When surnames were finally given to the Indios, many of them received names such as Juan de Dios or Maria de los Angeles--saints names were used as surnames. Sometimes they also took on the surname of the patron of the particular rancho, pueblito, hacienda, casa, etc., that they were living at. Marge Vallazza:)

I would like to invite viewers of the Ranchos forum with the Cervantes surname from Mexico to join the Cervantes DNA Surname Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=L97208&special=True The Cervantes surname in Mexico has its roots as far back as the early 16th Century. You have two important individuals with this surname. The first one is Leonel de Cervantes, he came with Hernan Cortes in the conquest of Mexico in 1521. Leonel de Cervantes was born in Burguillos del Cerro, Spain and was a member of a noble family. He was also a Commander of the Santiago Order of Knights. Leonel de Cervantes escorted Moctezuma out to address his people who were in revolt against the Conquistadors. Moctezuma was then stoned by his subjects. He died later of these wounds. Just after the conquest Cortes allowed Leonel to return home to Spain upon which Cervantes promised he would return to Mexico with his five daughters and marry them to Conquistadors. He kept his promise. He settled in Mexico City and also had a son and another daughter born in New Spain (Mexico). His wife was the former Leonor de Andrada. He died on September 20, 1561. He was buried in the Monastery of San Francisco, Mexico City. A descendant was governor of Oaxaca in 1981. The second person with the Cervantes surname is Juan Cervantes Casaus El Factor, he came to Mexico City in 1530 from Sevilla, Andalusia, Spain. He was sent by Carlos V King of Spain to help reorganize the Spanish colony in New Spain (Mexico). What is interesting about Juan Cervantes Casaus El Factor is that he married one of the daughters of Leonel de Cervantes and Leonor de Andrada in the middle 1530?s. His wife was the former Luisa Andrada y Lara. He acknowledged a distant family relationship to Leonel de Cervantes. Juan Cervantes Casaus El Factor had 12 children with Luisa Andrada y Lara, many of which were male with this surname. Most modern day Mexican historians such as Jose Ignacio Davila Garibe and Jesus Amaya claim that 70% of people with the surname Cervantes are descendant from either or both these two individuals. Nevertheless, there is the problem of how many other trunks there are for this surname. I read with great interest the 5 de Mayo article regarding Maximilian and the French forces - all of which is true of course. However, it is my understanding that 5 de Mayo was first celebrated by the Americans, because of another French-related war that was waged against Mexico, after the French had been "kicked out". This war is called (if I remember correctly) "La Guerra de los Panaderos". A succint recollection of this incident is as follows: Apparently, Mexican nationals had vandalized bakeries still owned by the French in Mexico City, and a big riot broke out. The French demanded reparations for the French citizens, Mexico declined. It was at this time, that the French sent in troops to once again take over Mexico, but the Mexicans defeated them on May 5th. Mexicans themselves did not see it as a victory because they landed paying restitutions anyway and lost lives during the short lived war/battle. Americans began to celebrate this occasion, because that was the last time a foreign country tried to take over a country in America, and they were defeated! This is a celebration of the Monroe doctrine, which was established to threaten any foreign powers in "re-taking" a country after they have become independent would not be tolerated or supported. Of course, that exempted the Americans themselves from invading Mexcio. Mexico themselves never celebrated this occasion until recently. Esperanza

Well, I am not Alicia, but I thought I would answer your question. If you go to http://www.expedia.com/. Select the Maps tab from the top area. Then select the 'Find a Map' link. Then Select the 'Search for a place [North America]'. Type in Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico for the place name and then click on the 'Find a Map' button. A map of Jerez [Jerez de García Salinas], Zacatecas, Mexico should come up. Using the menus you can make it bigger and zoom in or out. I have only driven through Jerez on my way to Colotlan, Jalisco so I don't know that much about it. There is two website you can check out, that have pictures and information. He was raised almost as an orphan therefore we did not know much about his family. His father died when he was young and his mother left him and his two brothers
