I think this is your grandfather and your great-grandmother, 
Michael.  Looks like your search will end up being in Fresnillo and 
Jerez, Zacatecas.

Was your grandfather's mother's last name Ayala?  If so this may be a 
good start for your search from the IGI database.  You can try 
looking up one of these baptismal records and see if the grandparent 
names match.  No luck on finding Rancho San Justo, but the resource

alphabetically, but I didn't look for others to see if by chance 
others might be listed.  I have it on permanent loan and have found 
it to be quite valuable as I go back into the 1800s .

Anyway, searching for my ancestors has been an exciting journey.  
Maybe I can get some help from this group.  Please see my

Groups.  I have several stories there about the lines I have been 
researching.

Emilie,

Thanks for your concern.  I do live in Mexico's east coast near the
Texas border but about 100 miles inland from the Gulf.  Although we're
not in Rita's direct path we're watching closely where it is going.  I
too have some relatives in Houston who have had to evacuate to safer
places.  Hopefully there won't be any loss of human lives this time.

I think your question on scholarly research is excellent! I would
love to see a simple directory with that type of information.
By the way, along these lines, I have an acquaintance (via Internet
only) in Jaliso who is both a genealogist and is involved in
scholarly research. He is a historian in Encarnacion de Diaz,
Jalisco, and is very knowledgeable on area history in general.
 I haven't written to him in AGES (perhaps he's not very happy
with me for not writing!) You may have already spoken with him,
but just in case, I'll forward his contact information.  

His name is Rodolfo Humberto Hernandez and he can be found at:

I would venture to say Mr. Ryskamp would comment that notarial
records are some of the most valuable yet underused resources.
I went to a workshop he presented once and he was quite convincing
about their merit. Unfortunately, I, myself, have never used
them.  But I've seen many and I know that they are a wealth of
information - the in-depth type that will paint a picture, rather
than just scratch the surface with dates.  I hope to spend some
time on these records before long.

I'm "tracking" my Gutierrez family in Jalisco and found they come from 
Chilchota Michoacan, late 1775's, where there are many Alvares del 
Castillo families who immigrate to Jalisco along with Morfin, Valencia 
and my Gutierrez. So for those of you who are looking for more Alvares 
del Castillo you might want to check out Chilchota Michoacan during 
that time period. Chilchota is very near Zamora Michoacan.
