and raised in our town in Mexico. But she looks unusual. She has a broad squarish face but she looks Asian too. And none of her parents or grandparents are Asian. Way up the ranchos of Mexico.

My father from Jerez told me that they had "chinos" in their area, but I think they were probably descendants of Filipinos brought there in ships by the Spanish traders. His grand-father was known as "el frances" because he had blue eyes, but I found no French in his lines, only espanoles, mestizos, and mulattos. We have very diverse ancestry.

Juan Villegas and Philipa Rodrigues were parents of Petrona Villegas and Bartolome Villegas. Bartolome was married to Nicolasa Rodrigues de Ortiz (b. 1705, Nochistlan). Her parents were Miguel Rodrigues and ...de la cruz and perhaps related to Juan de Aguayo and Catalina de la Cruz as they were padrinos. Bartolome and Nicolasa were parents to Juan Florencio Villegas (Ameca) who married Pascuala Flores in Colotlan in 1759. Does anyone see a connection anywhere?

I wonder what the town dance must have been like during Colonial times?

A town dance or gathering during colonial times. Meeting people from other villages, towns, haciendas, ranchos at the dance.

The colonial times were also the Casta times, thus unlike post independence Mexico, the costumes did not differ much from those in Spain, therefore to understand them a little you can always check the culture and customs of the peninsula (also influenced by other cultures like the Muslims) As for the Spanish in Mexico and their families (mix or not) many times the marriages where prearranged, and those families in any given town knew each other very well, thus most of their kids would grow up knowing each other, many were even family, we can see a lot of marriages between relatives.

The Hacienda culture that you refer to, born around the 1850's, this is after the colonial times, with Mexico finally consolidating more or less as the country we know, the social status changed from castas to money and power, the structure of the Hacienda (not the unit measure any more) was taking shape to open it for new villages and towns (their government that is), by these times average folks would be

when my Dad went to Jerez, Zac in 1936 he said when they went to town everyone gathered at the plaza. There would be music, the girls would walk in one direction and the boys would walk in the opposite direction and the Mothers, grandmothers and madrinas would sit on the benches to make sure no hanky panky went on. Dad said if you saw a girl you liked you would try to pass her a note. One girl passed my Dad a piece of candy and his grandmother saw it. She jumped up and took it from Dad. She told him that girl had gotten the candy from a witch and it had a spell on it that would make my Dad come back to Jerez and marry that girl. His grandma would not have it. Dad was 16. Couple who were courting also walked arm in arm but were watched to make sure everything was proper..

That was pretty much what we did still in the 80's, except for the notes and spells though :), I guess the customs are always attached to the towns growth, mine (hometown) didn't have any development for decades.

Welcome to Nuestros Ranchos. With the information you share in your other post, I was able to determine that we are distant cousins through the Valenzuela line. Many people in the general Tlaltenango area share ancestors, and we also descend from the Miramontes and other families.

Let me know if you have any questions, and you can always send me a message through the group!
