Don Fernando Arquelles was from Asturias. There were a number of Asturians in the general area of Huejuquilla el Alto/Valparais/Mesquitic in the late 1790 time frame. Don Domingo Antonio Felgueres came from Villaviciosa, Asturias in 1790 and served as lieutenant governor of Mesquitic (Mezquitic); he died in 1798 from unknown causes. Domingo's brother, Josef, was a Franciscan friar who came about the same time and you will find him periodically in different records. There were at least two other Asturians, Don Antonio Lopez del Llano, Domingo's best friend, and Don Alonzo Lopez del Campo, a cousin of Don Antonio.

FWIW, in the 1700's the Asturians (and other españoles) came to Mexico looking to marry wealthy criollo daughters (I can give you references/sources if you are interested). The wealthy criollo fathers would prefer a Peninsular son-in-law to a Mexican-born son-in-law even if the Peninsular was not particularly wealthy or not of high social class. Both Domingo Antonio

Thanks Ed,

This is all interesting. So many thoughts on Don Fernando. When you mention Bolanos? That village is still a place with a rich deposit of gold and silver. But currently Majestic Silver Corp of Canada is working that place over 30,000 hectares. There were protests from the land owners.

There are pre-existing mines all over the place. I have been to one on foot/horseback. Where my grandmother owns that hill. The hill covered with crystal quart rocks.

What does it say or mean about Asturias?  I have no relation to him but just curious.

Welcome to the fascinating world of history and genealogy! We all catch it eventually. The feeling of desire, intrigue, hunger after genealogy. One door opens three and before we know it, our family tree can span several generations over centuries. Genealogy is truly and art, not a mere hobby.

The document is beautifully written. It should say, "Don Fernando de Arguelles, natural del Principado de Asturias, de veinte anos." What sparks my curiosity is he was only twenty years old and was called Don. It was very common during colonial Mexico for these "youngsters" to be imported by their wealthy uncles to administrate their businesses. He was from Asturias, Spain, de facto, he was "asturiano" by birth. There are numerous Arguelles families in the region, most seem to descend from the main house in Asturias. The ones nearby in Zacatecas were the Arguelles y Miranda who married into the Sanchez de Tagle family who possesed the Marquisate of Altamira the other one of interest are the

Comment

Oh thank you Daniel Mende de Torres y Camino!

I did not know that what you are telling me about the Arguelles family and that why he had the title, "Don" at twenty years and it clearly says from Asturias.

He was buried in our village of Huejuquilla, Jalisco, Mexico in 1797 and what caught my attention was the word, "Asturias" Now you answered it and gave a lot of interesting information now. I am going to hold on to this document and pursue this one and try to answer your questions. This is very interesting and I try to save the ones that I run across that looks odd or interesting.

But right now I am looking for the defunto record of my great great great great grandfather Francisco Madera of Rancho De Los Maderas, where he had a son name Juan Benancio (Venancio) Madera in 1762 at Rancho De Los Maderas, because once I find it I may get the name of his parents which is another generation to backtrack.

This is really good what your telling me and I will pursue this one on Don

Hello, I just saw your message while searching for Ursua's on Nuestros Ranchos. I hope you see this message since you posted yours back in 2007. I have Ursua ancestors, and my research is leading me to Aguascalientes, and I do see your ancestors Luiz Joseph Ursua Chabes in my search. This is what I got. My first Ursua I found was Lugardo Ursua, born and married in Zacoalco de Torres, Jalisco, married to Juana Maria Nieves Garcia. His parents were Tomas de Ursua and Juana Maria Casiana Sanches, who came to the Zacoalco area between 1785 and 1788. They originally married in Aguascalientes on 14 nov 1773. Tomas' parents were Faustino de Ursua and Maria Peres. I have not been able to find Faustino's baptism, however, I was able to locate his death certificate and in there, it mentions that his parents were Juan Ursua and Cayetana Chavez and this family was from San Bartolome. Do you think my Faustino was brother to your Luis Joseph?

Hello

I too am reserching my Ursua ancestry and have the following information on this family:

Faustino de Ursua married Maria Perez (daughter of Juan Perez and Juliana Limon) on April 25, 1742 in Aguascalientes.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11592-123449-77?cc=1502404…

The marriage record has the following:
25 abril 1742: En la villa de Aguascalientes…asistí al matrimonio que en mi presencia y por palabras de presente celebraron Faustino de Ursúa, español, originario y vecino de esta jurisdicción en San Bartolomé, hijo legitimo de Juan de Ursúa y de Cayetana de Chávez con María Pérez, española, originaria y vecina de esta feligresía, hija legitima de Juan Pérez y de Juliana Limón…fueron sus padrinos Antonio Pérez y Bárbara de Ursúa

Antonio Perez is the bride's brother and Barbara de Ursua is the groom's sister.

