Jph. Alexandro Martin de Thorres is the son of Juan Martin de Thorres, "difunto" at the time of marriage. A check of records of difuntos prior to this date may turn up more information.

Dear Jose,

I used to write that I have been doing genealogy research for many years, then over twenty years, then over thirty years, now I say that my research encompasses over forty years. When I first started out, I did not have Internet or familysearch as a resource. The main resources were books and records that were on paper. As the years have gone by, The ability to access these records has become easier, first because of microfiche, then cd's, then the Internet, then the various stages of familysearch. The latest version of familysearch is supposed to be the best but I was able to access certain documents on earlier versions of familysearch that I cannot access now. But overall, the ability to research through such a powerful resource tool like familysearch makes the old fashioned work of checking out books and records seem like too much work.

Although I too make extensive use of familysearch, much of my research continues to be of the old fashioned kind. I read a lot

This person might also be the same person as Juan Joseph Nicolas de San Martin de Torres born 21 sep 1753, parents are juan antonia de torres and juana gertrudis albares. I don't know anything about this fammily just from your information I attached many records of family but there was quite a lot many duplicates but they now need merging with the family.

Your request brought up many questions. Are you looking for general information on how to use the many resources available to study genealogy? If you are, there are many books out there that can help guide you. The answer to what to do if you have "used all of what family search has" is not a short answer.

If you are looking for specific information about your ancestors, you need to provide more information and identify what clues you may have.

Surname with father no conosido

Hi,

I descend from Onofre Lomeli whose mother is Maria Nunes and father is listed as "no conosido".

How was his or other children's surname determined in these circumstances?

Thanks

Comments

Comment

In a few cases, I have discovered that persons who list parents as “no conocidos” will identify them in late-in-life marriages. One of my ancestors waited until his third marriage to spill the beans.

Comment

Thank you both for the vote of confidence. Still looking, can't find a birth certificate or baptismal record for Onofre Lomelin ( - 1759) or his mother Maria Nuñez ( - before 1755), I've also tried searching Maria Lomelin Nuñez, in the event she used a maternal surname. I am a genealogy novice and am trying to carve out a few hours a week to research. My family reunion is in a few months and I was hoping to be a little further along. I will keep the course and hopefully find Onofre's father and mother.

Comment

“No conocido ” translated literally does mean unknown, but the true meaning here is that he is “not named “ in the record. The mother, and others, most likely knew the name of the father but they were most likely not married and they did not want to put the fathers name on the record. On a few occasions I have been fortunate to discover the fathers name even though “no conocido” is in a record so don’t give up hope and keep on searching.

A few years ago I also found a record with a “Lomeli “ surname with a “no conocido” in his marriage record. By studying his mother’s ancestors, his siblings records, and the descendants of his siblings, I was able to figure out that the father’s surname was Lomeli but that the family did not want to give his first name.

You didn’t provide any information on Onofre Lomeli or his mother, María Nunes. It is important to gather as much information on them as you can to help you on your quest.

Good Luck,
Rick A Ricci

Comment

Onofre Lomeli married Angela de Jesus Ynigues on Feb 13, 1754 in Tepatitlan, Jalisco. This is where I got the "no conosido". After this, their children's records (Julio Lomeli who I descend from) are in Nochistlan, Zacatecas.

Angela's parents are Blas Ynigues and Margarita Gonzales who married on May 17, 1733 in Tepatitlan, Jalisco.

Without knowing what was the custom back then, I have been assuming that the most likely scenarios in order are
1. The father is a Lomeli and was not listed for the reasons you listed above.
2. Father is known, but not listed and the Lomeli comes the maternal side and the Lomeli family was more prominent than Nunes in the area
3. Onofre was taken in by a family named Lomeli if his mother couldn't take care of him.

I am doing what you suggested. I will just take time.

Comment

Do you descend from the “Jph. Julio Lomelin” that is married to Marcela de Los Dolores de Xauregui?

Comment

Different Julio Lomeli.
I descend from Julio Lomeli who married Maria Gertrudis Quirarte on November 7, 1781 in Nochistlan, Zacatecas.

Comment

I too descend from Julio De Lomelin who married Maria Gertrudis Quirarte, parents of Jose Andres de Lomelin who married Justa (Juana) Huerta and after she passed away he married Maria Josefa Jimenez. It appears Onofre De Lomelin is Julio De Lomelin's father and Angela de Jesus Iniguez his mother. Does anyone know if I am on the right track and does anyone know who is the father of Onofre De Lomelin? I thought it was a Domingo or Hernando De Lomelin, but I am having trouble finding information to substantiate either of them. Thank you in advance.

