Looking for any relatives or descendants of Manuel Puentes, from San
Juan del Mezquital, Zacatecas, who married Elodia Ortega Ramírez,
possibly born en San Miguel de (El Vergel) ?, Zacatecas.

They had the following children:

1. Ladislada Puentes-Ortega, DOB: abt. June 27, 1887, Rancho El Vergel,
Zacatecas;

2. Alejo (1) Puentes-Ortega;
3. Valeria Puentes-Ortega;
4. Victor Puentes-Ortega;
5. Antonia Puentes-Ortega;
6. Asención Puentes-Ortega;
7. Fabiana Puentes-Ortega; and
8. Ladislado Puentes-Ortega.

Ladislada ( my grandmother) said that all the Ramirez and the Herradas
from Jaralillo, Zacatecas were her cousins. Jaralillo is close to
Cañitas de Felipe Pescador and San Isidro and El Mezquite. Ladislada
married Jesus Zavala Aguilar (from El Mezquite) in El Tanque Aguilereño,
Coahuila.

Also looking for Elodia Ortega Ramirez, possibly born en San Miguel de
(El Vergel) ?, Zacatecas and any Ortegas or Ramirez from the Distritos
de Riego El Cazadero or Trujillo related to her.

if anyone happens to have this film and you are at your FHC sometime in
the next 3 months or so I'd appreciate a look up if possible:

Hi everyone, I've been looking for records at the Family History Center and
this keeps coming up.  I know there is a large city called Fresnillo, but on
the records I see, the place where my family is from during the 1860's is
called Fresnillo de Gonzalez Echeverria.  Is this the same place or is this
the name of the ranch.  On one record, a possible relative (Antonio
Gonsalez) was the parent of Pedro Gonsalez (my great grandfather) and he was
born on Rancho de los Gonsalez.  Does this sound familiar to anyone with
knowledge of the area?  I'm trying to pinpoint some locales, because I know
for sure from repeated stories that one of my great grandfathers worked at
La Hacienda Trancoso.  When I look at the Zacatecas maps, there seems to be
a couple of places that are near, like Fresnillo (the city), Trancoso (now
a
town), and Villa Gonzales (but who knows if this was the later version of
Rancho de Gonsalez).  Any of your thoughts or knowledge in these areas would
be very appreciated and enlightening.  Josie

Hello Angel, I apologize for not answering your emails right away. I 
have been really busy now that I came back from Mexico. Hey, this DNA 
Cervantes project sounds interesting. Tell me more about it. How much 
does it cost to be part of the project? I believe the expenses are 
probably worth it if we are going to know more about our ancestors.

That's right. During my research of documents of the beginning of the 
19th century I have seen individuals catalogued as "Indios" with no 
last names. Also, it is true what you say about taking the surname of 
a patron, but I have also seen individuals with surnames taken from 
towns in Jalisco, as well as occupations: San Juan, Sayula, Cocula, 
Albanil, etc.

look due north of Guadalajara and you'll find this same Mezquital del
Oro and right next to Mayahua you see another Mez_____ something town.

Dear Dora,

Thank you for sharing your family history. My grandmother was Felipa
Gonzalez, and her parents names were Antonia Friere and Isidro Pedro
Gonzalez. Antonia and Isidro were from Zacatecas but I don't know which
town. Felipa was born there in 1888, and had several brothers and sisters.
They all moved to Durango because there were terrible threats and fights
over land rights in the 1880's-1890's. My grandfather Luis had to leave
when he was a young boy with his family due to the threats since my great
grandfather was labelled a revolutionary. Both Luis and his brother Gen.
Juan Pablo Gonzalez were in the Mexican Revolution and knew Pancho Villa.
My dad tells me that his uncle Juan Pablo was ambushed in the early 1900s
with the governor of Chihuahua, a second cousin named Abraham Gonzalez. I
am trying to verify all of this as it is oral history in my family, given to
me by my dad who recently passed away at age 90. He loved history and knew
of many people and families in Durango and relatives from Zacatecas.
Apparently, his grandfather was Leon Gonzalez who worked on La Hacienda
Trancoso and met my great-grandmother Julia Hernandez there. She was the
daughter of an administrator there, and she and her father had come over
from Spain in the early 1850's. I am researching my great grandparents Leon
and Julia, as I have all their kids names and the data on my father's side
since 1868, however, this is where I'm stuck.

I looked on the map for Zacatecas, and see in panel 6 and 11 a reference to
El Mesquite, and Mesquital. I could not locate them so they must be small.
It seems that people who were born and baptized in the area had their
records sent to Fresnillo de Garcia Echeverria, which have been microfilmed
by the Mormons. Do you have their web site? Que dios de bendiga. Josie

Dear Marge,

The only person I could check with is my mother and uncle. My
great-grandfather was Leon Gonsalez, who married Julia Hernandez at around
that time, but I don't have an archive on this yet. I plan to see my uncle
who lives in Phoenix next month, he's 87 years old and he may know the name
of his great, great grandfather who would have been born sometime around
1835-1850 in or near Jerez. I will get back to you as I get further into

My great-grandfather was a Zenobio/Cenobio Gonzalez born c. 1844 in Jerez
to Prudencio Gonzalez and Severiana Salcedo. His first wife, whom he
married in 1862, was Eleuteria Tovar, d/o Mauricio Tobar and Petra
Escobedo-Sandobal. His second wife, whom I descend from, was Ma. Francisca
Saldivar. Severiana Salcedo had a kinsman--I want to say a brother--named
Gregorio Salcedo. Does any of the Gonzalez information sound familiar to

have requested the baptismal certificate of my grandfather, Luis Gonsalez,
born in 1868, with record submitted to the catholic parish of La
Purificacion in Fresnillo. My father told me that his grandmother, Julia
Hernandez was 6 years old and came with her father from Spain to be one of
the hacienda administrators---it looks like they had several administrators
as the hacienda was large and prosperous. Two of her sisters were born in
Jerez, and they married wealthy men. The story goes that because she
married a ranchero, she was looked down on by her sisters. My dad told me
his sister went to Zacatecas and found distant relatives in Jerez, but since
she passed away I cannot verify it with her. The family name also has the
name Garcia, which were cousins of my grandfather Luis, also from Zacatecas.
I am looking for records of Hernandez and those of Leon Gonsalez, my
great grandfather who would have been born sometime between 1830-1850 in
Zacatecas. This is all I know about him. My grandmother was from
Zacatecas, born in 1888. Her last name was also Gonzalez, but my
understanding is that her grandparents were rescued and brought back to the
hacienda and given their family name. Does this make sense? So, my dad was
Jose Luis Gonsalez Gonzalez, born in Durango in 1914.