Faustino's parents Juan de Ursua and Cayetana de Chavez married June 5, 1714 in Aguascalientes.

Found defunto of the sister of my great great grandfather Patricio Madera (1762 Rancho Ximulco):

Her name is "Dona Francisca Madera, "Espanola" was 23 years old and resided at Rancho Ximulco (Jimulco). She passed away from Fever.

She is the daughter of "Juan Benancio Madera (1762 Rancho De Los Maderas) and Maria Geronima Fernandez.

So Juan Benancio (Venancio) Madera "Espanol", that was born in "Rancho De Los Maderas" in 1762, son of Francisco Madera and Maria De Guizar. Was also a member of the "Brothers of the Cofrades" (Hacientos De Los Cofrades) with his membership listed in the year 1802. His son "Patricio Madera" my great great grandfather was born in Rancho Ximulco (Jimulco) in 1792. Patricio seemed to have had two wifes.

First one was Tomasa Munoz. Then he had another wife name Maria Dimas De La Paz that was born

Asiento means SEAT, and just as in English, it may mean someones place or post in a group (as in Seat of Congress).
It also means to write down in orden to registrer something.
So, it may be the Registry of the Brothers of the Cofardía, or the registry of the Seats of the Brothers of the Cofardía.

Thank you Victoriano. I am really excited about that my great great great grandfather Juan Benancio (Venancio) Madera born 1762, son of Francisco Madera of Rancho De Los Maderas had a seat on the Brothers of the Cofradia.

And there is a Cofradia that exists today but is a ranch and is about 10 minutes on car (distance) to Rancho De Los Maderas (San Jose De Los Maderas) and all the other ranchos and the village of Huejuquilla. Also the Cofradia is closer to the location of the Hacienda of San Antonio which is about 5 - 10 minutes past the Cofradia.

The Cofradia is old and existed back in 1632 - 1700:

Hi Donna,

not sure how familiar you are with family search but, you’ll get a lot farther

I did find your last post on NR and it looks like there may have been a glitch of some kind because I see you posted your request on May 11th and I checked my email and your post isn't on the digest for that day or the next day. Maybe, someone can look into that. I do see George

I used to do that in the beginning and it definitely limits your chance of success. If you leave the subject header unchanged, it will be very easy to miss. Also, if you're sending a research request make sure you're sending it to the research list and not here to the general list. I took a brief look at the indexed Tepetongo church records at Family Search, and I believe I may have found some records that may be of interest, but they need further research.

I did a search for children of Francisco Acevedo and Florencia Nava. In the results, there are three children, although not one that you have named, but the time period is correct, so I looked at one of the baptismal records:

Bruno Acevedo, baptized 16 Oct 1890, San Juan Bautista, Tepetongo, the son of Francisco Acevedo and Florencia Nava. The paternal grandparents are Antonio Acevedo and Guadelupe Marquez; the maternal grandparents are Domingo Nava and Jesus Acevedo. There is a marginal note in the baptismal record that Bruno married Martina Dias on 16 Jan 1915 (the church is not stated, but in the absence of a place I would assume San Juan Bautista).

In your information you have the parents of Francisco Acevedo as "Marquez Acevedo" and

My three times 4th great grandfather, D. Teodoro Garcia de Rojas y Calvillo is a perfect example of how old men can continue to reproduce. He was born on 23 March 1803 in Aguascalientes, he married twice. First, to the woman whom I descend Dionisia Martinez Calvillo ca. 1820, they had numerous sucession, of three children I descend from: Salome, Agapita and Eugenio Garcia de Rojas. D. Teodoro would later married well into his 80s, to Martina Lopez de la Cerda on 26 Oct 1881. They only had one child Germana Garcia de Rojas born 26 May 1883, she would later marry her niece's son, due to the vast age gap between her siblings. Incredible to believe that Germana was born when he was 80! The fact he remarried at that age is also interesting.

My mother (even though she was scots-irish & not mexican) raised her children to be proud of their heritage.  I can remember as a little girl telling older neighbor kids that I was Mexican American from my father & being told I was a liar.  I got the gringo genes while my brother got the mexican ones in the looks department.  We were not raised to speak spanish but my parents supported my desire to learn although you could say that I am really only fluent enough to cause trouble.  Even as an adult, people will talk around me thinking I do not understand & they will automatically assume my husband who is Puerto Rican but does not speak spanish can talk a blue streak with them.  When this happens, he can only stand & stare before looking to me to find out what was said.  People are always amazed when this happens but I have always felt looked down on when I explain my mixed heritage to them.  I have traced my ancestry for eleven years now & am proud
of both the mexican & non-mexican

Can we entertain the idea of having a " Book Tertulia" on a specific period of time from our rancho? In 2010 it will be the centennial celebration of the Mexican Revolution, maybe we can start with a theme from that period. It's just a thought.