Yanez Family Origins

I am new to the forum and researching various family members in Mexico. My question today is around the Yanez family in Nochistlan, Zacatecas.

Hi Dolores,

Some of the first Yañez to be documented in Nochistlan are Gonzalo Yañez del Monte(married to Geronima Benavides)and Juan Yañez del Monte who was married to Maria de Medinilla. This was probably in the late 1500s or early 1600s sometime. You should try to look for a book by the name of : Genealogía de Nochistlán antiguo reino de la Nueva Galicia en el siglo XVII según sus archivos parroquiales. Its a rare book, some libraries may have a copy you can see. I know there are copies in California and Texas.

I'm not sure if you've used www.familysearch.org, but its a great resource. I looked for a Jose Maria Yanez in Nochistlan for years ranging from 1780-1830 and got a few hits, one for Jph. Maria Niebes Yanez Ximenez in 1788. I'm not sure if this is the one you are looking for, but its a place to start.

Juan Aguayo -

Some of my ancestors were named Na~nez. I think this came from Yanez or Llanez? I think mine came from Zacatecas in the 1700s or early 1800s to the Paso Del Norte area in Chihuahua. Was Nochustlan in Zacatecas back in the years you mentioned in your post? I know that states were combined and renamed back then

Thank you,

Thanks, Juan - I will check this out. I have noted various Delgadillos in my tree as well. I see similar names on both sides of Yanez (intermarrying cousins). I was just trying to figure out their origins. I had heard they could be from Portugal but from records noting Espagnola it may be Spain. I do have any other question that you might be able to answer but I will post separately.

I have two Puente lines all around the San Luis Potosí, Venado, Charcas and Pinos area--it seems they moved around quite a bit. I've often wondered the likelihood this family would have been somehow involved in mining, as it was very common in the area, for the time period. These are my lines:

1. Nicolás de la Puente m. Tomasina Pérez de Contreras y Lomelín (my 11th ggrandparents) they had the following children:

a. Nicolás Cayetano de la Puente ch. 30 Jun 1687 in Venado married Teresa Limón y López de Quezada Mendoza on 21 Sep 1716 in Jalostotitlán.

b. Agustín de la Puente ch. 29 Sep 1690 in Sierra de Pinos

2. Diego de la Puente m. Catalina López Rodríguez, as already mentioned. They had several children all in Venado, unless otherwise denoted:

a. Olaya de la Puente ch. 18 Mar 1678 m. Antonio de Medina y Laris on 20 Jun 1697 in Venado. (My 9th great grandparents)
b. Isabel de la Puente ch. 23 Jan 1683
c. Diego de la Puente ch. 18 Nov 1685
d. Antonia de la Puente ch. 2 Jul 1687 -

Comment

I have continued to create records for any puente I find in the images as I am still searching for the marriage record of my ancester gertrudes de la Puente. I have found that the starting point for many de la Puentes is Venado, San Luis Potosi and there are others scattered throughout San Luis Potosi, like Charcas, Matehuala and San Luis Potosi, San Luis Potosi. I will let you know if I find anything on your ancestors.

Comment

I have one line of Puentes that I traced from Jalisco back to San Luis Potosi (Venado and Charcas) to about the mid 1600's. The oldest couple I've found are Diego de la Puente and Catalina Lopez. The first child of this couple I found is Ysabel de la Puente, baptized 23 Jan 1683 in San Sebastian Venado, San Luis Potosi.

I see there is a baptism record on familysearch for an Elvira Moreno in Puebla, daughther of Diego Moreno Canas and Ysabel de Belasco on 24 aug 1586. But I don't think this is our Elvira, because her husband Francisco Martin died, according to the second book I mentioned, between 1581 and 1606. Hello Alice,

It means that Francisco Dias is the common ancestor of the two lines. You are lucky because some times the dispensations only go back to where the lines show that they descend from siblings. The witnesses must have been old to be able to say that they knew Francisco Dias since he is the great-grandfather in one line, and the great-great -grandfather in the other line.

Hello Alice,

You do have leads. You know more than just that his name is Francisco Diaz. His age is not just a guess but an educated calculation Let’s go over just the facts that you have given me about Francisco Diaz:

First, they knew Francisco Dias and that he is the great-grandfather in one line, and the great-great -grandfather in the other line. This means we can research all the people in the two lines and calculate a shorter time frame that would fit both lines.

