Hi all,
I compiled a list of all the Mexican films that are on indefinite 
hold at my local Family History Center.  I can do lookups for any of 
you as long as you can give me the date and names you are interested 
in.  At a minimum, I would need a month and year.
For Joseph:  I tried to place the file in the Ranchos 2 website, but 
I got an error message.  That's why I ended up placing it here in my 
folder.

I have a very simple request if we each do our own small part. Or a
large job if I have to do it. I just worked on helping someone in the
group. but with over 50 members I can easily forget which profiles are
which names and thereby not know how to link the genealogies (listed
under the persons name to the person subscribed under a different profile.

here is what I'd like each of you to do:

1) go to the files area

2) if your genealogy is on this page go to the far right of your name
and click on the word "edit"

3) when the window opens in the space called "Folder name" put your
email address next to your name.

4) click "save changes"

5) you're done

look at it and it should look like my folder or something similar to this:

Ranchos 2 is up and running. If you are logged on and can access the
files and links area of the original Ranchos group you should be able to
seemlessly go to the Ranchos 2 "file" area by clicking on the "Ranchos2"
link in the links area of the original Ranchos group.

If any of you can't access Ranchos2 via this link well maybe I forgot or
"couldn't" add you email address to the Ranchos2 membership list. If
this is the case email me directly (makas@...) and we'll talk
about it.

I have a suggestion and its not a big deal for now if you don't follow it.

I'd prefer any genealogies submitted in the future to be in the
genealogy report format rather than the chart format.

my reasons:

1) the charts eat up space compared to the reports

2) you can get so much more info in the reports

3) the reports can be sent in using .rtf format

Hello Alice, Joseph and others,

Thank you for your encouraging words. After rereading what I posted
Saturday, I must have been extra stressed out that day. No, civil
marriage certificates from San Francisco do not list parents - that
would have been too easy!

My father, now deceased, had passed down a rather fantastic family
story about his father's side, about two elder brothers getting
together to disinherit a much younger brother and then seeing to it
that important records were destroyed...and then in turn the youngest
brother disinherited his own son (my grandfather).

Very reluctantly, I'm now beginning to believe that this 'fantastic
family story' might be based on fact. Why reluctantly? Because to
most genealogists family stories are just that, stories, and inherently
suspect until proven to be factual. To his dying day my father didn't
believe me when I told him that the tiny, dainty little old lady (on
his maternal side) in the family photograph, the one he lovingly
remembered as his great-grandmother Trini, wasn't his
great-grandmother after all, but her sister, who married his
great-grandfather after his first wife's death! And of course this was
kept a secret because marriage between former in-laws wasn't allowed
through the Catholic church. All the documents in the world couldn't
convince my father that I was right.

What a treacherous road we genealogists tread. Ideally, we try to have
the facts fall neatly into place, all names exactly match, and
everything be verifiable. But we're dealing with real life, and life
is not neat. There should be some way of incorporating or amending an
asterisk to our lines, which would indicate to all who come later that
- wait, here is something that checks out or fits or I strongly believe
to be true, but remains to be proven with that elusive piece of paper.
Until then, sometimes all we have are our family stories.

I need some help in clarifying what appears to be variations in the 
given names Gil and Gila.  Is Gil a contraction of Mergil and/or 
Hermeregildo?  Is Gila a contraction of Hermeregilda?  I have a 
number of people found in different records whom I need to determine 
if they are the same person but recorded with a variation of name.   
Has anyone a difinitive answer?

I am so impressed with how you're going about your research.  I am 
basically following the same standard of confirming everything off 
the actual microfilm.  If I find someone on the IGI, I do add them 
to my database and reference the IGI, but will eventually go to the 
microfilm and get a print.  I didn't find a link between us, but it 
could be we will find one later as we get further back.  I only wish 
I had started my research when I was your age or that I had more 
free time to visit my local FHC. By the way, I live in Elk Grove, CA 
(a suburb of Sacramento).

All right, here's another problem, actually several questions, I'm
putting in the hands of this knowledgeable group:

Over the years we've tried to find my paternal grandfather's baptismal
record, going through many films of Bautismos in El Sagrario. I know
now where and when he was born, as eventually his civil birth record
was found under just his mother's name. His name was Leon CALVILLO
Ponce, natural son of Jose Guillermo CALVILLO Ursua and Maria Placida
PONCE Medina. (His parents, my great-grandparents, were eventually
married through the Church, in 1875.)

But here's my question: He should have been baptized sometime in April
1869. Although we couldn't find him in any of the relevant books, we
did come across a mystifying reference to a 'libro secreto #2' wherein
(I assume) were written the entries of natural or illegitimate
children [Film #299489, Bautismos del Sagrario 1868-1870]. If I were
to find this libro secreto #2, maybe it would list my grandfather's
baptism.

Has anyone else come across a reference to this libro secreto #2, or
does anyone know how to find out more about it? We asked the personnel
at the LDS Library, but they didn't have a clue as to what it meant.
Later on my grandfather went through the Seminary in Guadalajara, and
studied there intending to enter the priesthood; and I would think that
one of the primary papers you would need to enter the Seminary is a
baptismal record. He would also have needed it for his church marriage
several years later. This record has to be somewhere! We even sent a
family member to the diocese of Guadalajara to ask, but no luck.

We did find his sister's baptismal record in La Asuncion [El
Sagrario] in 1871. Although she and my grandfather were both hijos
naturales, she was erroneously listed as una hija legítima of my
great-grandparents; perhaps that's why she was in the baptismal records
and he wasn't.

Thanks to members of this group who sent me notes about Autlan de la
grana. Finally we know what happened to it - nothing! The name was
changed, that's all. It's been there all along, in fact, since the 7th
century.

My gr-grandparents' notebook is from about 1870 to 1884. I vaguely
remember my abuelita mentioning the Cristero wars.

For sgapodaca: The only APODACA surnames I have in my database are

1) Don Andres APODACA, c. 1780.

He was padrino, with Maria Antonia GARSIA, to her granddaughter, Maria
Marsela, hija legitima de Juan Jose SERRANO y Maria Simona RADILLO
Garsia in Feb. 1822, in Autlan. Maria Antonia GARSIA was the first
wife of Joseph RADILLO-GUSMAN. (Joseph RADILLO-GUSMAN I believe was my
gr3 grandfather, with his second wife, but I can't prove it yet.)

Don Andres APODACA was also padrino, with the same Maria Simona
RADILLO, above, to Jose Valerio, hijo legitimo de Jose Maria GARSIA y
Felipa QUIÑONES in Feb 1823.

2) Julia APODACA, c. 1840, with Miguel CAYEROS, were padrinos to the
marriage of my gr-grandparents Jose Merced ZARAGOZA Radillo y Rosario
CASTILLO Serrano, April 1874, in Autlan.

3) Maria Guadalupe APODACA, c. 1805, wife of Agustín ARELLANOS. They
were parents of Cesarea ARELLANOS Apodaca, 1834-1884, widow of Rafael
CASTILLO. Cesarea died in Sayula.

Yes, I remember sharing info with you before. But I still haven't been
able to sort out all the GARSIAS from the GARSIA-DE ALBAs, the
RADILLO-GARSIA and the GARSIA-GUSMANs. We'll have to do some more
comparing.
