An "S" in Spain and "Z" in Americas

I apologize if this question has been asked, I did a search and could not find a substantive answer here. It is fairly common knowledge that Spanish names in the Americas have "Z" instead of "S".

Paul, no I wasn't familiar with the book. It does seem to be a good one.

Henry, your welcome.

Emilie, familysearch will provide results for alternate spellings most of the time but every once in a while some are missed for whatever reason. Ph comes from Greek via Latin, as do Th and a version of Ch as in Christobal. I can definitely understand the difficulty in relating people's names with their Latin equivalent.

Joseph, in 1492 Antonio de Nebrija wrote that there was a difference in the pronunciation in Spanish but currently the Royal Academy of Spanish states there should be no difference in the pronunciation. http://buscon.rae.es/draeI/SrvltObtenerHtml?IDLEMA=78019&NEDIC=Si The ambiguous use of the v/b show us there was no agreed upon rule of spelling for those periods and the priests found no difference in the pronunciation.

Thank you Armando, you have helped clear up a mystery for me: my mother was from New Mexico, descended from Pueblo Indians and the first Spaniards to explore the North. She used to talk about a big b and a little v, and I would get so frustrated explaining to her that neither was big or little, that they were distinct. I wrote them both in capital letters for her, and told her that those were "big" letters, and then I wrote them both in lower case and told her those were small letters. She didn't understand. She said that was the way she was taught. Since she was English speaking, I couldn't figure out who would have taught her that until I now recall that her father had hired a teacher from Mexico to home school his and the neighbor's kids in proper Castilian. It didn't take; she always spoke the dialect of her region.

Emilie,

My parents would say in spanish to distinguish the V from the B, "V de Vaca or B
de Burro".

To this day, this is still how I distinguish one from the other.

V de vaca and b de burro, as well as b grande and v chica, is still used to
this day in Mexico to describe those letters when dictating the spelling of
a name or word. The correct way, in Mexico and Spain, is to say be for b and
uve for v.

I also call B "be grande" and V "ve chica" since they do have different sizes when writing in lowercase, or "be de burro" and "ve de vaca".
B is also called "be labial" since it is supposed to be pronounced by joinng your lips (labios) while V would be "ve labiodental", since you have to pronounce it by touching your lower lip with your upper front teeth (dientes).
Indeed V is also called "uve" since it is the V that looks like an U.
In Mexico we pretty much pronounce both as B, just as we pronounce both Z and S as S, but in Spain they pronounce the differences.

A little late, but better late than never. The real diference stands on a portuguese vs. spanish origin. But remember that our ancestors weren't too strict with spelling, so it's not uncommon to find alternative writing in names and lastnames. For example: the last name Chavez was written Chaves in Portugal, and so was Gonçales, or Gonçalves, Alvares, etc. But don't mind, in old times, people would write it in any way.

In a Nuestros Ranchos message from 2006, Corrine Ardoin made the following statement:

"Also, because spelling was done phonetically, you can determine where an
ancestor was from in Spain by how they spelled words, some of which are
regionally distinct by Spanish provinces, whether associated with the church
or nobility, etc., because of how they anunciated their words".

It seems that the use of "s" and "z" interchangeably was a regional thing, in Spain and Latin America. It was just customary to use "s" or "z", depending on where one lived.

There are three distinct subjects that are touched on. There is the subject
of pronunciation and phonetic spelling, the subject of the -ez versus -es
suffix, and also the subject of the surname Chavez. I'll start with
pronunciation. It hasn't always been the same in México or Spain. There have
been many changes over the centuries and therefore would be very hard to
distinguish which sound the writer intended at that time in that region and
which social class the person was from. In 1492 Antonio de Nebrija wrote the
first work dedicated to the Spanish language and its rules, also the first
for any Romance language, and dedicated it to Queen Isabel. What he wrote
about the z is that it's sole purpose is for the diction of words of Greek
It
seems that over time the z became used more and currently there is a
distinction of the c, s, and z used by a majority of Spain that began in the
16th century. Latin

Yes, thank you, Armando. I always have to use interchangeably the s and z in order to find records in the indexes, such as for the name Zamora/Samora. I forgot to try Cerrato for Serrato.

Also, I have had trouble locating a Felipe, and I finally found him in the 1700s in La Barca spelled as Phelipe. So I figure the "ph" came from the Latin? Also, the Catholic church in El Paso Texas (Sacred Heart) has many forms printed in and fill-in information written in in complete Latin. I find my Marias as Mariam, Eligio as Eloia, Vicente as Vincentio, Petra as Petrum, etc. Doesn't make it easy to find people in the indexes.

I too have found this problem in the Zacatecas records. It seems people there (Tepetongo) used several surnames interchangeably. Abuelos paternos means paternal grandparents, the baby's father's parents.

Both men and women in some cases used their mother's surnames interchangeably with their father's surnames for some reason. I found one way around it; I would look for the records of the siblings of the baby, and see what names were given for the paternal and maternal grandparents, then I would use the one that they used most of the time, especially if it followed the paternal line. Also check for the records for the baptisms of the baby's parents to see what names they gave for their grandparents. Does that make sense?

