I had run across this before with another record that I must have not 
gotten a copy of and if I remember correctly, I think your first 
theory is correct Jose.

In this record, Jose Maria Miramontes appears as the padrino later in 
the record, along with his wife.  I think that what happened was that 
perhaps the padrinos went to baptize the child without the father and 
the sacristan must have written down the wrong name on whatever he 
was recording on and then the priest corrected the record when he 
wrote it into the book?  Is this the way the process works?

In the other record, the grandfather is erroneously listed as the 
father (in parenthesis) and then appears as the maternal 
grandfather.  I think that once the priest started writing out the 
whole record, he must have run across the conflicting information and 
corrected it, but left in the paranthetical name to match the 
original information that was taken at the actual ceremony...

The baptismal record is from 1907 in Totatiche, Jalisco.

Welcome Sally,

I wanted to mention that I have a Villalobos line from Lagos and 
several Diaz lines (one from Jalostotitlan).  I also have a Luna line 
from Tepechitlan, Zac.  When you have some time please take a look at 
my genealogy reports and see if we have any matches.

I will venture my opinion regarding this matter.  I haven't found any similar record but this is my opinion.

I believe both names refer to the same person, Jose Maria Miramontes and Telesforo Gutierrez.  But the scribe, unwilling to act against his conscience and being in any way untruthful, he decided to write the person's baptismal given name and the person's self-declared, newly (for whatever reasons) adopted name.  Besides, the church's sacramental books were privy objects, or so they thought at that time, so who would question?.

Hello Emilie,

I don't know if I can be much help with the Olague surname but I will 
give you what information I have. I have two Olague lines that I found 
just this year. One is when I found my ancestors Pedro Chavez Banuelos 
married to Aguada Olague in 1681 whos parents are Miguel Olague and 
Juana De La Torre Del Rio. The other line is Sebastiana Olague married 
to Francisco Davila Caldera in 1713 no parents for her because she was 
married before to a Nicolas Dena. But I did find a despensa in the 
Sagrada Mitra book that says Sebastiana was the hija natural of Jorge 
Olague doesn't give her mothers name.