Second, we know that the witnesses knew him so we can also use the ages of the witnesses used and see where the witnesses lived to see how, and when, they may have known him. If they went to the trouble of dragging in the oldest people for witnesses, then you can guess that younger people did not know him.

Third, they go to the trouble of not just mentioning the tronco as Francisco Diaz, but do not mention the mother, which leads me to the belief that there is a possibility that they don’t share the same mother. So

Hello Rick,
The trouble stems from language difficulties and not knowing the meaning of consanguindad terms. First the testigos say they are "ligados por parentesco porque su padre, Dolores
Candela y la madre de la pretense Ma Refugio Esquivel estaban en 2 con 3 grado. What does that mean? How close were they?
Then I think the mother in law (because the father is dead)"que ignorava absolutamente el parentesco que con tiene el pretense tiene contraido hasta ahorra." Does this say the mother in law was in denial of the consanguinidad or didn't know about it?
It goes on to say that the testigos deduced a genealogical tree that shows they are related en tercero con quatro grado. Where does this put the couple--1st, 2nd, cousins or closer?
Thanks so much for your advice assistance. FYI: Asientos, Informacion Matri 1840, 1843-44

My Spanish isn't fluent, but it's workable, and the more you read the more terms you pick up

First degree of consanguinity is usually a pair of siblings
Second degree is usually first cousins/primos hermanos
Third degree second cousins/primos segundos
Fourth degree third cousins/primos terceros

After that, a dispensation isn't really required.

In your case, it looks like Dolores Candela and Maria Refugio are first cousins once removed, so they're between grades? And the mother of bride had no idea the couple shared kinship.

So going by what Rick said about being great grandfather to one and great great grandfather to the other . . .

Francisco Diaz (trunk/common ancestor)
1st degree - His child . . . sibling . . . another child
2nd degree - Dolores Candela . . . 1st cousin . . . child of child above
3rd degree - Groom . . . 2nd cousin . . . Maria Refugio Esquivel
. . . . . . . . . . . . 2nd cousin once removed . . . bride

(I'm assuming it's the bride who's younger. I

Hi Andrea,
Thank you so much.

This is what I've deduced: The first number refers to the trunco couple's relationship.
The second number refers to how far removed the subsequent generations are from el trunco.

The bride Ma Luisa Esquivel (hija natural) and groom Victor Candelas, are both 25.
So, Victor's father Dolores and Ma Luisa' mother Ma Refugio are related 2 con tercero.
Three generations removed? In other words, Francisco Dias, el trunco, was of Victor's grandparents generation?

Dolores' parents are Francisco Candelas and Ma Josefa Dias.
So...Francisco Dias "el tronco" maybe Ma Josefa Dias brother or first cousin?
Since two older witnesses claimed to have known Francisco Dias, this could be 75 years ago.

I hope I've come away with new knowledge and not messed it up! I appreciate so much having
a group like ours. There are so many resources who are willing to share.
Thanks again,

Hello Rick,
Thanks to your help, I went back another generation on two trees--YEA!
Never having researched a consanguinidad situation before, I'm not sure where to go
from here. I'd like to find the bride's mother Ma Refugio Esquivel's connection to the Dias family. Is that even possible since the bride is a hija natural of Refugio Esquivel?
I found Ma Josefa Dias' parents: Jose Guillermo Dias and Paula Feliciana Trujillo and now I'll see if they had a son Francisco Dias.

Thanks again, for helping to clarify this.

Hi Alice,

Sorry about the confusion. I had mistakenly believed that Francisco Diaz was the “tronco” of both lines, but now I understand that he is Maria Josefa Diaz’s brother. The “tronco”of both lines are their parents. Here is the revised line :

Jose Guillermo Dias and Paula Feliciana Trujillo (trunk/common ancestors)
1st degree - Ma Josefa Dias. . . . siblings. . . Francisco Diaz
2nd degree-Dolores Candelas.1st cousin . child of Francisco Diaz
3rd degree - Groom . Victor Candelas. . 2nd cousin . Maria Refugio Esquivel
Bet. 3rd/4th degree. 2nd cousin once removed . bride...Ma Luisa Esquivel