Emile, that does help. It has been confusing at times with the surnames changing so often. I tried searching surnames and it does help. By the way did you see my other post about the website where you can view actual church documents??? It's pretty neat.

Comentario

Yes, I have seen that website. Before Family Search started putting their microfilms online, we had to go to a Family History Center at the local Mormon church and send for the films, then when they came we had to use their microfilm viewers to view each film The film numbers appear on the index in that website. Most of us here have viewed the microfilms tediously for years, and it is great that they are now online. We can hardly wait til they get to Jalisco and Zacatecas. It seems they are putting up each state in alpha order, so Aguascalientes is already online. You have come in to Family Search website at a good time.

Hi Emilie,
They already have online a lot of records form Zacatecas and just a few from Jalisco in the Beta site. They are under "Mexico Catholic Church Records". Aguascalientes is under "Mexico Civil Registration".

Hi Ruben,
Yes, you can download the images, one at a time. There is a "Save" buttom at the top of the image. However, all are dowloaded with the same name, so you have to change the name of each one. Make sure you can open the image after changing the name. You can change the name of the file while saving it, this is one of the few advantages Beta has over the much better Pilot.
This is an example of the names I give my saved files:
"0605211 B SM Parras 1760_1764 Juana Perez.jpg"
Where 0605211 is the number of the original microfilm, B indicates Baptisms, SM is the church of Santa María, Parras is the town, 1760_1764 are the years that Beta collection covers and finally the name of the person(s) in the document.
Other examples:
0035167 BEsp AsSgo DF 1536_1546 1552_1589 Jph Treviño.jpg
0605234 M SM Parras 1785_1796 McosFlores MicPerez.jpg

By the way, Aguascalientes is both under "Mexico Catholic Church Records" and "Mexico Civil Registration". They may (or not) upload more records next

I have a number of copies of Esteban Valdes Salazar's books: Historia de Totatiche Tomo I and Tomo II.

The first volume includes a history of Totatiche including some genealogical information such as a census of the 100 Tlaxcaltec families that arrived in Colotlan in 1591 and some transcriptions of old Colotlan Franciscan Convent marriage and baptism records from the late 1600s and early 1700s related to localities around Totatiche.

I found a Ma. Trinidad Gonzalez Casillas, daughter of Jose Maria Gonzalez and Julia Casillas in the Jalpa Matrimonios 1827-1838 files, image #89, via the Mormon Church beta search records.

Ma. Trinidad was born in La Villita and married Fermin Pereira Baldovinos (Fermin Pereida Valdovinos) from Ojo de Agua on 9/19/1831.

Assuming Ma. Trinidad was approximately 20 years old when she married, she would be born about 1811. This means that you will not find Jose Maria Gonzalez and Julia Casillas in the Jalpa Matrimonio 1827-1838 files.

I'm now working on a different timeline for finding Jose Maria Gonzalez and Julia Casillas since Ruben spotted a wedding entry for their daughter Maria Trinidad in 1831 in the Jalpa 1827-1838 images. Plus, as Leticia mentioned, it's possible that I may find Jose Maria's town by looking for relatives of his that also named their children Lucas.

I've seen most of the films available for Jalpa, Zacatecas and they have included many individuals who were born, baptized, married and died in La Villita.

You can also try places like Tabasco, Tlatenango, Calvillo, Juchipila, Nochistlan. This area is known
as the valle de Huejucar mostly in and out of Calvillo, Ags. There is lots of movement and travel
in and out of this area where people got baptized, married, and died.

Linda, and everyone else,
So from what I read, it seems that any and all records from Jalpa, La Villita, etc., should've been sent on to Zacatecas. The reason I had asked in the first place is because I had been told that the parish in La Villita had been active and presumably was baptizing and marrying folks during the late 1800s/early 1900s. Yet there are no films for the parish. I assume that means that either no records were sent or that they weren't filmed.

As I've searched in Tabasco, I've not found more than a 1 or 2 references to La Villita. And I haven't found any references for some of the online images for Teul, Mezquital del Oro, Calvillo, that I've looked through. But I'll keep looking. As for Nochistlan, I'll take a look there for possible relatives. But I also found another "La Villita" in Nochistlan's jurisdiction (http://mexico.pueblosamerica.com/i/la-villita-15/) that I hope wasn't confusing people with "La Villita" in Jalpa's jurisdiction (http://mexico

Hola Jorge,

area.
He notado
bastante.

Aqui te proporciono algunos registros que ojala sera util:

Hi Sylvia!

Neutla and San Juan de la Vega are towns just outside Comonfort, Gto. The closest major town
in that area are Salamanca, Celaya and Santiago de Queretaro. These towns your looking for
are just north of Celaya.

In this issue of Somos Primos they have an article named "The Descendents of Don Pedro de Almandos" where they show:
ANA-MARIA CANTU-DEL-RIO-Y-DE-LA-CERDA, b. 25 Feb 1772, Nuestra Sra de Guadalupe, Salinas Victoria, Nuevo Leon, Mexico
.. as the daughter of JOSEPH-JOAQUIN CANTU-DEL-RIO-Y-DE-LA-CERDA and MARIA-MANUELA DE ALMANDOZ, so her name would match the one you found.
http://www.somosprimos.com/sp2007/spmar07/spmar07.htm

You can use this information as a good template and try to confirm all the connections with actual documents.

