I know I am really late asking this - and I am just asking our of curiosity - but did anyone set up an ofrenda for Dia de los Muertos, to honor and remember those family members who had passed on.
I wanted to do so , but the death of my dear daughter last month ... well, I just couldn't quite do it. Perhaps I will get back to setting up an ofrenda next year. My son-in-law (non-hispanic) and two young grand-daughters set up a small ofrenda - the little one, 3 -1/2 yrs, wanted to put "everything" on the ofrenda, because "mommy would love it". (It was his first experience - I appreciate that he made the effort to share his wife's heritage with their children.)
However - if you did set up an ofrenda to remember loved ones and antepasados, could you share what you did - or perhaps share a photo.

And perhaps next year I will be able to get back to research.

You were right about the review of Guerrero - I certainly didn't know about
his indigenous/African background.

I will be going to a "Cultural Tour" in Monterrey within one week as a
representative of our school district in Illinois The Chicago Mexican American
Fine Arts Museum will be taking their exhibit to the Museum in Monterrey. They
will be featuring the African presence in Mexico. I am excited about
bringing back lessons and photos that will highlight the African presence in Mexico
- there is very little known about this within our Mexican history -- If I
can, I will share whatever was shared with me with this group.

as I mentioned before, my Ureña beguins with Cornelia Cipriana Ureña b: 16 sept 1803 in Rancho de los Ureña, Zacolaco de Torres, Jalisco. She has siblings and descendants for her brothers to actual dates. But the line goes back to:

So after a long grace period away from this, I decided to run a search and see what comes up and I found 2 things of promise. Problem is, they are very vague mentions in the posts that came up.

Does anyone know much of the surname Llanos Y Valdez(also spelt Llanos Y Valdes) and its connection to the surname Rivas? If there is information on the family itself in terms of a history, thats what I'd prefer to know. It was mentioned they are "old families", so, I'm guessing there is a lot behind these.

I just wanted to mention that my great-grandmother was an Ureña. Her family lived in Totatiche, Jalisco, and her branch of the Ureñas started originally in Jerez, so I'm sure there is a connection. I have many Ureñas from that general are in my database. Email me and I'll see if there is a connection.

A friend of mine at the local FHC asked for my help in translating a document. It is from a country that uses the cyrillic [sp?] alphabet, but the printed part is also in Latin, as well as what the priest hand-wrote on the form.

Could someone translate the following:

Anno domini millesimo = year of our lord ?

Parenties et conditio = parents and ?

Patrini et conditio = godparents and ?

Ex parte officiii parochialis r. gr. cath = ?

notum testatumque fit, in libris, metricalibus hujus Ecdesiae tomus ____ pag. _____reperiri sequentia = ?

Quas testimoniales manu propia subscrib e et algillo [?] Ecclasiae parochialis corroboro = ?

In the "tomus ____ pag.___" above, it means book and page, but I can't figure out the rest.
In the last phrase above, the priest usually signs off saying that he signs his hand to the testimony, etc., but I don't remember the exact words.

what does vindo mean?

When I read the old church records I am curious about for instance marriages. It shows witnesses but usually says something like: testigos de edad or mayores de edad. What does that mean? Also, they seem to show grandparents names, listed as AP or AM and I assume that stands for Abuelos Paternos or maternal? Is that right?

Answering your question.... no, I grew up in Guadalajara, but my mom was born and grew in Atotonilco El Bajo as well as my grandmother and all her family and ancestors. I visited 1000s of times the town and have lovely memories about it till now. I know the area very well, all the surroundings as Estipac, Villacorona, Cocula, Zacolaco, Sta Catarina and some others as Sayula, Las Barrancas, Acatlan, Ameca, etc. My mom and grandmother (still alive) told me many stories about these places and the way life was many years ago. I do have some stories written and it´s very interesting. About the Apodaca lines in my page, I don´t understand why they didn´t appear, I´m fixing that now. But anyway I remember y sent you the attachments with all this information and answered a previous mail. No matter what, I´ll send it again, ok? Back in Galveston after Ike, attempting to do a little genealogical research. I have been inspecting carefully the marriage record of Juan de Padilla and Petronila de Siordia (Thanks, Connie for the copy). Although as Connie mentioned, the copy is not good, I was able to digitally enhance it, and I am convinced that neither 'Davila' (suggested by Daniel) nor 'Delgadillo' (suggested by Connie) appear in the document after "Juan de Padilla". Instead, in my opinion it reads 'herro' or 'horro' -Note that at the time the letter 'h' was written more like a "S", thus in not uncommon to find transcriptions of surnames as 'Hinojosa' as 'Sinojosa'. I tried several searches for Herro (a Basque surname) in the "Catalogo de Pasajeros de Indias" en PARES, given that Juan is identified as 'Natural de Xerez' (Thus, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain). No matches. I entered 'Horro', and I found numerous records, all of them as far I could tell, linked to the racial descriptions of black (negros, de color loro) followed by the qualification of their status as freedmen (horro=slave that was set free). The complete description generally reads 'horro, libre'.