Thanks,

Hi Alice,

Juan Esteban Esquivel and María Francisca Diaz are possible parents of María Refugio Esquivel If they are her parents, then María Francisca Diaz is the daughter of Francisco Diaz and the tree would look like this:

Jose Guillermo Dias and Paula Feliciana Trujillo (trunk/common ancestors)
1st degree - Ma Josefa Dias. . . . siblings. . . Francisco Diaz
2nd degree-Dolores Candelas.1st cousin . Maria Francisca Diaz
3rd degree - Groom . Victor Candelas. . 2nd cousin . Maria Refugio Esquivel
Bet. 3rd/4th degree. ..............................bride...Ma Luisa Esquivel
(2nd cousins, once removed)

This is just speculation on my part as Juan Esteban Esquivel and María Francisca Diaz have the surnames, location, family connections, and time frame that we are looking for in the parents of María Rufugio Esquivel.

Thanks,
Rick A. Ricci

Hello Rick,
Well, it's certainly worth investigating as I was looking for Esquivel/Dias connection.
Thanks again. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

San Francisco near Degollado or Ayotlan?

This time, I'm researching my wife's ancestors, and I'm trying to find the location of this town called San Francisco, I assume, in Jalisco.

Hi,

I know this is an old post but did you ever find this ranch? I have found a few documents with this ranch but I am not able to find it on any maps. I asked some of my family members that still live in Degollado, if they know of this ranch but they have not heard of it.

Thank you,
Esther

I looked for this ranch too. There are a number of places named San Francisco in the Altos Sur and Ciénega regions, but in this case I think it might be San Francisco de Rizo. It’s across the state line in Guanajuato. A hundred years ago the people there would have had to make the choice between going to the parish in Degollado or the one in la Piedad for their sacraments and I think going to Degollado would have made more sense for them.

La Piedad is on the other side of the Rio Lerma and it would have been a hassle to cross it before the construction of the modern bridges, especially en las aguas. Degollado is also closer I think than going around the river bend to the old bridge over the Lerma at Santa Ana Pacueco. In contrast, one just has to cross an arroyo (also the state line) near Charapuato to get to Degollado.

San Francisco de Rizo happens to be just beyond los Fresnos, las Adjuntas and Charapuato, and we know that residents from these ranches appear in the church records

Comment

I think you might be correct, it's pretty close to Degollado. I found this site with the general population census for the municipio de Degollado. It starts on page 179 and you will see el rancho de San Francisco on page 180. So it still existed in 1921 but like you said the name might have changed. I found a map from 1824 but can't find the ranch on there. Would be great if we could find an old map. It

The reason I am trying to find it is because I have been searching for my great great grandfathers baptism record and I have had no luck in 1845-1855 Ayotlan, Arandas or Jesus Maria so my next search is La Piedad.

I have also seen mention of a place named " rancho San Francisco" in San Ignacio de los Encinos (now Degollado).

Jose Juan Martinez Ramos was born in "Rancho de Ferrero" according to his baptism. If you look at the bottom of the next page you will find a baptism record of Jose Juan Garcia who is born in the "rancho de San Francisco."

Antonio Martinez is the son of Antonio Martinez and.Maria Ygnacia Hernandez

Maria Merced Ramos is the daughter of Jose Maria Ramos and Maria Meza

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I'm starting reasearching my wife's maternal grandmother's family, and most branches are leading me to both Ayotlan and Degollado, as well as Yurecuaro, Michoacan, which is right next to these municipalities.

Another family of interest for my research is the Bernardino family. I'm still on early stages, but they are recorded in Ayotlan and mentioned to be from Jalpa. At first, I thought it meant Jalpa, Zacatecas, but I just learned there is a place in Guanajuato called Jalpa de Canovas, which would make more sense (closer to Ayotlan and Degollado). I'll share additional info as I progress.

R.A. Ricci, the info you shared, is that part of your research, do you have this family in your family tree?

Saludos.

Translation of " Cuarto " in an Address.. Aguascalientes

Hola amigos, i have seen in records describing the home address of a Person i read as the following. ... Con domocilio en la cuarta de Guadalupe numero 288 ..

I have learned streets did not carry the numerical address from one block to the next block. That is a street whose last address was 100 did not number the next home one next block 101..
Instead the numbers of the next block began at 1.
For this reason if the street was named Juarez house No. 25. In the 2nd block. ...the address would be segundo de Juarez No. 25 ( The 2nd block of Calle Juarez No. 25.)