I would take these long surnames found in so many genealogies with a grain of salt. Certainly in Mexico we use two surnames instead of one (the first surname of the father and the first surname of the mother, in that order), however it seems to me that was not always the case, especially in Northeastern Mexico. After reading hundreds of documents, I realized that most people in NE Mexico only used ONE surname throughout their life, unlike people

Hello Victoriano,
Good to hear from you!  Thank you for the information.  You're right; the multiple surname is both a blessing and causes confusion at the same time.   FYI:  The entry does read "Juaquin Cantu del Rio y la Zerda" and on another he's simply Joaquin Cantu.  You never know!

I find the Beta site is not very user friendly.....but hold on to your hats because I was told by a church member that they will be eventually be moving the records again to a final site. She also is having problems with records not being at the Beta site when they were at the Pilot site. Just send a feed back response with your concern. Also it helps when requesting missing records to go the the library catalog for the location in Jalisco and Zacatecas and copy and paste the catalog information with the missing towns and records. I have done this in the past and got a response with the records being added within a month...maybe I was just lucky.

I'm feeling your frustration too.

Hi Linda,
I don't think they will put them back on the PILOT website, they will put them in the BETA website instead.
You can ask them to load the images you want in the BETA site through their FEEDBACK link, mentioning they were available on PILOT. Chances are they are going to respond that they are in the process of moving images from one set of servers to another so some images are currently unavailable, and that they expect the transfer to take another few weeks so keep checking back.
Regarding the collections they upload to beta.familysearch.org I heard they do give priority to the collections people are asking for through this feedback, so it may be a good idea for everybody to ask for the collections from the Zacatecas, Jalisco and Aguascalientes towns and parishes currently missing.
Good luck!

Emilie, I went to the pilot program and at the top is says beta programs. then
it says search for ancestors, click on the Canada, U.S.A and Mexico. then scroll
down to Mexico Catholic church records "brows images" is to the right.  then the
next one says view images in this collection, brows through 12xxxxxxx images..
when you do this the states in Mexico will come up, click the one you want and
the actual records for each city will appear.. hope this helps.. by the way, I
had to hold down control because my software didn't want me to see beta...

hope this helps.

Hi,

When I was at our village of Huejuquilla, Jalisco, Mexico. I went over to the current cemetary to find my grandparents and great grandparents.

But I also walked around looking at the dates to see which are the oldest. The oldest ones in the current cemetary date back to the early 1900's.

Then I thought about my ancestors that I found in the archives dating in the 1700's and wondered where could that old cemetary be located at?

So I asked family and friends in our village and other people about whether there was another cemetary

How to bring up Search on Beta?

I found the Search page for Mexico baptisms, and I try to complete the fields, but the courser doesn't appear to allow me to do so. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Emilie,
I would try with different internet browsers (Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari). Seems to be working for me.
Otherwise search in the main page and once you get your hits, within the sidebar just choose the ones for Mexico, baptisms.
Good luck!

Thank you, Victoriano,

I finally found the word "Beta" in small blue letters, and when I clicked on that, then it opened up and I was able to complete the Search fields. I tried the one for Mexico, Baptisms and I got some hits, but they are in a long continuous string that isn't sorted by locality. I got to page 16 or so, then I got tired of looking for my person because it was bringing up everybody from all the states. I will play with it some more.

Thanks again,

Modern Name

Does anyone know the modern name for 18th century Villa/Valle de Carrizal, Nuevo Leon?  I've tried several sources and have come up empty.  Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank so much

According to these official webpages, Valle del Carrizal would be today's Cienega de Flores:

http://www.cienegadeflores.gob.mx/

HISTORIA

Cienega de Flores and didn't know they were the same place!  I'm going to have to be patient, because I don't currently see either listed

Hi Alice,
It seems that the Familysearch team did not microflm the church records for Cienega de Flores. In their Family History Library Catalog they only have the 1930 census and the 1863-1930 civil records, which are not available online yet. Don't look for them anymore in the Pilot.familysearch site since it seems they won't update that database anymore. All the updates will go to the Beta.familysearch.org website, around the beginning of each month or so.
If you are in Monterrey, Mexico, they may have microfilms for the church records at the ITESM library.

Hi Alice,
ITESM is a private university with campi or campuses all over Mexico, but the main one is in Monterrey. It is the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education. They have a collection of microfilms with records from Nuevo Leon and Coahuila (very little from Moterrey, though), including some not found in the FamylySearch collection.
I am checking in beta.familysearch the church records from Salinas Victoria, NL: Matrimonios 1755-1835
On image #2 the title says: ARCHIVO DE LA PARROQUIA DE SALINAS Y CIENEGA DE FLORES.
So it seems that the church records from Cienega de Flores are mixed with the ones from Salinas; both towns shared their records in the same book, and it is online.
Bye!