Ya tenia la informacion de Los hijos de Juan Gonzalez de Hermosillo,no mas la falta de comprender el espanol bien. Bueno una pregunta, dices que Ignacio de La Cueva y Rebollar y su esposa Tomasina Franco de Paredes comensaron la Rama de Franco de La Cueva, que son los hijos porque tengo unos ante pasados que se llamaban Juan Franco de La Cueva(nacio 1648 en Tepatitlan) casado con Maria Gutierrez de Hermosillo(nacio 1652) en 1673 en Jalostotitlan. Hay chansa que Juan es hijo de Ignacio de la Cueva ?

I came across a board on genealogy.com and other webpages from google that say these three families are somehow related but never mention exactly how. I do know that Pérez y Franco and Pérez de Paredes are related becuase the couple of Silão, Gto. in the 1600's had three sons two were given Pérez y Franco and the other Pérez de Paredes. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in this great group, but it is time for me to move in another direction. I met great people on this site, and heard great stories, tales, etc. and enjoyed people talking about finding new "primos", etc. However, my search takes me back to a much later date than most of the ones on the site. I am actually envious of the many people that go back and forth to see and visit the land of their ancestors. Wish I could do that too, but mine left generations ago to Northern Mexico and then into South Texas, that everyone lost track of the people left behind.

I have a relative born there (Juana Caro-Esquivel, b. 20 Nov 1912) for whom I have nothing else other than her parents names (F: Leonides Caro Fraire, M: Maria-Luisa Esquivel-Gonzalez). I believe they were from Las Paradas or La Parada, Zacatecas. Is there any local history you can post about Jalpa?

Alessandro/Amerila , I didn't forget about you. Actually the records I have
from Jalpa are from 1884 to 1903. There are definitely Vitelas and Macias in
Jalpa. Wish I could be of more help.

Amelia if you say your grandmotehr died in 1960, then that is fairly recent
and you probably can get that from civil records in Jalpa. If you have any
friends or relatives in Jalpa, I suggest you ask them for that great favor.

Has anyone heard of this book "Venerable libro de la Cofradía de Santiago de Burgos", it contains all the ancestors of the González de Hermosillo at least in the male line back to the 1200's. I think we should track this book down. I think there is only one in the actual Caterdral de Burgos, worth traveling to Spain even just to look at it. The family is on section 18. Hello to all , my ggrandfather Tomas Villalobos was married to my ggrandmother Carmen De Los Santos (we think this was her name ) she died in child birth with my grandmother Jacoba (1901)who married my grandfather Jose Olivar, I am looking for any help with this as I have no information on the Villalobos side of my family. Mi abuelo^7 Nepomuceno Rodriguez se caso con Marsela Alvarez alrededor de 1789 (quizas en Jalos o Teocaltiche) y tuvo por lo menos a Josef Maria Rodriguez (1790), a Jesus Maria Rodriguez (1795) y a mi abuelo^6 Jose Jesus Rodriguez, que no estoy seguro si es el mismo que Jesus Maria.
Si alguien tiene a alguno de estas personas en su base de datos avisenme, lo mas seguro es que seamos descendientes comunes.

Per my father, names such as Guadalupe, Jesus, Refugio, Trinidad
etc., often had the first name Maria or Jose inserted before to specify
the sex of the person. For example, Jose Guadalupe vs. Maria Guadalupe;
Maria de Jesus vs. Jose de Jesus; Maria del Refugio vs. Jose Refugio,
etc., Maria is often abbreviated as Ma. & Jose is often abbreviated as
J. When searching ancestors, I often like to throw in a Jose or Maria
before their name if I only have one name. For example, I had an
ancestor that I only knew as Rafael Perez. It turns out his actual name
at the time of his baptism was actually Jose-Ystanislao-de-San-Rafael
Perez. You have to try all sorts of things in your research.
You asked a question earlier about baptisms. Often the mother
did not attend the baptism of her child due to bed rest for some 40
days. The grandparents are usually mentioned in baptismal records from
early 1800's on, at least in records that I have studied in Jalisco.
They probably would only have attended if they were godparents as well.

Following the principle of documenting each generation and looking for "who's your daddy's, daddy's, daddy's, daddy's, etc.",

I've discovered and documented 18 generations and bridged it to Spain. When in doubt, I ordered the microfilm of Mexico's church records of baptismsm, marriages, and public records to verify my research.

2 sets of 11th Great Grandparents from Spain.

My 11th Great Grandparents' (Hernando de Escobedo (b. abt. 1520) and Leonor Juairez from Spain) son Hernando, Jr. (b. abt 1542) married my other 11th Great Gtandparents' (Alonso de Illescas (b. abt. 1520) and Bernadina Diaz) daughter Mari. Henando, Jr. and Mari left from Toledo, Spain and arrived at Nueva Espana (Mexico) on 24 March 1568. In abt. 1571 he discovered rich gold mines (now named Santo Domingo). In abt. 1593 he founded the city of San Luis Potosi.

Hernando, Jr. and his son Francisco, a Spanish Captain, (b. abt. 1569 in Zacatecas, Zacatecas) founded Jerez, Zacatecas and his son founded Monte Escobedo. Apparently Francisco received 1/4 of his father's property. and in today's money that was probably more than what Bill Gates is worth.