Buenaventura Hernandez Martinez from Degollado, Jalisco looking for baptism reg.

Hi,

Search for baptisms for Buenaventura's children. They typically name the children's grandparents in this time period. See if either grandparent used a different last name besides Hernandez and Martinez. This can help you narrow down couples for Buenaventura's parents and lead to other info and may help you narrow down your search.

Comment

Thank you, I did that already but the parents names never changed. I also looked up padrinos names that had the last name Hernandez because most of the time the padrinos were relatives but no luck.

Comment

Ok, I see familysearch gives nothing for this couple in Jalisco for the time of his birth. Also Degollado's records stop in the 1860's. So, next step I would say is narrow down Juan Hernandez's and Guadalupe Martinez's deaths and see if you can find the record. Hopefully that will give you their parents. Then search them in familysearch and see if you can narrow down a town.

civil-v-church matrimony

When a child was born, it appears that the parents had it baptized prior to registering it
with the civil government. For obvious reasons of infant mortality and salvation, I suppose.

Thank you, Esther. That's very interesting; I would have thought in Mexico, the church wedding would have come first. Was/Is that the law? That really helps to know when searching marriage info post 1810. Thanks again.

New to the Site

Hello. I am new to the site and want to introduce myself. I am researching my family lines from Zacatecas.

Greetings Elisa, and welcome. Like you, I have family lines in both Coahuila and the NR areas, specifically Aguascalientes. Let me know if you want help with the brick walls. I recently got past a few in Coahuila and Agc with some legwork and will be happy to share my research method. One good technique is to look for additional spouses, as additional info is often included in subsequent marriage documents. I had two ancestors whose relevant (to my line) marriage documents claimed no known parents. However, in later marriages, after everyone who cared was dead I suppose, those ancestors finally revealed their true parentage. Likewise, prior/first marriage records of females who were widowed are a good source of information (especially in Coahuila), as those females’ parents are not always listed in subsequent marriages. And, of course, in some jurisdictions the baptismal records will list grandparents. Good luck to you.

Hello S Medina Perez

I'm not male, but I descend from the Lomelin and Perez lines from Ocotlan.

My 6th great uncle was Jose Manuel Lomelin b. Abt 1751 Ocotlan
Married to Maria Ignacia Perez Gonzales
Hijo de Juan Joseph Lomelin y Maria Antonia de la Cruz Becerra (my 6th great grandparents)
His father in law was Juan Antonio Peres de Bargas b. Abt 1738
Their son Calletano De La Cruz Lomelin Perez b. 6 May 1780

I have a lot more Lomelin and Perez from Ocotlan in my tree, maybe I can be of further assistance.

What is a rancho in Mexico?

Since my grandparents came from a "rancho", but died too early to share their experiences or descriptions in Mexico....I always deduced that a "rancho" was a parcel of land that usually had "animales"

Hola Lunalatina,

I’m not familiar with that area, but here’s a link to the Tierras y Aguas archives in Guadalajara, 1584-1866. These are titulos de mercedes de tierras, and several were granted to “los naturales” of various pueblos. The first roll are the indexes, which name the locations and the recipients. They’re sorted by “libros,” and each “libro” covers so many years; each grant is numbered. You can find the corresponding rolls, which are listed by years.
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/278176?availability=Family%…

As for the term “rancho,” from what I can tell, in earlier years, it usually meant a place for animals and husbandry, as you mentioned, and “labor” was used for cultivation, but I suppose “rancho” later became a generic term for both.

Good luck!

Their marriage record has his parents names but not his wifes. You might need to find IM to see if they are the same couple.

Hola primo,

As a matter of fact, a few years ago, I had contact with his great-grandson, Carlos Gonzalez Magallon, a retired Mexican diplomat, presently living in Guadalajara. This was through the Nueva Galicia DNA project at FTDNA. We haven’t had contact since, but I’ve seen him post at one of the genealogy groups on facebook. I just checked, he’s still on facebook. He can probably tell you what you need to know.

Hi Veronica,

Welcome to the group! This is where most of us started out - you can learn a lot here, so don’t worry about asking questions. I’d recommend that if you do post a question, try to give as much information as you can about the ancestors you are seeking: approx birth year, where they lived, spouses and other family members. The more info you put out there, the more likely you’ll get a hit.

Looking at your families, you descend from families who a lot of us have in our lines, so you’re in the right place. I might be able to help you with your Delgado’s and your Lira’s.

Good luck!