Podriamos tener una "tertulia" sobre un libro que se enfoque en alguna etapa de  nuestros ranchos? El 20010 sera el centenario de la Revolucion Mexicana, tal vez podriamos empezar con un tema de este periodo. Es solo una idea.

Thanks for your posting. I have not heard of Mole de Rancho but if it has
all the same ingredients, I say, "what's in a name?" My sister communicated
with the woman who had the recipe in a published cook book from
Mexico, "Recetario
del Cine Mexicano" authored by Marrie-Pierre Collie. She called it "Jalisco
Style Chicken Stew". I am looking at my mother's recipe as I write this and
the ingredients are chile anchos, whole large hen (gallina), tomatillos,
masa harina, garlics, and lard. The result is a hearty, thick, soup with
shredded hen and chile. We come Tamazula de Gordiano from the other end of
Jalisco southeast of Los Altos on the way to Colima. I have ordered a used
copy of the cookbook but I found it only in England. It appears to be out
of print. All the recipes are related to Mexican movies. The author stated
this particular movie poster had Jorge Negrete eating cuachala / Mole de

Hi Joseph,

I'm pretty discouraged. I've been a member for almost a year now, submitted my family tree info in a folder and also on the Forum blog, (2x). I need help to see if anyone has heard of any my family names in my tree, and if they know about the name Ismael being a girl's name, but to no avail. No one replies, I haven't gotten a single response from anyone since I've been a member.  I don't know why and what I'm doing wrong. Am I posting it in the wrong place or something? Can you help me?

Donna,

Don't be discouraged. Some members are able to make connections with others here in the group, some are able to be helped, and others are not able to make progress.

First, I would suggest going to FamilySearch.org and searching in the search areas and in the images. There is a lot of information available on your family. Starting with Alfredo & Amelia, I was able to go back 5 generations from them. And there is still a lot of records to look. At the 5 generation mark is where I had to call it quits for the evening.

If you want to take a look at what I have found so far goto the member file folder "Walker, Jonathan - Donna Gonzalez" there is a ahnentafel chart of your family there.

Thanks,
Jonathan Walker

Donna,

I would suggest looking the folder in the membership files of
"Jonathan Walker - Donna Gonzalez" there is about 5 generations, from
your grandparents there.

I hope that it will help.

I am related to many of the families you mentioned in your email: Gaeta, Campos, Mayorga, Marquez, Cardenas, Huerta, Valdez, Avila, etc. They are mainly from the Totatiche and Colotlan area in Jalisco.

For more infomation you can see my files: http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/13945

I have made an extensive search trying to find the baptism record of my Great Grandfather Calistro (Calixto) Madera. But I have found the baptism records of his brothers and sisters.

I had a somewhat similar situation in my research.

The sister of my g-g-grandfather was said to have been born on a particular date but there is no record of her. However, there is a baptismal record of the masculine version of her name (Anastacia, Anastacio) showing the same birth date. Within the record it shows "hijo de" and also lists the name as "Jose Anastacio." (There is no family remembrance as to her having a twin.)

My current theory is that the priest just screwed-up. Perhaps when writing down the information of the baptism at a later time he inadvertently mixed-up the genders trying to remember if a child was a boy or a girl. I saw the same situation in another record, not of my family, but within baptismal records.

There are no civil records available to double check the birth. Have you tried looking for him and her in the civil records?

That is my best guess on your question.

Good luck!

Thank you MTCarillo,

Last night I began to look in the Civil Records and as I was browsing the topics on what to choose. It occurred to me that my Great Grandfather past away in December of the year 1923 as I have been to his tombstone. So I checked in Defunciones of the year 1923 and bingo! I found that document on him and it says it ws 72 years old. I misjudged the age when he past away. I thought he was in his 60's and tried looking at 1856 as my estimate. But now I know that since he was 72 years old in 1923 he should be in 1851 baptismo records which I will be searching next and hope to find it there.

Curious about this name Jose Gil Abad Monijio? on baptism in 1778 on Rancho De Los Maderas

As I was browsing the baptism records and in the year 1778, I came across this name that is odd and born in Rancho De Los Maderas in 1778:

Jose Gil Abad Monijio

I believe it is "morisco" not monijo. This was a caste in colonial Mexico given to people of mixed ancestry, usually native, black, and español. Castes became complex as to people's mixture. You'll also notice the mother has no surname, which in many instances may refer to indio, but not always.

listing someone with no surname then finding them listed with 2 or 3 different surnames later on is not unusual either but certainly complicates proving they are all the same person! It's usually in the children or grandchildren that you find the proof you need to merge then into one person.
